The use of satellite remote sensing in maritime safety and security can aid in the detection of illegal fishing activities and provide more efficient use of limited aircraft or patrol craft resources. In the area of vessel traffic monitoring for commercial vessels, Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) which use the ground-based radar system have some difficulties in detecting moving ships due to the limited detection range. A virtual vessel traffic control system is introduced to contribute to prevent a marine accident such as collision and stranding from happening. Existing VTS has its limit. The virtual vessel traffic control system consists of both data acquisition by satellite remote sensing and a simulation of traffic environment stress based on the satellite data, remotely sensed data. And it could be used to provide timely and detailed information about the marine safety, including the location, speed and direction of ships, and help us operate vessels safely and efficiently. If environmental stress values are simulated for the ship information derived from satellite data, proper actions can be taken to prevent accidents. Since optical sensor has a high spatial resolution, JERS satellite data are used to track ships and extract their information. We present an algorithm of automatic identification of ship size and velocity. This paper lastly introduce the field testing results of ship detection by RADARSAT SAR imagery, and propose a new approach for a Vessel Monitoring System(VMS), including VTS, and SAR combination service.
The high prices and lack of information for satellite images prevent researchers from studying remote sensing and most non-professional people can't have the simple and easy solutions for the manipulation of satellite images. 'Satellite Imagery Information Management Center'(SIMC) project which is promoted by ETRI (Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute) from 2002 to 2005 in Korea have the purpose to provide the satellite images freely to the public domain and the solutions for the above mentioned problems. Our project have the following five systems; Data Acquisition System, Data Preservation System, Integrated Solution System, Technology Development System, Operation Plan System. Data Acquisition System collects the satellite images such as LANDSAT, IKONOS, etc. Data Preservation System consists of database which registers the diverse satellite images. Integrated Solution System gives the user of public domain for the web service which search, order and transfer the satellite images. Technology Development System has the many processing technologies for the satellite images. Finally, the Operation Plan system has the role to plan the future of our SIMC project. In this paper, we will give the result of SIMC Project for each five systems during the fast four years from 2002 to 2005.

Lake studies play an important role in water management, ecology, and other environmental issues. Typically, monitoring lake levels is the first step on the lake studies. However, for the Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) of North America having millions of small lakes and potholes, on-site measurement for lake levels is almost impossible with the conventional gage stations. Therefore, we employed Geographic Information System (GIS) and remote sensing approach with the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission data to extract lake levels. Several image processing techniques were used to extract lake levels for January, 2000 as a one-time snapshot which will be useful in historic lake level reconstruction. This study is associated with other remote sensing datasets such as Landsat imagery and Digital Orthophoto Quadrangle (DOQ). In this research, firstly, image processing techniques like FFT filtering, Lee-sigma, masking with Canny Edge Detector, and contouring were tested for lake level estimation. The semi-automated contouring technique was developed to accomplish the bulk processing for large amount of lakes in this region. Also, effectiveness of each method for bulk processing was evaluated.
The objectives of this paper are to measure surface imperviousness using three different classification methods: per-pixel, sub-pixel, and object-oriented classification. They are tested on high-spatial resolution QuickBird data at 2.4 meters (four spectral bands and three principal component bands) as well as a medium-spatial resolution Landsat TM image at 30 meters. To measure impervious surfaces, we selected 30 sample sites with different land uses and residential densities across image representing the city of Phoenix, Arizona, USA. For per-pixel an unsupervised classification is first conducted to provide prior knowledge on the possible candidate spectral classes, and then a supervised classification is performed using the maximum-likelihood rule. For sub-pixel classification, a Linear Spectral Mixture Analysis (LSMA) is used to disentangle land cover information from mixed pixels. For object-oriented classification several different sets of scale parameters and expert decision rules are implemented, including a nearest neighbor classifier. The results from these three methods show that the object-oriented approach (accuracy of 91%) provides more accurate results than those achieved by per-pixel algorithm (accuracy of 67% and 83% using Landsat TM and QuickBird, respectively). It is also clear that sub-pixel algorithm gives more accurate results (accuracy of 87%) in case of intensive and dense urban areas using medium-resolution imagery.

