The Soil-Water Characteristics Curve (SWCC) is affected by the initial density of soil under unsaturated condition. Also, the characteristic of hydraulic conductivity is changed by the initial density of soil. To study the effect of initial density of unsaturated soil, SWCC and the Hydraulic Conductivity Function (HCF) of Jumoonjin sand with various relative densities, 40%, 60% and 75% were measured in both drying and wetting processes. As the results of SWCC estimated by van Genuchten (1980) model, the parameter related to Air Entry Value(AEV), ${\alpha}$ in the wetting process is larger than that in drying process, but the parameters related to the SWCC slope, n and the residual water content, m are larger than those in wetting process. The AEV is increased or Water Entry Value (WEV) is decreased with increasing the relative density of sand. The AEV is larger than the WEV at the same relative density of sand. As the results of HCF estimated by van Genuchten (1980) model which is one of the parameter estimation methods, the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity maintained at a saturated one in the low level of matric suctions and then suddenly decreased just before the AEV or the WEV. The saturated hydraulic conductivity in drying process is larger than that in wetting process. The saturated hydraulic conductivity is decreased with increasing the relative density of sand in both drying and wetting processes. Also, the hysteresis in unsaturated HCFs between drying and wetting process was occurred like the hysteresis in SWCCs. According to the test results, the AEV on SWCC is decreased and the saturated hydraulic conductivity is increased with increasing the initial density. It means that SWCC and HCF are affected by the initial density in the unsaturated soil.
Pile foundations used as offshore support structures are dominantly subjected to cyclic lateral loads due to wind and waves. In this study, a series of cyclic lateral load tests were performed on a pre-installed aluminum flexible pile in sandy soil with three different relative densities (40%, 70% and 90%) in order to evaluate the effect of cyclic lateral loads on lateral load capacity of a pile. The cyclic lateral loads increased the lateral load capacity of a pile at 40% relative density, whereas they decreased it at 70% and 90% relative densities. This can be explained by the fact that the cyclic lateral loads slightly densified the surrounding soil in relatively loose sand (40%), while the surrounding soil was disturbed in relatively dense sand (70% and 90%). These effects were more obvious as the cyclic lateral load amplitude increased, being independent with the saturation. Also, from the test results, an empirical equation for the lateral load capacity of a cyclic laterally loaded pile in sandy soil was developed in terms of relative density of the soil and the cyclic lateral load amplitude.
This research assessed the feasibility of using high-resolution aerial images and deep learning algorithms for estimating the land-use and land-cover areas at the Approach 3 level, as outlined by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The results from different sampling densities of high-resolution (51 cm) aerial images were compared with the land-cover map, provided by the Ministry of Environment, and analyzed to estimate the accuracy of the land-use and land-cover areas. Transfer learning was applied to the VGG16 architecture for the deep learning model, and sampling densities of 4 × 4 km, 2 × 4 km, 2 × 2 km, 1 × 2 km, 1 × 1 km, 500 × 500 m, and 250 × 250 m were used for estimating and evaluating the areas. The overall accuracy and kappa coefficient of the deep learning model were 91.1% and 88.8%, respectively. The F-scores, except for the pasture category, were >90% for all categories, indicating superior accuracy of the model. Chi-square tests of the sampling densities showed no significant difference in the area ratios of the land-cover map provided by the Ministry of Environment among all sampling densities except for 4 × 4 km at a significance level of p = 0.1. As the sampling density increased, the standard error and relative efficiency decreased. The relative standard error decreased to ≤15% for all land-cover categories at 1 × 1 km sampling density. These results indicated that a sampling density more detailed than 1 x 1 km is appropriate for estimating land-cover area at the local level.
An extensive tension experiment was carried out to examine the variation of tensile strength in moist sand having moisture contents in the range of 0.5% < w < 4.0% with newly developed direct tension apparatus. It was observed that tensile strength of sand varied as functions of moisture content, relative density, presence of fines, and level of precompression. Tensile strength increases with increasing moisture content and fines, and this trend is more noticeable at increasing relative densities. However, the influences of relative density and fines on the tensile strength are substantially dependent on the water content. These effects are reduced at low moisture levels (w < 0.5%). The precompression effects also depend on the water content but less on the duration and level of the precompression.

