  • Removal of sulfur compounds in the petroleum products is essential for the prevention of sulfur oxides. However, conventional methods involving catalytic reactions are found to have some limitations in complete removal of harmful sulfur compounds and to require relatively high cost. Recently, desulfurization process using microorganisms is known to be promising in terms of excellent sulfur removal efficiency and reasonably low treatment cost. For the biodesulfurization process to be effective, the solubilization of sulfur compounds into aqueous solution is a prerequisite. In this study, polyoxyethylene nonionic surfactants were used in order to enhance the solubilization of sulfur spectrophotometer. The solubilization of sulfur compounds was found to increase with temperature and to bo abruptly increased at above 1 wt % surfactant solutions. It was also observed that the longer the hydrophobic chain of the surfactant molecule, the higher solubilizing power of a nonionic surfactant. It was found that the Tergitol series surfactants showed higher solubilizing capacity than Neodol series presumably due to the disruption of the regular packing in the hydrocarbon region of the surfactant aggregates.

  • In Korea, large amounts of chestnut shell as by-products are produced from food industries. However, most of the by-products exist with no disposal options. Biosorption uses biomass that are either abundant or wastes from industrial operations to remove toxic metals from water. Objective of this research was to evaluate the feasibility of using chestnut shell as by-products for removal of metal ions(Pb, Cu and Cd) from aqueous solution. The chestnut shell was tested for its efficiency for metal removal by adopting batch-type adsorption experiments. The adsorption selectivity of chestnut shell for metals was Pb > Cu > Cd at solution pH 5.5. The Langmuir isotherm adequately described the adsorption of chestnut shell for each metal. Using The maximum adsorption capacity predicted using Langmuir equation was 31.25 mg $g^{-1}$ 7.87 mg $g^{-1}$ and 6.85 mg $g^{-1}$ for Pb, Cu and Cd, respectively. Surface morphology, functional group and existence of metals on chestnut shell surface was confirmed by FT-IR, SEM and EDX analysis. The chestnut shell showed an outstanding removal capability for Pb compared to various adsorbents reported in the literatures. The overall results suggested that chestnut shell might can be used for biosorption of Pb from industrial wastewater.

  • Adsorption and desorption characteristics of methyl iodide at high temperature conditions up to 25$0^{\circ}C$ by TEDA-impregnated activated carbon and silver-ion exchanged zeolite(AgX-10), which are used for radioiodine retention in nuclear facility, were experimentally evaluated. In the range of temperature from 3$0^{\circ}C$ to 25$0^{\circ}C$, the adsorption capacity of base activated carbon decreased sharply with increasing temperature but that of TEDA-impregnated activated carbon showed higher value even at high temperature ranges. Especially, the residual amount of methyl iodide after desorption on TEDA-AC represented 30% lower value than that on AgX-10. However, it can be used as an adsorbent for the removal of methyl iodide up to 15$0^{\circ}C$ if it is preventing explosion by Ignition. The breakthrough curves of methyl iodide in the fixed bed packed with AgX-10 uP to 40$0^{\circ}C$ were compared upon the effects of bed temperatures, bed depth and input concentration of methyl iodide. Removal mechanism of methyl iodide on AgX-10 was proposed, based on the analysis of by-product gas generated from adsorption reaction.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy and mechanism of the cryo-precipitation, solvent/detergent (S/D) treatment, monoclonal anti-FVIIIc antibody (mAb) column chromatography, Q-Sepharose column chromatography, and lyophilization involved in the manufacture of antithemophilic factor VII(GreenMono) from human plasma, in the removal and/or inactivation of blood-borne viruses. A variety of experimental model viruses for human pathogenic viruses, including the bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV), bovine herpes virus (BHV), murine encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV), and porcine parvovirus (PPV), were all selected for this study. BHV and EMCV were effectively partitioned from a factor VII during the cryo-precipitation with a log reduction factor of 2.83 and 3.24, respectively. S/D treatment using the organic solvent, tri(n-butyl) phosphate (TNBP), and the detergent, Triton X-100, was a robust and effective step in inactivating enveloped viruses. The titers of BHV and BVDV were reduced from the initial titer of 8.85 and $7.89{log_10} {TCID_50}$, respectively, reaching undetectable levels within 1 min of the S/D treatment. The mAb chromatography was the most effective step for removing nonenveloped viruses, EMCV and PPV, with the log reduction factors of 4.86 and 3.72, respectively. Q-Sepharose chromatography showed a significant efficacy for partitioning BHV, BVDV, EMCV, and PPV with the log reduction the log reduction factors of 2.32, 2.49, 2.60, and 1.33 respectively. Lyophilization was an effective step in inactivating g nonenveloped viruses rather than enveloped viruses, where the log reduction factors of BHV, BVDV, DMCV, and PPV were 1.41, 1.79, 4.76, and 2.05, respectively. The cumulative log reduction factors of BHV, BVDV, EMCV, and PPV were ${\geqq}$11.12, ${\geqq}$7.88, 15.46, and 7.10, respectively. These results indicate that the production process for GreenMono has a sufficient virus-reducing capacity to achieve a high margin of the virus safety.

