  • Psilothallia is a ceramiaceous red algal. genus that includes three species worldwide: P. dentate, P. siliculosa, and P. striate. The latter two species are limited to Australian waters, and P. dentate occurs in Japan. We here report the detailed morphology of P. dentate, and also determined plastid protein-coding psbA in P. dentate and putative relatives. Psilothallia dentate is distinguished by compressed thalli with alternate-distichous determinate branchlets, six periaxial cells, rhizoidal filaments in axes, cystocarps with 7-8 involucral filaments, spermatangia on branched filaments, and tetrahedrally divided tetrasporangia on branched filaments. Psilothallia dentate is also unusual in that cystocarps, spermatangial clusters, and tetrasporangial tufts are formed on short adventitious indeterminate branches arising on axils of determinate branchlets. The phylogenetic trees of psbA sequences show that P. dentata was nested in a monophyletic Glade comprising Ptilota, Neoptilota, and Plumaria. This result suggests that the taxonomic position of P. dentate may be transferred from the tribe Rhodocallideae to the Ptiloteae.

  • The followings are the findings of a study on university student's clothing disposition behavior depending on their personality and environmental consciousness: 1. University student's personality factors were classified into perceived consumer effectiveness, globalism, alienation, conservatism, and a sense of social responsibility. 2. The personality factors are found to have significant influences on both economic and altruistic disposition behavior. 3. In terms of the economic disposition behavior, people in the groups with high environmental consciousness tend to trade unused clothing with other things rather than to sell them for the benefit of economic gains. With regard to the altruistic disposition behavior, they also tend to give the clothing to their close people, for example family members or relatives, rather than to donate them to churches or charitable organizations.

  • Streptococci and enterococci, isolates from the rumen content of mouflons and European bisons were isolated. The total counts of these species reached the values(log 10 ${\pm}$ S.E.M.) $7.3{\pm}0.21$; $6.1{\pm}0.06$ bacteria per one ml of the rumen content in streptococci and $3.6{\pm}0.20$; $3.17{\pm}0.18$ bacteria per one ml of the rumen content in enterococci, Strains isolated were allotted to te species Streptococcus bovis(AM1, AM2, AM3, AM4), Enterococcus faecium(EH1, EFG2, EC3) and Enterococcus faecalis (EFA1, EFD2). Bactera presented belong to the strains with low urease and ${\alpha}$-amylase activities. The majority of isolates were polyresistant. Each strain produced bacteriocin - like substance with effect against at least of one of relatives species as indicators used. The most of inhibition zones were hazy with the width 2-6 mm in diameter.

  • Bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) have been suggested as a new technology for wastewater treatment while accomplishing energy and chemical generation. This study describes the performance of BESs based on mixed culture that are capable of reducing carbon dioxide to acetate. The cathode potential was a critical factor that affected the performance of the BESs. The rate of acetate production increased as the electrode potential became more negative, from 0.38 mM $d^{-1}$ (-900 mV vs. Ag/AgCl) to 2.35 mM $d^{-1}$ (-1,100 mV), while the electron recovery efficiency of carbon dioxide reduction to acetate increased from 53.6% to 89.5%. The microbial population was dominated by relatives of Acetobacterium woodii when a methanogenic inhibitor was added to the BESs initially.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine prepurchase information seeking behavior and postpurchase satisfaction levels for the diet products. Ninty-one women who were living in Cheongju-city area were selected. The survey was conducted during 1996. 7. 25$\sim$8. 12, and questionnare and SAS PC program were utilized. The major findings were as follows : 1. The level of information seeking activity was found to be rather low level, 9.2/20. 2. Friend colleague neighborhood were found to be the most important information source. 3. The level of information seeking according to diet product attributes was found to be rather high, 2.5/3. 4. The level of satisfaction was found to be rather low, 1.6/3. 5. Positive relationships were found between satisfaction level and friend colleague neighborhood, and family relatives out of 6 information sources.

  • This study examined structured social network types and their relationship to quality on life satisfaction of older adults. Respondents were 418 adults aged 60 or older living alone or as couples. The data was analyzed using K-means cluster analysis. Four networks types were identified: diverse, friend-neighbor focused, family focused, and restricted. Life satisfaction was highest for individuals in the diverse network group and lowest for individuals in the restricted network group. Stepwise multiple regression analysis indicated that life satisfaction of the elderly was affected by the diverse network, family focused network, the relationship quality with children, the relationship quality with neighbors, and the relationship quality with relatives. Results suggested that having diverse social network in close proximity is very important in old age and structural network types may have important practical implications for improving the quality of life among the elderly.

  • Two new records of scolecid polychaetes, Praxillella pacifica Berkeley, 1929 and Naineris dendritica (Kinberg, 1867), collected from Korean waters are reported here with descriptions and illustrations. Praxillella pacifica can be distinguished from its congeners by the number of asetigerous segments on the posterior region of the body and features of the anal cone and neuropodial spines on setigers 2 and 3. Naineris dendritica is distinguishable from its relatives by the morphology of thoracic neuropodial lobes and the thoracic uncini at the inferior position. In the present paper, keys to Praxillella and Naineris species from Korean waters were also provided.

  • Given the global impact of the AIDS pandemic, it is necessary to take every measure to prevent an epidemic of this disease in Korea. The only available strategy is prevention. Considering college students as a potential risk group, this study examined their knowledge of, and attitudes toward AIDS. In this study, 399 students from three colleges in Pusan and Uoolsan were examined for their attitudes to, and knowledge of AIDS. Findings indicate that the majority of the students(90%) had basic knowledge on the transmission and the prevention of the disease. However, most of them, including nursing students, lacked knowledge as to the etiological agent, major symptoms and available diagnostic techniques. To the questions designed to examine social attitude towards AIDS patients, the students showed a tendency to view AIDS patients as responsible for their own illness. Interestingly, they showed sympathy to their imaginary friends and relatives suffering from AIDS. The study findings suggest a need for the development of AIDS educational programs for college students.

  • The objectives of this study were to identify the cause of consumers for purchasing foods from various distribution channels, and to compare with characteristics of consumers by each distribution channel. The distribution channels as the basis of comparison were four types namely, the consumer cooperatives / environment-friendly specialized stores, large retail discount stores, direct marketing and parents / relatives. The researcher developed a questionnaires, and a total of 190 questionnaires were collected and 186 of them were analyzed. The data were analyzed utilizing the SPSS-WIN 12.0K program and major statistical technique were mean, percentage, t-test, Chi-square test, ANOVA. There were differences in the quality perception, demographical characteristics, relationship with rural communities and personal experiences of the consumers according to the distribution channels.

  • This study investigated whether infant child care experience, alone or in combination with mother/child factors, is associated with attachment security. Participants were forty 12-to 18-month-old infants and their mothers. Infants were observed in the Strange Situation to assess the pattern of infant-mother attachment; the Observational Ratings of the Caregiving Environment was used to assess the caregiving environment. Mothers were interviewed with the questionnaires and observed in the laboratory "living room". There were significant main effects of maternal sensitivity and responsiveness and of stability of care on attachment security and on insecure/avoidance. Significant interaction effects revealed that infants were more likely to be secure when high maternal sensitivity/responsiveness was combined with good quality child care, non-maternal care initiated prior to six months of age, or care by close relatives.