The laboratory tests on geogrid-reinforced sand were conducted with considering embedment effect. The relative densities of sand are 60% and 80%, respectively. The embedment depths of foundation were varied as D$\_$f/B=0, 0.5, 1.0. Based on the model test results, (u/B)$\_$cr/, BCR$\_$u/, and (b/B)$\_$cr/, were determined. The optimum depth of reinforcement was determined. The embedment depth of foundation is greatly contributed on the bearing capacity of geogrid-reinforced sand.

The thermomechanical elasto-plastic problems in hot forging of the porous metals are analyzed using the thermo-elasto-plastic finite element method. This finite element program has been formulated using the yield condition advanced by Lee and Kim and developed using the thermo-elasto-plastic time integration procedure. Thermomechanical responses and densification behaviors of the porous metals during hot forging are calcucated at various initial relative densities, strain rates and temperatures. The calculated results are in good agreement with experimental data.

Measurements errors due to sound velocity effect on vibrating gas densimeters were described. Nitrogen was used to calibrate the densimeter, and oxygen was employed to determine a coefficient for the compensation of sound velocity effect. Sound velocity effects were shown with methane at temperatures of 7.97, 19.93 and 39.57 .deg. C, and pressures up to 3.6 Mpa. A relative error of about 1% was introduced when the nitrogen calibrated densimeter was used to measure densities of pure methane. A method of sound velocity effect compensation was able to reduce the error down to 0.1%.

The shear strength of cohesionless Soils results from particle-to-particle friction and structural resistance by interlocking. And, the shear strength of soils is subjected to vary depending on the internal states and external condtions. If the volume change occurring in the soils and stress-strain relationships under the internal and external changes can accrurately he described, it is possible to predict the behaviors of soils. To accomplish these objectives a series of drained triaxial compression tests and isotropic compression test was performed on the Banwol sand at different relative densities ranging from 20% to 80% and different confining pressures ranging from 0.4kgf/cm$^2$ to l2kgf/cm$^2$. The results and main conclusions of the study are summarized as follows; 1.When the relative density or the confining pressure is increased, the maximum deviator stress is increased. The ratio of the maximum deviator stress and the confining pressure is linearly proportional to the relative density. 2.It is observed that the dilatancy depends not only upon its relative density but also the confining stress, and that the maximum deviator stress is obtained after the diatancy occurs. 3.The volume of sands undergoes initial contraction prior to the dilatancy occurred by strain softening. The dilatancy rate eventually approaches the critical state or a constant volume. 4.At lower strains, Poisson's ratio approaches a certain minimum value regadless of the state of materials. At larger strains, however, the ratio is increased as the relative density is increased. 5.It is observed that the modulus of elasticity is linearly proportional to the relative density and the pressure. 6.When the relative density is increased, the friction angle of sands is linearly increased. 7.When the relative density is increased, the expansion index and the compression index are linearly decreased, and the ratio of the two is about 1/3.
The effect of individual density on the growth and survival of Laminaria japonica was experimentally evaluated. Four density treatments of young sporophytes (0.63 cm In maximum length) grown in the laboratory were transplanted to the southeastern coast of Korea and their survivorship and growth rate were measured twice a month from January to July, 1996. Plants showed higher survivorship at low density. Final densities at three lowest densities were similar, ranging from 34 to 38 inds${\cdot}100 cm^{-2}$. Planis at the highest density, however, suffered greater decline than at lower densities, and only 21 plants remained at the end of this study. Mean frond size (length and width) fluctuated throughout the study period at four densities. During the first two mouths after outplanting, mean frond size was negatively correlated with initial density, However, the size was density independent after three months. As stand density increased, size-frequency distribution through time tended to be more positively skewed. The 10 largest plants grew faster in frond size and attained larger size in the lower density. There was a positive relationship between plant size and relative growth rate (or survival). The slope of yield-density (Y-D) relationships at four densities ranged from -0.060 to -0.137. The study suggests that density can strongly affect the survival and growth of this alga. The density-dependent survival and growth patterns, however, were not strictly consistent with those of terrestrial plants.

This study presented the reinforcing effect of sands by using newly devised 3D Tirecell. Plate loading tests for sand were conducted for different relative density and number of reinforced layers. From the tests, the ultimate bearing capacity of reinforced sand increased with increasing relative densities. The effect of reinforced layers with 0.4B interval is limited to 2 layers and further reinforcing effects can not be obtained beyond 3 layers. Especially the bearing capacity increased remarkably at 1 layer of Tirecell reinforcement and the degree of increase was small for 1 layer to 2 layers increase of reinforcement. Test results show that the reinforcing effect of Tirecell is prominent compared with commercial geocell in the literature.
