  • Rene80 superalloy was liquid phase diffusion bonded by using boron(B) as an insert material, where B has high diffusivity and higher melting point as an insert material. Bonding procedure and bonding mechanism of Rene80/B/Rene80 joint were investigated. As results, liquid metal was produced by solid state reaction between base metal and insert material on bonding zone. The liquid metal was produced preferentially at the grain boundary. Except for production of liquid metal, other bonding procedure was nearly same as TLP(Transient Liquid Phase) bonding. Bonding time, however, was reduced compared to prior result of TLP bonding. By bonding S.4ks at l453K, Ren80/B/Rene80 joint was isothermally solidified and homogenized where thickness of insert material was 7.5.mu.m.

  • Rene80 superalloy was liquid phase diffusion bonded by using pure boron (B) as an insert material. As a basic study for the possibility of practical application of this bonding method, hardness and high temperature tensile strength of the bonded joint and metallurgical analysis were investigated. As experimental results, hardness of the bonded joint was homogenized after bonding and the tensile strength at 1144K was obtained to 90% of that of base metal. But there were some problems to be improved also, that means the joint was hardened after bonding due to increase of B content and elongation was much lower than that of base metal. Flat area and (Mo, Cr, W) boride, which should be harmful for bonding strength, were observed on the fractured surface of the tensile tested specimen.

  • Precipitation hardening nickel base alloys strengthened by intermetallic compounds are extensively used to manufacture on the components of the hot section of gas turbine engines. To ensure structural stability and maintenance of strength properties for a long time, nickel alloys are normally subjected to complex alloying with elements to form ${\gamma}'$(gamma prime). Such alloys have a limited weldability, are normally welded in high temperature. However, laser welding have a merit that applies in room temperature as easy control of welding parameter and heat input. In this study, $CO_2$ laser welding is applied on STS304 plate with good ductility and precipitation hardening nickel base alloy (GTD111DS) used blade material. Also, several welding parameters are applied on powder, power and travel speed. There are no cracks in Rene 80 and IN 625 powder when STS304 plate is used. But IN 625 powder has no cracks and Rene 80 have some cracks in welds with GTD111DS substrate. Adjusting of welding parameter is tried to apply Rene 80 having a good strength compare to IN 625. In the result of adjusted welding parameter, optimized welding parameters are set with low power, low feed rate and high welding speed. Tensile strength of GTD111DS substrate with Rene 80 powder is same and over than the one of base metal in room temp and high temp($760^{\circ}C$).

  • The effect of alloy compositions of the bond coating on the plasma sprayed-thermal barrier coatings was investigated. The performance of the coating composed of Rene80/NiCrAl/ZrO$_2$-CeO$_2$-Y$_2$O$_3$ and Rene80/CoNiCrAlY/ZrO$_2$-CeO$_2$-Y$_2$O$_3$was evaluated by isothermal and thermal cyclic test in an ambient atmosphere at 115$0^{\circ}C$. The failure of Rene80/NiCrAl/ZrO$_2$-CeO$_2$-Y$_2$O$_3$ coatings was occurred at the bond coating/ceramic coating interface while Rene80/CoNiCrAlY/ZrO$_2$-CeO$_2$-Y$_2$O$_3$ coating was failed at the substrate/bond coating interface after thermal cyclic test. The lifetime of Rene80/NiCrAl/ZrO$_2$-CeO$_2$-Y$_2$O$_3$coatings was longer than Rene80/CoNiCrAlY/ZrO$_2$-CeO$_2$-Y$_2$O$_3$coating. The oxidation rate of the NiCrAl bond coating examined by TGA was lower than CoNiCrAlY bond coatings. In summary, these results suggest that Rene80/CoNiCrAlY/ZrO$_2$-CeO$_2$-Y$_2$O$_3$system as thermal barrier coating be not suitable considering the durability of the coating layer for high temperature oxidation and thermal stress.