  • ${SO_4}^{2-}$ ions present in industrial waste water if combined with other metal ions in the water can cause serious scale problem in a transporting pipe. In this study therefore ${SO_4}^{2-}$ ions in an acidic solution have been removed by using surface active glasses. Glasses with various compositions of $SiO_2-Na_2O-B_2O_3-RO$ (R=Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba) system were reacted in a ${SO_4}^{2-}$ ion-containing solution with various pHs ranging from 1 to 4 for various time the reacted glass surfaces were analyzed by XRD and SEM and all ions in the reacted solution were also measured ${SO_4}^{2-}$ ions in the solution were combined with divalent ions leached out of glass and precipitated on the glass surface as sulfate crystals. In this was the surface ion could be removed from the acidic solution. The sulfate ion removal capacity is closely related to the solubility product con-stants of the newly formed sulfate crystals. Almost no sulfate crystal was formed on the MgO-containing glass while sulfate crystals were easily formed on the glass containing either SrO or BaO This indicates that those glasses have strong removal efficiency of ${SO_4}^{2-}$ ions from the solution.

  • Mesoporous silicate materials have been used as adsorbents for the removal of heavy metals from water by introducing functional groups such as thiol and amine. In this research, it was investigated whether surfactants used as templating agents in synthetic processes can act as adsorption sites for heavy metals. Three mesoporous silicates-SBA-15, MCM-41, and HMS were synthesized using, respectively, block copolymer, hexadecyltrimethylammoniumbromide (HDTMA), and dodecyamine as surfactants. X-ray diffraction and $N_2$ gas adsorption analysis confirmed that the mesoporous silicates were well prepared and FT-IR spectra resulted in the existence of the surfactants in as-synthesized mesoporous silicates and the removal of surfactants after calcination. The interactions between $Pb^{2+}$ ions and the mesoporous silicate materials with/without surfactants were observed. In adsorption kinetic experiments, it revealed that the calcined mesoporous silicates and the surfactant-loaded SBA-15 almost had no adsorption capacity for $Pb^{2+}$ ions. In contrast, the surfactant-loaded MCM-41 and HMS showed, respectively, the adsorption capacities of 26.60 and 115.16 mg/g which were acquired through the fits of adsorption kinetic data to the pseudo second order kinetic model. The adsorption capacities were comparable to those of other mesoporous adsorbents for heavy metals.

  • The removal of orthophosphate ions from aqueous solutions by the anion exchange resin in the form of $Cl^-$ ion was investigated to elucidate the ion exchange mechanism which depends on the forms of orhthophoshate ions. In addition, the effects of alkalinity and other common anions were studied. The results showed that the orhthophosphate ions with the oxidation state of 2 and 3 ($HPO{_4}^{2-}$ and $PO{_4}^{3-}$) were effectively removed by the anion exchange resin, whereas the part of the $H_2PO_4{^-}$ ion passed through the ion exchange column. This suggested that the affinity of $H_2PO_4{^-}$ to the ion exchange resin was comparable with that of $Cl^-$ ion. In all cases, the effluent pHs have shown to be much lower than the calculated values, indicating that more $Cl^-$ ions than the orthophosphate equivalents in the influent were eluded. As the alkalinity increases, the decrease in pH was minimized. When the alkalinity was 100 mg/L ($CaCO_3$) or greater, 100 mg/L orthophosphate ions including $H_2PO_4{^-}$ were completely removed. The common anions such as $SO{_4}^{2-}$ and $NO_3{^-}$ were also removed by the anion exchange resin, and thus decreased the ion exchange capacity for the removal of orthophosphate.

  • For evaluation of adsorption characteristics of heavy metals, precipitates were collected from stream bottom in the Dalseong mine. The removal of some heavy metals such as As, Cu, and Cd from aqueous solution is studied using a precipitates taken from acid mine drainage. The yellowish brown (Munsell color 8.75YR 5/10) and dark brown (Munsell color 2.5YR 3/8) precipitates that collected from the study area consist mainly of schwertmannite and goethite, respectively. The percentage removal or adsorption capacity of metals depends on the initial concentration and characteristics of adsorbent. Removal efficiency of the adsorbents shows the order for metal ions of As > Cu > Cd. The adsorption efficiency by absorbent of precipitates in low concentration metal aqueous solution were observed 67.00-85.00% for As, 26.24-29.08% for Cd, and 7.67-12.82% for Cu. As the initial concentration of metal ions was increased from 1 to 10 mg/L, adsorption amount of adsorbent increased from 0.29 to 1.29 mg/g of Cu of schwertmannite, and from 0.24 to 1.97 mg/g of goethite.

  • Struvite (MgNH4PO4 ⋅ 6H2O) and hydroxyapatite (HAP, Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2) precipitation in urine-separating toilets (NoMix toilets) causes severe maintenance problems and also reduce the phosphate and calcium content. Application of urine separating technique and extraction of by-products from human urine is a cost effective technique in waste water treatment. In this study, we extract urine calcite from human urine by batch scale method, using urease producing microbes to trigger the precipitation and calcite formation process. Extracted urine calcite (calcining at 800℃) is a potential adsorbent for removal of heavy metal(loid)s like (Cd2+, Cu2+, Ni2+, Pb2+, Zn2+ and As3+) along with additional leaching analysis of total nitrogen (T-N), phosphate (T-P) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). The transformations of calcite during synthesis were confirm by characterization using XRD, SEM-EDAX and FT-IR techniques. In additional, the phosphate leaching potential and adsorbate (nitrate) efficiency in aqueous solution was investigated using the calcinedurine calcite. The results indicate that the calcite was effectively remove heavy metal(loid)s lead up to 96.8%. In addition, the adsorption capacity (qe) of calcite was calculated and it was found to be 203.64 Pb, 110.96 Cd, 96.02 Zn, 104.2 As, 149.54 Cu and 162.68 Ni mg/g, respectively. Hence, we suggest that the calcite obtain from the human urine will be a suitable absorbent for heavy metal(loid)s removal from aqueous solution.
