The aim of present study was to explore there were relationships among familism(collectivism vs. individualism), filial responsibility, and helping behavior of the middle-aged women towards parents. The respondents were 552 married women in their thirties, forties and fifties. OK Sun-hwa(1989)'s Seelbach (1978)'s, Cicirelli (1983)'s and Chang Sun-ju(1989)'s scale were utilized to tap the familism, filial responsibility, and helping behavior of the middle age daughter and daughter in low respectively. The major results of the study were summerized as follows; 1) Married women perceived relatively high levels of familism and filial responsibility and a moderate level of helping towards their parents and in-law parents as well. Among the demographic variables, education, income and age of the married daughters and daughters-in-law were found to be correlated to both familism and filial responsibility of support for their parents, Also, education and age were negatively related to helping behaviors. 2) Marred women reported similar levels of filial responsibility of support towards parents in law and their own parents, However significant difference were found between the amounts of helping behavior towards parents-in-law and their own parents. 3) Regression analysis revealed that living arrangement(living with parents or not ), the level of filial responsibility , and education level provided to be significant predictors on the helping behavior towards parent-in-law explaining 46% of the total variance. On the other hand, filial responsibility , living pattern, and income level for the parents were powerflu in predicting helping behavior towards their own parents accounting 24% of the total explained variance. 4) A path analysis model indicated that while educational level and living arrangement influenced directly to helping behavior toward parent-in-law, living arrangement, income level of parents and familism were directly associated with helping behavior for parents of their own. Therefor , helping behavior of the middles aged women was significantly mediated by familism and filial responsibility for support towards both parents-in-law and their own parents.
Objective: This study examined the correlation between variables influencing teacher sensitivity to infant classes in Educare Center teachers and teacher sensitivity, by classifying their personal psychological, socio-psychological, and work environment variables. Furthermore, it aimed to inquire the extent to which these variables influence teacher sensitivity. Methods: The study included 236 Educare Center teachers in charge of infant classes working in infant-caring facilities. Based on stepwise multiple regression analysis, a significance test was conducted for each variable. Results: Firstly, according to the correlations regarding teacher sensitivity to infant classes, for sensitive interaction, emotional stability showed significant positive correlation, while there were significant negative correlations with relationships with the director, colleagues,and parents; mean working hours in other places; and mean daily personal time. For insensitive interaction, there were significant negative correlations with emotional stability and mean daily break time, while there were significant positive correlations with relationships with the director, colleagues, and parents. Secondly, regarding the influences on teacher sensitivity to infant classes, for sensitive interaction, the most significant influences consisted in the relationships with colleagues and parents. On the other hand, for insensitive interaction, the most significant influences were the relationship with colleagues and emotional stability. Conclusion: Reducing interpersonal relationship stress and increasing the emotional stability of Educare Center teachers will increase their sensitivity level. Furthermore, the quality of care will be improved.
The main purpose of this study was to examine whether different cultures affect attachment style by comparing Korean and American adolescents, with a focus on parent attachment and peer attachment. Data were collected from middle and high school students(291 Korean adolescents, 158 American adolescents), and the participants were asked to report on the revised version of the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment(IPPA-R). The analysis showed significant differences on both parent and peer attachment between Korean and American adolescents: Korean adolescents had more negative relationships with their parents compared to American adolescents. In contrast, Korean adolescents had more positive relations(high trust and communication score, low alienation score) with their friends than American adolescents. More results on the relationships between attachment style and socio-environmental variables were presented, and each of these results could be interpreted by cultural difference. Based on these results, parent-child programs and peer programs that can enrich the relationships that a child has with his or her parents and friends were introduced for researchers, educators, teachers, and counselors. The implications and recommendations for future research were also presented.
Purpose: This study was done to provide a basis for future theory development by analyzing the phenomenon of parent-child relationships based on the 4 areas described by Kim (2000). Methods: A descriptive research design was used to identify research trends in nursing related to the phenomenon of parent-child relationships. Results: Before 1990, the trend in research design was quantitative designs, but since 1990, qualitative research has also been done. Mothers were the most popular research target for these studies followed by mothers and children together. In analyzing the 4 areas outlined by Kim (2000), it was found that most of the research was done on client domain and parents. The research concepts relevant to the essentialistic concept of research target, were 'child rearing', 'breast-feeding' and 'attachment'. For problematic concepts, the concept of 'stress' was continuously dealt with over the period and for the health-care experiential concept, 'adjustment' and 'coping' by parents were the main focus of research. Conclusion: The results show that parent-child relationship research was mainly concentrated on research participants and concepts. In the future, improvements should be made in research development of nursing practice programs and development of theory, to address the complete phenomenon of parent-child relationships.
