  • 3,4-Bis-(3,4-dicarboxyphenylcarboxyethoxy)-4'-nitrostilbene dianhydride was prepared and reacted with 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)dianiline to yield a novel Y-type polyimide containing the 3,4-dioxynitrostilbenyl group as an NLO-chromophore, which constituted part of the polymer backbone. The resulting polyimide was soluble in polar solvents such as acetone and N,N-dimethylformamide. The polymer exhibited good thermal stability up to $370^{\circ}C$ in the thermogravimetric analysis. The glass-transition temperature ($T_g$) obtained from the differential scanning calorimetry thermogram was near to $153^{\circ}C$. The second harmonic generation (SHG) coefficient ($d_{33}$) of the poled polymer film at the fundamental wavelength of $1064\;cm^{-1}$ was around $2.15\;{\times}\;10^{-8}\;esu$ (9.01 pm/V). The dipole alignment exhibited exceptionally high thermal stability even at a temperature $30^{\circ}C$ above the $T_g$, and there was no SHG decay below $180^{\circ}C$ because of the partial main chain character of the polymer structure.

  • A molecular dynamic computer experiment was performed on a system of 108 particles composed of a single polymer chain and solvent molecules. The state considered was in the immediate neighborhood of the triple point of the system. The polymer itself is an analog of a freely jointed chain. The Lennard-Jones potential was used to represent the interactions between all particles except for that between the chain elements forming a bond in the polymer chain, for which the interaction was expressed by a harmonic potential. The self-diffusion coefficient and velocity autocorrelation function (VACF) of a polymer were calculated at various chain lengths $N_p$, and various interaction strengths between solvent molecules and a polymer chain element. For self-diffusion coefficients D, the Einstein relation holds good; as chain length $N_p$ increases the D value decreases, and D also decreases as ${\varepsilon}_{cs}$ (the interaction parameter between the chain element and solvent molecules) increases. The relaxation time of velocity autocorrelation decreases as ${\varepsilon}_{cs}$ increases, and it is constant for various chain lengths. The diffusion coefficients in various conditions reveal that our systems are in a free draining limit as is well known from the behavior of low molecular weight polymers, this also agrees with the Kirkwood-Riesman theory.

  • In this paper, the wave propagation in a generalized thermo elastic plate embedded in an elastic medium (Winkler model) is studied based on the Lord-Schulman (LS) and Green-Lindsay (GL) generalized two dimensional theory of thermo elasticity. Two displacement potential functions are introduced to uncouple the equations of motion. The frequency equations that include the interaction between the plate and foundation are obtained by the traction free boundary conditions using the Bessel function solutions. The numerical calculations are carried out for the material Zinc and the computed non-dimensional frequency and attenuation coefficient are plotted as the dispersion curves for the plate with thermally insulated and isothermal boundaries. The wave characteristics are found to be more stable and realistic in the presence of thermal relaxation times and the foundation parameter. A comparison of the results for the case with no thermal effects shows well agreement with those by the membrane theory.

  • We observed strain evolution of P3HT crystals in P3HT:PCBM films and the effect of Al electrode on the evolution during real time annealing process. Based on simple assumptions, both relaxed lattice parameters and thermal expansion coefficient could be quantitatively determined. P3HT:PCBM films displayed tensile strain in as-prepared samples regardless of the presence of an Al layer. In the absence of Al layer, P3HT crystals showed only strain relaxation at an annealing temperature of $180^{\circ}C$. Meanwhile In the presence of an Al layer, the strain was relaxed and changed to compressive strain at around 120C annealing temperature, which indicated a tightening of the thiophene ring packing. These behaviors support the improved performance of devices fabricated by post annealing process.

