  • Energy harvesting (EH) and network coding (NC) have emerged as two promising technologies for future wireless networks. In this paper, we combine them together in a single system and then present a time switching-based network coding relaying (TSNCR) protocol for the two-way relay system, where an energy constrained relay harvests energy from the transmitted radio frequency (RF) signals from two sources, and then helps the two-way relay information exchange between the two sources with the consumption of the harvested energy. To evaluate the system performance, we derive an explicit expression of the outage probability for the proposed TSNCR protocol. In order to explore the system performance limit, we formulate an optimization problem to minimize the system outage probability. Since the problem is non-convex and cannot be directly solved, we design a genetic algorithm (GA)-based optimization algorithm for it. Numerical results validate our theoretical analysis and show that in such an EH two-way relay system, if NC is applied, the system outage probability can be greatly decreased. Moreover, it is shown that the relay position greatly affects the system performance of TSNCR, where relatively worse outage performance is achieved when the relay is placed in the middle of the two sources. This is the first time to observe such a phenomena in EH two-way relay systems.

  • In this paper, multiple-relay cooperative communication network with multiple antennas is considered. Applying the soft-decision-and-forward protocol to this system, pairwise error probability(PEP) is derived and then symbol error rate(SER) is also calculated. However, in general, signals are transmitted through the orthogonal channel in the multiple-relay cooperative communication network for the prevention of interference, which is inefficient in terms of the throughput. For the improvement of throughput, the relay selection is considered, where the relay having the maximum instantaneous end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio is chosen. Performance of the system is analyzed in terms of PEP and SER. As the number of the relay increases, relay selection method outperforms the conventional multiple-relay transmission system where all relays participate in the second time slot.

  • IEEE 802.16j MR networks introduce RSs (Relay Stations) within the IEEE 802.16 system in order to enhance the data throughput and extend the coverage. However, the current standardization defines that the BS (Base Station) controls MS's (Mobile Station's) handover, not only it induces the large signaling overhead but also handover latency could increase. In this paper, we propose a handover protocol in the MR networks where the high capability RSs that can process the MS's control functions are deployed. First, we classify the handover scenarios for the MR networks with the high capability RSs. Then, we define the MAC handover procedure, corresponding MAC management messages and the transmission routes for the proposed messages so that an 802.16e MS can perform seamless handover without noticing it is attached to an MR network. The simulation results show that the proposed handover protocol not only reduces the MAC management message overhead transferred through the wireless links compared to IEEE 802.16j/D1, which is the current standard for MR networks, but also performs the rapider and more secure MS handover than IEEE 802.16e and IEEE 802.16j/D1.

  • The prompt and accurate location determination of the nodes of the wireless indoor shipboard networks is crucial to forming the stable wireless shipboard sensor networks. To this end in this paper it can be achieved through the measurement of the bi-directional channel qualities among the nodes after the locations of the sensor nodes temporarily placed. For the 1st stage the piconet-type sensor networks are considered to measure the channel qualities between a specific node and the cluster node which is the master node. After finishing the 1st stage measurement the nodes needing the relay nodes are selected and the measurement action goes into the 2nd stage. In the 2nd stage the measurement between a candidate relay node and the node needing a relay node starts to begin. After the 2nd stage the relay nodes to connect to the cluster node are fixed and the information delivery paths between a node and the cluster head are established. In this paper the measurement results in the realistic environment are gathered and analysed to show that the measurement procedure can be applied in the wireless indoor shipboard networks.

  • In some wireless sensor networks, the sensor nodes are required to be located sparsely at designated positions over a wide area, introducing the problem of adding minimum number of relay nodes to interconnect the sensor nodes. The problem finds its form in literature: the Minimum number of Steiner Points. Since it is known to be NP-hard, this paper proposes an approximation scheme to estimate the minimum number of relay nodes through the properties of the abstract from. Reducing the number of nodes in a sensor network, the amount of data exchange over the net will be far decreased.

  • The WiMedia Alliance has specified a Distributed Medium Access Control (D-MAC) protocol based on UWB for high speed wireless home networks and WPANs. In this paper, we propose a novel cooperative communication protocol adaptive to current UWB link transmission rate. The proposed cooperative communication protocol has compatibility with current WiMedia D-MAC and Wireless USB standard and is executed at each device according to a Relay Node Selection (RNS) criterion.

  • This paper considers 2-hop wireless cooperative communications networks with fixed decode-and-forward relays. Specifically, we first derive the closed-form BER expression for theoretically evaluating the end-to-end performance of these networks. Then, based on this expression and long-tenn fading statistics, we propose a power allocation method for source and relay. Such a method brings about multiple advantages in tenn of spectral efficiency and implementation complexity over other power allocation methods based on instantaneous fading statistics. A variety of numerical results reveal that the cooperative communications scheme with the proposed power allocation significantly outperforms that with the equal power allocation and the direct transmission scheme for any position of the relay subject to the same total transmit power constraint.

  • Internet protocol television (IPTV) service depends on the network quality of service (QoS) and bandwidth of the broadband service provider. IEEE 802.16j mobile multihop relay Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access networks have the opportunity to offer high bandwidth capacity by introducing relay stations. However, to actually satisfy QoS requirements for offering IPTV services (HDTV, SDTV, Web TV, and mobile TV) for heterogeneous users' requests, providers must use a video server for each IPTV service type, which increases the network load, especially bandwidth consumption and forwarding time. In this paper, we present a solution for forwarding IPTV video streaming to diverse subscribers via an 802.16j broadband wireless access network. In particular, we propose a new multicast tree construction and aggregation mechanism based on the unique property of prime numbers. Performance evaluation results show that the proposed scheme reduces both bandwidth consumption and forwarding time.

  • Cognitive radio has been recently considered a promising technology to improve spectrum utilization by enabling secondary access to licensed bands that are not used by primary users temporarily or spatially. A prerequisite to this secondary access is the lack of interference to the primary system. This requirement makes spectrum sensing a key process for cognitive radio. In this study, we consider amplify and forward (AF)-based cooperative spectrum sensing for cognitive radio networks where multiple relay nodes are utilized to amplify and forward the primary user signal for better spectrum sensing, and maximum ratio combining is used for fusion detection by a cognitive coordinator. Further, the detection probability and the bit error rate of AF-based cooperative spectrum sensing are analyzed in fading multiple cognitive relay channels. The simulation results show that the AF-based cooperative spectrum sensing scheme outperforms the conventional scheme.

  • Cooperative communications using relays in wireless networks have similar effects of multiple-input and multiple-output without the need of multiple antennas at each node. To implement cooperation into a system, efficient protocols are desired. In IEEE 802.11 families such as a/b/g, mobile stations can automatically adjust transmission rates according to channel conditions. However throughput performance degradation is observed by low-rate stations in multi-rate circumstances resulting in so-called performance anomaly. In this paper, we propose active relay-based cooperative medium access control (AR-CMAC) protocol, in which active relays desiring to transmit their own data for cooperation participate in relaying, and it is designed to increase throughput as a solution to performance anomaly. We have analyzed the performance of the simplified AR-CMAC using an embedded Markov chain model to demonstrate the gain of AR-CMAC and to verify it with our simulations. Simulations in an infrastructure network with an IEEE 802.11b/g access point show noticeable improvement than the legacy schemes.
