This paper discussed and analyzed results of different classification algorithms for land use classification in arid and semiarid areas using CBERS-1 image, which in case of our study is Shihezi Municipality, Xinjiang Province. Three types of classifiers are included in our experiment, including the Maximum Likelihood classifier, BP neural network classifier and Fuzzy-ARTMAP neural network classifier. The classification results showed that the classification accuracy of Fuzzy-ARTMAP was the best among three classifiers, increased by 10.69% and 6.84% than Maximum likelihood and BP neural network, respectively. Meanwhile, the result also confirmed the practicability of CBERS-1 image in land use survey.
This study utilized a spatial region growing segmentation and a classification using fuzzy membership vectors to detect the changes in the images observed at different dates. Consider two co-registered images of the same scene, and one image is supposed to have the class map of the scene at the observation time. The method performs the unsupervised segmentation and the fuzzy classification for the other image, and then detects the changes in the scene by examining the changes in the fuzzy membership vectors of the segmented regions in the classification procedure. The algorithm was evaluated with simulated images and then applied to a real scene of the Korean Peninsula using the KOMPSAT-l EOC images. In the expertments, the proposed method showed a great performance for detecting changes in land-cover.
This study investigates the potential of bidirectional long short-term memory (Bi-LSTM) for efficient modeling of temporal information in crop classification using multitemporal remote sensing images. Unlike unidirectional LSTM models that consider only either forward or backward states, Bi-LSTM could account for temporal dependency of time-series images in both forward and backward directions. This property of Bi-LSTM can be effectively applied to crop classification when it is difficult to obtain full time-series images covering the entire growth cycle of crops. The classification performance of the Bi-LSTM is compared with that of two unidirectional LSTM architectures (forward and backward) with respect to different input image combinations via a case study of crop classification in Anbadegi, Korea. When full time-series images were used as inputs for classification, the Bi-LSTM outperformed the other unidirectional LSTM architectures; however, the difference in classification accuracy from unidirectional LSTM was not substantial. On the contrary, when using multitemporal images that did not include useful information for the discrimination of crops, the Bi-LSTM could compensate for the information deficiency by including temporal information from both forward and backward states, thereby achieving the best classification accuracy, compared with the unidirectional LSTM. These case study results indicate the efficiency of the Bi-LSTM for crop classification, particularly when limited input images are available.
Classification of Earth natural components within a full polarimetric SAR image is one of the most important applications of radar polarimetry in remote sensing. In this paper, the unsupervised classification algorithms based on the combined use of the polarimetric processing technique such as the target decomposition and statistical complex Wishart classification method are evaluated and applied to vegetated terrain in Jeju volcanic island.

Traditionally, classification of remote sensed image data is one of the important works for image data analysis procedure. So, many researchers devote their endeavor to increasing accuracy of analysis, also, many classification algorithms have been proposed. In this paper, we propose new classification method for remote sensed image data that use rough set theory. Using indiscernibility relation of rough sets, we show that can classify image data very easily.

The Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have several advantages over conventional RS techniques. They can acquire high-resolution images quickly and repeatedly. And with a comparatively lower flight altitude i.e. 80~400 m, they can obtain good quality images even in cloudy weather. Therefore, they are ideal for acquiring spatial data in cases of small agricultural field with mixed crop, abundant in South Korea. This paper discuss the use of low cost UAV based remote sensing for classifying crops. The study area, Gochang is produced by several crops such as red pepper, radish, Chinese cabbage, rubus coreanus, welsh onion, bean in South Korea. This study acquired images using fixed wing UAV on September 23, 2014. An object-based technique is used for classification of crops. The results showed that scale 250, shape 0.1, color 0.9, compactness 0.5 and smoothness 0.5 were the optimum parameter values in image segmentation. As a result, the kappa coefficient was 0.82 and the overall accuracy of classification was 85.0 %. The result of the present study validate our attempts for crop classification using high resolution UAV image as well as established the possibility of using such remote sensing techniques widely to resolve the difficulty of remote sensing data acquisition in agricultural sector.
Strong backscattering features from high-resolution Synthetic Aperture Rader (SAR) image provide useful information to analyze earth surface characteristics such as man-made objects in urban areas. The SAR image has, however, some limitations on description of detail information in urban areas compared to optical images. In this paper, we propose a new classification method using a fused SAR and Electro-Optical (EO) image, which provides more informative classification result than that of a single-sensor SAR image classification. The experimental results showed that the proposed method achieved successful results in combination of the SAR image classification and EO image characteristics.
In order to classify an satellite imagery into geospatial features of interest, the supervised classification needs to be trained to distinguish these features through training sampling. However, even though an imagery is classified, different results of classification could be generated according to operator's experience and expertise in training process. Users who practically exploit an classification result to their applications need the research accomplishment for the consistent result as well as the accuracy improvement. The experiment includes the classification results for training process used VITD polygons as a prior probability and training parameter, instead of manual sampling. As results, classification accuracy using VITD polygons as prior probabilities shows the highest results in several methods. The training using unsupervised classification with VITD have produced similar classification results as manual training and/or with prior probability.
In order to utilize remote sensed images effectively, a lot of image classification methods are suggested for many years. But, the accuracy of traditional methods based on pixel-based classification is not high in general. In this study, object oriented classification based on image segmentation is used to classify Landsat images. A necessary prerequisite for object oriented image classification is successful image segmentation. Object oriented image classification, which is based on fuzzy logic, allows the integration of a broad spectrum of different object features, such as spectral values , shape and texture. Landsat images are divided into urban, agriculture, forest, grassland, wetland, barren and water in sochon-gun, Chungcheongnam-do using object oriented classification algorithms in this paper. Preliminary results will help to perform an automatic image classification in the future.
Indonesia is more prone to natural disasters due to its geological condition under the three main plates, making Indonesia experience frequent seismic activity, causing earthquakes, volcanic eruption, and tsunami. Those disasters could lead to other disasters such as landslides, floods, land subsidence, and coastal inundation. Monitoring those disasters could be essential to predict and prevent damage to the environment. We reviewed the application of remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) for detecting natural disasters in the case of Indonesia, based on 43 articles. The remote sensing and GIS method will be focused on InSAR techniques, image classification, and susceptibility mapping. InSAR method has been used to monitor natural disasters affecting the deformation of the earth's surface in Indonesia, such as earthquakes, volcanic activity, and land subsidence. Monitoring landslides in Indonesia using InSAR techniques has not been found in many studies; hence it is crucial to monitor the unstable slope that leads to a landslide. Image classification techniques have been used to monitor pre-and post-natural disasters in Indonesia, such as earthquakes, tsunami, forest fires, and volcano eruptions. It has a lack of studies about the classification of flood damage in Indonesia. However, flood mapping was found in susceptibility maps, as many studies about the landslide susceptibility map in Indonesia have been conducted. However, a land subsidence susceptibility map was the one subject to be studied more to decrease land subsidence damage, considering many reported cases found about land subsidence frequently occur in several cities in Indonesia.