  • Treating bulk superalloy scrap with molten zinc has been studled to facililate recycling and recovery- of cobalt.Superalloys investigated were the cobalt-base Mar-M-509 and X45 and the nickel-base Rene 80. Charges withZnlscrap ratlos of 1.5-6.5 were heated to 750-9002 far 1-7.5 hours in a nitrogen atmosphere. The moltenzinc dissolved superalloy scrap and zinc was removed by vacuum distillation at 850-Wk for 4-6 hours. Ithas been concluded that the optimum conditions of decomposition for Mar-M-509 and Rene 80 \"ere dissolutiontemperature of about 850k, Znlscrap ratlo of about 5, and dissalution time of about 5.5 hours. The zinc-treatedsuperalloy prouducts were friable and reacted rapidly with acid solutions. Leaching 9mm pieces of unalloyedMar-M-509 or Rene 80 with 5 times the stolchlometric amount oi 6N HCI at 90t ior 3 hours dissolved about1.5-7.270, while leachmg of the minus 20-mesh products dissolved about 89.0-93.0%.ved about 89.0-93.0%.

  • By the real use of Rene 80 cast blades at high temperature ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ precipitates in the matrix(${\gamma}$) mainly due to the operating temperature. These precipitates play main role for strenthening of the blades. Generally known that dislocation density increases due to ${\gamma}-{\gamma}^{\prime}$ mismatch by the generation and growth of the precipitates, because the lattice parameter of ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ is higher than that of ${\gamma}$. These lattice parameters of ${\gamma}$ and ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ are determined through the CBED(Convergent Beam Electron Diffraction) method by STEM(Scanning Transmission Electron Microscope) in this work. And also studied, whether and how much the dislocation density increases by the generation and growth of the precipitates.

  • As it takes very long time for the Transient Liquid Phase(TLP) bonding, we tried to reduce the bonding time by changing insert material for the high diffusivity element. On this study boron powder was doped as a insert material on the bonding surface of Rene 80 superalloy, and diffusion treated at 1150.deg.C under vacuum. On this method differently from the TLP bonding the insert material was not melted during bonding but only the base metal reacted with the boron was inducedly melted. Therefore, as this bonding mechanism is different from the existing ones, it is suggested as a Melting Induced Diffusion Bonding. When this process was used for the diffusion bonding, the bonding time including homogenization decreased greatly compared to the conventional TLP bonding.

  • The morphologies of MC carbides (M stands for metal) and creep-rupture properties in directionally solidified Rene 80 having standard and Hf-modified chemistries were studied. It was found that Hf depressed the melting point, $\gamma$- $\gamma$’ eutectic temperature and $\gamma$’ solvus of nickel-base superalloy Rene 80, but did not depress MC carbide forming temperature. The morphologies of MC carbides depended upon solidification sequence, which led to blocky type in the early stage and script type in the late stage of solidification. Creep failure occurs through the crack initiation at the transverse components of longitudinal grain boundaries or interdendritic carbides in directionally solidified superalloys. It could be concluded MC carbide morphologies played an important role in creep properties of DS superalloys, that is, Hf additions increased the creep ductilities and lives of Rene 80.

  • The effects of atmosphere on the creep rupture properties of Ni-base superalloy Ren6 80 were investigated. Creep rupture tests were performed at $760^{\circ}C$, 657MPa and 982%, 157MPa under Ar gas atmospheres. Creep rupture mode and rupture properties (rupture life and elongation) were similar in two different atmospheres under the condition of $760^{\circ}C$, 657MPa. However, the results at $982^{\circ}C$, 157MPa showed different creep rupture mode and life between air and Ar gas atmospheres. In air, it was shown that creep cracks were initiated at surface-exposed grain boundaries and propagated along grain boundaries. In Ar gas atmosphere, the cracks were initiated at inner grain boundaries and coalesced to surface cracks which cause cup-and-cone type fracture. Due to protective oxide layer formation, air test showed longer rupture life than Ar test.
