  • The IEEE802.16j standard uses non-transparent relay stations to extend coverage. There are two types of non-transparent relay modes, that is, the time-division transmit and receive (TTR) relay mode which can operate with one of two types of frame structures, a single-frame and multiframe structure, and the simultaneous transmit and receive (STR) relay mode. In this paper, we analyze the relay performance of TTR and STR relay modes in IEEE 802.16j MMR system. We also propose a fair resource allocation scheme for the downlink relay frame. Numerical results show that relay performance of the TTR with a single-frame or a multiframe structure and that of the STR relay modes are almost the same in a two-hop system. However, in a three-hop system, the TTR mode with a single-frame structure outperforms other relay modes.

  • This paper is aimed to study the standby redundant system with the relay of parallel structure, by making use of the character of standby system, which reliability is higher than parallel system's if the relay has higher reliability than a certain level. By assigning the low-priced relay to the subsystem, this method increases the relay reliability, optimizes the standby redundant system reliability without violating the restrictions, and consequently reduces the cost.

  • In this paper, we propose an iterative transceiver design in a multi-relay multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system. The design criterion is to minimize sum mean squared error (SMSE) under relay sum power constraint (RSPC) where only local channel state information (CSI)s are available at relays. Local CSI at a relay is defined as the CSI of the channel between BS and the relay in the $1^{st}$ hop link, and the CSI of the channel between the relay and all users in the $2^{nd}$ hop link. Exploiting BS transmitter structure which is concatenated with block diagonalization (BD) precoder, each relay's precoder can be determined using local CSI at the relay. The proposed scheme is based on sequential iteration of two stages; stage 1 determines BS transmitter and relay precoders jointly with SMSE duality, and stage 2 determines user receivers. We verify that the proposed scheme outperforms simple amplify-and-forward (SAF), minimum mean squared error (MMSE) relay, and an existing good scheme of [13] in terms of both SMSE and sum-rate performances.

  • Digital protective relay in power system play a prominent part. Simulators for the relay test were introduced in early 1980's. A number of open loop designs have been developed and recently, several developments of real-time simulators have been reported. But they are very high cost. And then they are difficult to apply for relay testing in small business. This paper presents the structure of low cost and performance of a new pc based tester for digital protective relay testing. The proposed tester was simulated of off-line with fault transient signals obtained from EMTP.

  • Since the decentralized structure and the blindness of a large-scale wireless network make it difficult to collect the real-time channel state or other information from random distributed relays, a fundamental question is whether it is feasible to perform the relay selection without this knowledge. In this paper, a Slotted ALOHA based Greedy Relay Selection (SAGRS) scheme is presented. The proposed scheme allows the relays satisfying the user's minimum transmission request to compete for selection by randomly accessing the channel through the slotted ALOHA protocol without the need for the information collection procedure. Moreover, a greedy selection mechanism is introduced with which a user can wait for an even better relay when a suitable one is successfully stored. The optimal access probability of a relay is determined through the utilization of the available relay region, a geographical region consisting of all the relays that satisfy the minimum transmission demand of the user. The average number of the selection slots and the failure probability of the scheme are analyzed in this paper. By simulations, the validation and the effectiveness of the SAGRS scheme are confirmed. With a balance between the selection slots and the instantaneous rate of the selected relay, the proposed scheme outperforms other random access selection schemes.

  • This paper described an off-axis head-mounted display system. It is composed of a 7-piece coaxial relay lens group and a freeform surface combiner. This configuration has a simple structure and a wide field of view (FOV). In this design, a freeform surface is chosen as the combiner, to simplify the structure and attain good image quality. We generated this freeform surface by considering both coordinates and normals of discrete data points. Moreover, we realize a coaxial structure in the relay lens group, which is compact and benefits from a loose tolerance requirement. The HMD system we finally realized has a 40° × 30° FOV and 15-mm exit pupil diameter.

  • Cooperative relays can provide spatial diversity and improve performance of wireless communications. In this paper, we study subcarrier power allocation at the relays for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based wireless systems. For cooperative relay with amplify-and-forward (AF) and decode-and-forward (DF) algorithms, we investigate the impact of power allocation to the mutual information between the source and destination. From our simulation results on word~error-rate (WER) performance, we find that the DF algorithm with power allocation provides better performance than that of AF algorithm in a single path relay network because the former is able to eliminate channel noise at each relay. For the multiple path relay network, however, the network structure is already resistant to noise and channel distortion, and AF approach is a more attractive choice due to its lower complexity.

  • We propose a new relay system which use echo cancellation in relay station. In the proposed relay system, a half of time resource is required to transmit a symbol compared to conventional relay system. We show the echo cancellation method and frame structure of the proposed system. Simulation result shows that the proposed system has twice capacity than that of the conventional system.

  • We propose how to translate relay circuits to the EMFGs(Extended Mark Flow Graphs) formally and analyze the original one by using the mark flow of it. Firstly, the concepts of the output condition, the output-on condition and the output-off condition are introduced in the relay circuits. These can be used to find the structure and the operation of respective relay outputs but the sequential operations of them cannot be obtained from these. Secondly, a relay circuit is translated to the corresponding EMFG as the all output-on conditions and all output-off conditions of it are translated to EMFGs. For the adequate translation, the condition arc and the concepts of the generation transition and the degeneration transition are introduced, and the duality for the simplification of the result. Thirdly, we analyze the operation of the original circuit by analyzing the mark flow of the resulting EMFG. We can achieve easy and fast analysis based on the EMFG's operation algorithm. Finally, we apply these to the relay circuit for an electric furnace and analyze its operation with the mark flow of the resulting EMFG. The formal translation from relay circuits to EMFGs makes the analysis easy so that these results can be used to design, modelling, the fault detection and the maintenance.

  • We propose a link adaptation and selection method for the links constituting an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) based wireless relay network. The proposed link adaptation and selection method selects the forwarding, modulation, and channel coding schemes providing the highest end-to-end throughput and decides whether to use the relay or not. The link adaptation and selection is done for each sub-channel based on instantaneous signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) conditions in the source-to-destination, source-to-relay and relay-to-destination links. The considered forwarding schemes are amplify and forward (AF) and simple adaptive decode and forward (DF). Efficient adaptive modulation and coding decision rules are provided for various relaying schemes. The proposed end-to-end link adaptation and selection method ensures that the end-to-end throughput is always larger than or equal to that of transmissions without relay and non-adaptive relayed transmissions. Our evaluations show that over the region where relaying improves the end-to-end throughput, the DF scheme provides significant throughput gain over the AF scheme provided that the error propagation is avoided via error detection techniques. We provide a frame structure to enable the proposed link adaptation and selection method for orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA)-time division duplex relay networks based on the IEEE 802.16e standard.