  • It has been known that the inertial dynamics has a little effect on the reaction rate in solutions. In this work, however, we find that for diffusion-controlled reactions between a ligand and a receptor on the cell surface there is a noticeable inertial dynamic effect on the reaction rate. We estimate the magnitude of the inertial dynamic effect by comparing the approximate analytic results obtained with and without the inertial dynamic effect included. The magnitude of the inertial dynamic effect depends on the friction coefficient of the ligand as well as on the relative scale of the receptor size to the distance traveled by the ligand during its velocity relaxation time.

  • The mixing length theory is extended to close the momentum queations for two-phase turbulent flow at a first-order closure level. It is assumed that the mass fraction of the particles is of the order of unity, that the particle size is so small that the particles are fully suspended is the primary fluid, and that the relaxation time scale of the particles is of the same order as the time scale of the energy containing eddies so that the suspended particles are responsive to the fluctuating turbulent field. The bulk motion of the particles is treated as a secondary fluid with its own coefficient of momentum transport. The proposed closure is uniformly destributed acress the pipe section. Predicted velocity profiles and the friction factors are in good agreement with avaiable experimental data.

  • This study has been designed to develop a health behavior scale. Data were collected through a survey over a period of two month period. Subjects who participated in the study were 298 Korean adults. The author used a convenience sampling method. The analysis of the data was done with SPSS PC for descriptive statistics and factor analysis. Initially 34 items were generated from the interview data of twenty one adults and from literature review and survey. This preliminary scale was analyzed for a reliability and validity. The results are as follow : 1. Crombach Coefficient alpha for the 30 items was .7907. 2. Factor analysis was done in order to confirm construct validity and nine factor were extracted from the results. These contributed 54.4% of the variance in the total score. 3. Nine factor label were 'exercise' 'stress management' 'energy conservation' 'limit in liking' 'selection of food' 'ingestion of natural food' 'health examination' 'relaxation' and 'nutrition'. The author suggests that this scale could be adequately applied in assessing the health behavior of Korean adults. The results of using this scale in a study can contribute to designing an appropriate health promotion strategy.

  • The role of the strain energy and phase stability in the diffuse phase transition have been investigated in the highly disordered solid solution, (Pb1-xBax)(Zr0.4Ti0.6)O3 (0.2 x 0.4). X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that tetragonality (c/a) decreases with the increasing Ba content. Also as the Ba content increases, phase transition becomes more diffuse and at the same time dielectric relaxation as a function of measured frequencies in the 1KHz-10MHz range occurs very pronouncedly. In the Ba content range, 0.2 x 0.35, hysteresis loops are routinely observed and the loop is observed to narrow shape as the Ba content increases but becomes very slim at 40mol% Ba content. Moreover thermal analysis shows that there is no abrupt change in the thermal expansion coefficient below the apparent transition temperature at which dielectric constant becomes maximum. From the above results, it has been concluded that creation of the strain energy due to the distorthion that occurred during the phase transition suppresses diffuse phase transition.

  • Effects of CaO on microwave dielectric properties of (Ba, Pb)O-Nd2O3-TiO2 ceramic ystem were investigated. As the content of CaO increases, the sintered bulk density decreases due to the decrease of sinterability. However, with increasing the sintering tmperature, the relative dielectric constants increases. This has been attributed on the formation of the 2nd phase inclusion, TiO2(rutile). The Q values increase due to the compensation effect of Ca ions up to 1 wt%, and then decrease due to the interfacial relaxation effects. The temperature coefficient of resonance frequency increases to a positive direction with increasing the amounts of CaO.

  • An algorithm to symmetric radius of $15ms^{-1}$ isotaches of tropical cyclones is suggested using infrared (IR) imagery of geostationary satellite. It is assumed that symmetric tangential winds outside the maximum winds exponentially decrease with the radial distances of the tropical cyclone, which has a clear eye-wall structure. Four parameters for estimation of the tropical cyclone size are center location, maximum sustained wind, radius of the maximum wind, and relaxation coefficient for the decreasing rate with distances of the tropical cyclone. The estimation results are limitedly verified as comparing to surface winds of polar orbiting satellite such as ASCAT data.