Subsurface Internal Waves (IWs) can be detected in satellite images as periodic alternating brighter/darker stripes. It is known that there are two types of IWs - depression type and elevation type - depending on the water depth in stratified oceans. In this study, we have quantitatively verified the process of converting polarity from depression waves to elevation waves using ERS-2 SAR images acquired over the northern South China Sea. We simulated the evolution of IWs near a turning point with a numerical model for internal wave propagation. The simulation results near the turning point clearly showed us not only a conversion process of IWs from depression to elevation waves, but also a similar wave pattern with the observed SAR image. We also simulated SAR intensity variation near the turning point. The upper layer currents were computed at regular intervals using the numerical model, as the IWs were passing through the turning point. Then, an integrated hydrodynamic-electromagnetic model was used for simulating SAR intensity profiles from the upper layer currents at each position. The simulated SAR intensity profiles at each position were compared with the observed SAR intensities.
Animated anaglyph is the most cost-effective method for 3D stereo visualization of virtual or actual 3D geo-based data model. Unlike 3D anaglyph scene generation using paired epipolar images, the main data sets of this study is the multi-typed 3D feature model containing 3D shaped objects, DEM and satellite imagery. For this purpose, a prototype implementation for 3D animated anaglyph using OpenGL API is carried out, and virtual 3D feature modeling is performed to demonstrate the applicability of this anaglyph approach. Although 3D features are not real objects in this stage, these can be substituted with actual 3D feature model with full texture images along all facades. Currently, it is regarded as the special viewing effect within 3D GIS application domains, because just stereo 3D viewing is a part of lots of GIS functionalities or remote sensing image processing modules. Animated anaglyph process can be linked with real-time manipulation process of 3D feature model and its database attributes in real world problem. As well, this approach of feature-based 3D animated anaglyph scheme is a bridging technology to further image-based 3D animated anaglyph rendering system, portable mobile 3D stereo viewing system or auto-stereo viewing system without glasses for multi-viewers.
Land-use or land-cover classification of satellite images is one of the important tasks in remote sensing application and many researchers have tried to enhance classification accuracy. Previous studies have shown that the classification technique based on wavelet transform is more effective than traditional techniques based on original pixel values, especially in complicated imagery. Various basis functions such as Haar, daubechies, coiflets and symlets are mainly used in 20 image processing based on wavelet transform. Selecting adequate wavelet is very important because different results could be obtained according to the type of basis function in classification. However, it is not easy to choose the basis function which is effective to improve classification accuracy. In this study, we first computed the wavelet coefficients of satellite image using ten different basis functions, and then classified images. After evaluating classification results, we tried to ascertain which basis function is the most effective for image classification. We also tried to see if the optimum basis function is decided by energy parameter before classifying the image using all basis functions. The energy parameters of wavelet detail bands and overall accuracy are clearly correlated. The decision of optimum basis function using energy parameter in the wavelet based image classification is expected to be helpful for saving time and improving classification accuracy effectively.
By the end of December 2020, an earthquake with Mw about 6.4 hit Sisak-Moslavina County, Croatia. The town of Petrinja was the most affected region with major power outage and many buildings collapsed. The damage also affected neighbor countries such as Bosnia and Herzegovina and Slovenia. As a light of this devastating event, a deformation map due to this earthquake could be generated by using remote sensing imagery from Sentinel-1 SAR data. InSAR could be used as deformation map but still affected with noise factor that could problematize the exact deformation value for further research. Thus in this study, 17 SAR data from Sentinel-1 satellite is used in order to generate the multi-temporal interferometry utilize Stanford Method for Persistent Scatterers (StaMPS). Mean deformation map that has been compensated from error factors such as atmospheric, topographic, temporal, and baseline errors are generated. Okada model then applied to the mean deformation result to generate the modeled earthquake, resulting the deformation is mostly dominated by strike-slip with 3 meter deformation as right lateral strike-slip. The Okada sources are having 11.63 km in length, 2.45 km in width, and 5.46 km in depth with the dip angle are about 84.47° and strike angle are about 142.88° from the north direction. The results from this modeling can be used as learning material to understand the seismic activity in the latest 2020 Petrinja, Croatia Earthquake.

The coastal provinces of South China have been uniquely shaped by various tectonic events. During the midlate Mesozoic tectono-thermal event, the oblique subduction of the Paleo Kula-Pacific plate beneath the Eurasian plate has created a complicated tectonic setting for the whole region. However, the mechanism of this event is not completely understood. In this paper, we discuss the advantages of using LANDSAT TM satellite imagery over a small part of the region - the Mirs Bay Basin which is largely covered by dense vegetation and where limited outcrops is seen. The use of satellite imagery complements field mapping and the result shows a prominent sinistral offset along the eastern margin of the Mirs Bay Basin, which was not previously recognized on the ground.
