The Research about Engine Speed change Effect on HCCI Engine Combustion by Numerical Analysis (엔진회전속도의 변화가 HCCI엔진연소에 미치는 영향에 관한 수치해석 연구)

  • In HCCI Engine, combustion is affected by change of compression speed corresponding to engine speed. The purpose of this study is to investigate the mechanism of influence of engine speed on HCCI combustion characteristics by using numerical analysis. At first, the influence of engine speed was shown. And then, in order to clarify the mechanism of influence of engine speed, results of kinetics computations were analyzed to investigate the elementary reaction path for heat release at transient temperatures by using contribution matrix. In results, as engine speed increased, in-cylinder gas temperature and pressure at ignition start increased. And ignition start timing was retarded and combustion duration was lengthened on crank angle basis. On time basis, ignition start timing was advanced and combustion duration was shortened. High engine speed showed higher robustness to change of initial temperature than low engine speed. Because of its high robustness, selecting high engine speed was efficient for keeping stable operation in real engine which include variation of initial temperature by various factors. The variation of engine speed did not change the reaction path. But, as engine speed increased, the temperature that each elementary reaction would be active became high and reaction speed quicken. Rising the in-cylinder gas temperature of combustion start was caused by these gaps of temperature.

  • Equisetum hyemale Linne. (EH) (Equisetaceae) has been used for the treatment of eye and skin disease, chronic eczema, pneumoconiosis and asthma in Korea and China. Human leukemic mast cells are widely distributed in the connective tissues of mammals and other vertebrates. Phorbol 12-myristrate 13-acetate (PMA) and calcium ionophore A23187 stimulated Human leukaemic mast cell line-1 (HMC-1) can produce a variety of inflammatory mediators and several pro-inflammatory and chemotactic cytokines such as TNF-$\alpha$, IL-6 and IL-8. Since TNF-$\alpha$, IL-6 and IL-8 are major factors during the inflammatory process, we studied the effects of EH on TNF-$\alpha$, IL-6 and IL-8 release in HMC-1 stimulated with PMA and A23187. The result of this study indicate that EH inhibits TNF-$\alpha$, IL-6 and IL-8 in activated HMC-1 cells via $I{\kappa}B$/Nuclear factor-${\kappa}B$ pathway. Therefore, EH might contribute significantly to the prevention or treatment of mast-cell mediated inflammatory diseases and EH has potential use in the therapy of chronic allergic inflammation.

  • An evaluation of containment transient pressure due to the particulate debris/water/concrete interaction under severe accident conditions is presented for a pressurized water reactor with a large dry containment building. A particulate debris/water/concrete model is developed and incorporated into the MARCH computer code. Comparisons with the existing MARCH molten debris/concrete model were performed for the TMLB' and S$_2$D sequences. The results yield a much slower concrete decomposition rate and release less gases into the containment atmosphere. Contrary to the molten debris model, the particulate debris model exhibits a strong interaction with water and causes a higher containment pressure. The effect of gas influx on the debris bed heat transfer was found to be insignificant.

  • A station blackout experiment called SBO-01 was performed at the ATLAS facility. From the SBO-01 test, the station blackout scenario can be characterized into two typical phases: A first phase characterized by decay heat removal through secondary safety valves until the SG dryouts, and a second phase characterized by an energy release through a blowdown of the primary system after the SG dryouts. During the second phase, some physical phenomena of the change over a pressurizer function, i.e., the pressurizer being full before the POSRV $1^{st}$ opening and then its function being taken by the RV, and the termination of normal natural circulation flow were identified. Finally, a core heatup occurred at a low core water level, although under a significant amount of PZR inventory, whose drainage seemed to be hindered owing to the pressurizer function by the RV. The transient of SBO-01 is well reproduced in the calculation using the MARS code.

  • The passenger car drivers want in general to feel good driveability, but they sometimes feel uncomfortable by shock and jerk phenomenon when they push or release acceleration pedal with clutch engaged. In this paper, the shock and jerk characteristics are studied on the vehicles of the throttle-by-wire system. With this system, the throttle is not directly controlled by drivers but via a microprocessor. So the control logic of the throttle is very important on tip-in and tip-out driveability. Experiments were carried out on two vehicles which show different control characteristics. The torque control logics were analyzed by measuring cylinder pressures. The results show that special torque control logic is needed at tip-in/out state for good driveability.