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among delay gratification, delay strategy, and parents' child-rearing attitude. The participants of the study were 62, 18-36 month old infants, who demonstrated individual differences in the level of delay gratification and their mothers. The instruments of the study were infant's delay gratification and delay strategy were assessed by Mischele(1974) and the parents' responded to the parents' child-rearing attitude(Cho et al., 1999). Data were collected by menas of conducting observations on infants in experimental settings and completing questionnaires with mothers. The results of this study were as follows: 1. The delay gratification of infants differed accordingly to their age. Older infants displayed increased time in showing their delay gratification, while younger infants relatively exhibited shortened time. There was no significant difference in infants' sex and the order of the birth. 2. Following the age factor, the distraction strategy in the delay strategy played a significant difference to infants. Older infants required a frequent use of the distraction strategy in comparison to younger infants. 3. The previous two factors - delay gratification and distraction strategy-showed a positive relationship. 4. The delay gratification was significantly influenced by infants' age, parents' attitude, direct facing strategy, and infants' distraction strategy. However, the delay gratification was insignificantly accounted for by infants' sex.
Purpose: This mixed-methods study was conducted to compare and analyze the perceptions of children and their parents regarding the meaning of the children's life. Methods: First, children's and parents' perceptions of the meaning of life were analyzed using a quantitative approach, and the cognitive differences between children and parents were then confirmed through a qualitative approach. We integrated the collected data comprehensively. Results: Ten significant differences (awareness of strong points, recognizing oneself as a precious being, relationships with friends, happy memories, liking people, experiencing difficulty, dreams and goals, experiencing love, appreciating life, helping people who are poorer than me) were identified between children and parents. The results of the content analysis of the qualitative data were divided into two variables: children's experiences of the meaning of life (78 significant statements, 32 sub-themes, and 10 themes) and parents' perceptions of the meaning of life of their children (89 significant statements, 36 sub-themes, and 10 themes). Conclusion: Based on these results, we propose developing meaning-centered intervention programs for children and parents and applying them for educational purposes. By doing so, we expect that meaning-centered education for elementary school students will become more active.
This paper investigated materialism inclination of the parents recognized by the adolescents and analysed the relationships between 5 categorized types about parents' materialism inclination and financial characteristics of the adolescents. Statistical analysis was achieved by using Cronbach'$\alpha$, paired t-test, one-way ANOVA, two-way ANOVA, Duncan's multiple range test, chi-square analysis, and Ward' hierarchical cluster analysis with a total of 801 questionnaires. The results are summarized as follows: First, the adolescents felt that calculated points of father and mother's materialism inclination were lower than median points and mother's inclination for materialism was higher than that of father. Second, five categories were classified according to materialism inclination of parents. First classified category was the type which showed both parents had little interest in materials and the second category was the type which father had strong interest in materials. The third one was the type which mother had strong interest in materials. The last two categories were the ones which both parents had much interest in materials. Final result of this study revealed that attitudes of the adolescents for materialism and money were higher for those whose parents had strong interest in materialism than those whose parents had little materialism interest. They showed not only the behaviors of impulsive and overspending consumption but also low financial satisfaction and high financial stress.
This paper examines the intergenerational time transfers between married women and their co-residing elderly parents, and how they affect married women's labor force participation and work hour. The sample was drawn from the "2004 Time Use Survey" conducted by Korea National Statistical Office and the Heckman's 2-step model was estimated to examine these relationships. We find that women's caregiving time for their elderly parents reduces their likelihood of participating in the labor force. On the contrary, parental time transfers for married women increases the probability of their labor force participation. We find no evidence that the actual hours of paid work is related to the time transfers between married women and their elderly parents. In other words, after married women decide to participate in the labor force, their work hours are not affected by the time spent for parents and time gained from parents to them. Parental income is positively associated with the married women's labor force participation whereas husband's income is negatively related. The married women working in service occupation and earn salaries work longer hours than those employed as laborer and wage workers. Having older parents and owning the second home reduce working hours of married women.

The purpose of our study is to explore dynamic mechanisms within families and self-authored decisions among Korean female college students. In particular, we investigated how parent-child interactions influence the development of self-authorship and self-authored decisions within Korean culture through interviews with 14 female college students. Results showed unique cultural influences on how female college students interacted with parents and interpreted and reflected parents' opinions in their self-authored decisions. These results suggest further research on gender differences and complex family influences on self-authored decisions within cultural contexts.
This study examined the relationships between parenting styles, academic achievement, and behavioral adjustment of adolescents in Korea. Using a sample of 181 parents and their children (13-15 years old), parents completed the Parental Authority Questionnaire and adolescents filled out the Youth Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and provided their school grades. Factor analysis was conducted on the PAQ to confirm the psychometric properties. Hierarchical regression analysis was computed to determine the relationship between maternal and paternal parenting styles, academic performance, and children's internalizing and externalizing behaviors. Regression analysis revealed that mother's authoritative parenting style was positively related with adolescents' grades in English. However, father's permissive was negatively related with adolescents' grades in English, Mathematics, and Science. Mother's permissive parenting styles showed negative effects of internalizing and externalizing behavior problems whereas father's permissive parenting styles showed positive effects of internalizing and externalizing behavior problems.