  • The cellular toxicity and antitumor effects of bleomycin are thought to be occurred by formation of O$_2$-Fe$^{2+}$-bleomycin complexes that degrade DNA and release O$_2^-$ and $^{\cdot}$OH radicals. Hydroxyl radicals derived from hydrogen peroxide seem most likely to be involved in the various stages of carcinogenesis, and transition metals such as iron play a central role in activation of bleomycin and in formation of hydroxyl radicals. This study was performed to investigate whether treatment with ferrous sulfate increase chromosome aberration induced by bleomycin and hydrogen peroxide, and whether there is different repair mechanism for DNA damage induced by those chemicals. Treatment with 3AB, Ara C, during G$_1$ and post-treatment with caffeine, and Hu during G$_2$ increased the frequency of chromosome aberration induced by bleomycin but post-treatment with caffeine only did function that way when hydrogen peroxide was treated. When 6.6X 10$^{-7}$ M of bleomycin or 5.0X10$^{-5}$M of hydrogen peroxide were treated simultaneously with iron, the frequency of chromosome aberration was reduced, if compared with the results by bleomycin or hydrogen per oxide alone.

Structural Effects of Sulfated-Glycoproteins from Stichopus japonicus on the Nitric Oxide Secretion Ability of RAW 264.7 Cells

  • The effect of various levels of proteins, sulfates, and molecular weight ($M_w$) of a sulfated-glycoprotein ($NF_3$) from a sea cucumber, Stichopus japonicus, on nitric oxide (NO) releasing capacity from RAW 264.7 cells was investigated. The $NF_3$ derivatives had various amounts of proteins (4.8~11.2%) and sulfates (6.8~25.2%) as well as different $M_w$ ($640.3{\times}10^3{\sim}109.2{\times}10^3g/mol$). $NF_3$ was able to stimulate RAW 264.7 cells to release NO with lower protein contents, indicating that the protein moiety was not an important factor to stimulate macrophages. On the other hand, the NO inducing capacity was significantly reduced with decreased levels of sulfates and $M_w$, implying that sulfates and $M_w$ played a pivotal role in activating RAW 264.7 cells. It was not clear why sulfates and a certain range of $M_w$ were essential for stimulating macrophages. It appeared that certain levels of sulfates and $M_w$ of sulfated-glycoproteins were required to bind to the surface receptors on RAW 264.7 cells.

Heavy Metal Concentrations in Soils and Crops in the Poongwon Mine Area (풍원광산 지역의 토양 및 농작물 중금속 오염)

  • Abandoned mines release acid mine drainage and cause the contamination of soil and crops around the mine area. The objective of current study is to evaluate effect of mine on the soil and crop contamination. Soils, water, and crops were collected and analyzed, and the heavy metal data were classified into types of the soil, types of crops, and distance from the minehead. Surface soils of the mine area were highly contaminated with heavy metals, especially with zinc and lead. Tailings and cultivated paddy soils were also highly contaminated. Heavy metal concentrations upon distance from minehead decrease steadily as the distance from the minehead increase. The correlation between heavy metals was extracted from soils and the content in the rice samples showed a positive relation for arsenic and cadmium but not a meaningful relation for other metals.

  • The frequency and probability of deadlock are influential factors in the design of algorithms for deadlock. However, little work has been done in this area because it's not easy to analyze how factors such as the characteristics of process or resource, resource request and release patterns, or the number of process affect the occurrence of deadlock. This study was designed to reduce remarkably the number of state by adapting the model 'state (a,b)t' to represent the resource allocation state, as well as to include the effect of resource error rate and recovery rate in the system analysis. Various formulas about deadlock occurrence were resulted in this study such as the average time interval of deadlock, the probability that a process requesting a resource waits or deadlocks, and the probability that a request deadlocks in a cycle of length 2.

Effect of Glycine Supplement on Extracellular Secretion of Levansucrase form Pseudomonas aurantiaca S-4380 in Recombinant Escherichia coli (Glycine 첨가에 의한 Pseudomonas aurantiaca S-4380 유래 재조합 levansucrase 효소의 세포 외 분비촉진 효과)

  • The addition of glycine up to 0.5% (w/v) to Luria broth (LB) media on the secretion of levansucrase in a recombinant strain Escherichia coli JM109/pUPLK1 was observed to enhance the release of periplasmic proteins from the cell to the broth, without significantly affecting the cell growth rate and protein productivity. However, the glycine concentration at 1 % (w/v), the cell density attainable at the stationary phase fell to about 50% and the extracellular activity of levansucrase corresponded to about 80% of the total (extracellular plus intracellular) activity and increased by 2.6-fold, comparing to the cells grown in the absence of glycine. The increased pH at stationary phase accelerated the degradation of levansucrase. Maximal extracellular activity was attained when 1 % glycine was supplemented at the onset of strain growth.
