High-stress and complex geological conditions impose great challenges to maintain excavation stability during deep underground mining. In this research, large anisotropic deformation and its management by support system at a deep underground mine in Western Australia were simulated through three-dimensional finite-difference model. The ubiquitous-joint model was used and calibrated in FLAC3D to reproduce the deformation and failure characteristics of the excavation based on the field monitoring results. After modeling verification, the roles of mining depth also the intercept angle between excavation axis and foliation orientation on the deformation and damage were studied. Based on the results, quantitative relationships between key factors and damage classifications were presented, which can be used as an engineering tool. Subsequently, the performance of support system installation sequences was simulated and compared at four different scenarios. The results show that, first surface support and then reinforcement installation can obtain a better controlling effect. Finally, the influence of bolt spacing and ring spacing were also discussed. The outcomes obtained in this research may play a meaningful reference for facing the challenges in thin-bedded or foliated ground conditions.
This study analyzes the importance-performance analysis (IPA) of the 10 dimensions of the smart construction safety management system, and analyzes which dimensions are important and which dimensions are performing to determine key improvement tasks, incremental improvement tasks, Maintenance and reinforcement tasks and continuous maintenance tasks were derived. Among the 10 dimensions of the smart construction safety management system, the dimensions that are recognized as important by all field managers and field workers and have high performance are the automatic risk displacement measurement system, smart environmental sensor system, and heavy equipment seizure prevention system. However, areas that were perceived as having high importance but low performance were worker location tracking systems, smart safety helmet chin muscles, and smart safety ring fastening. Among the smart construction safety management systems perceived by field managers, areas for key improvement with high importance and low performance included worker location tracking system and smart safety ring fastening. Among the smart construction safety management systems perceived by field workers, the area for key improvement with high importance and low performance was the automatic risk displacement measurement system.

In order to reuse existing onshore turbine foundations, it is important to redesign and reinforce the existing foundations according to the upgraded tower diameter and turbine load. In the present study, a slab extension reinforcement method and structure details of an anchorage part were examined in consideration of the reuse of spread footings, which are the most widely used foundation type in onshore wind turbine foundations. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the load resistance performance of a reinforced spread footing according to structure details of an anchorage part. The results showed that (1) the strength of an anchorage part could be increased by more than 30 % by adding reinforcement bars in the anchorage part, (2) pile-sleeves attached to an anchor ring contributed to an increase in rotational stiffness by preventing shear slip behavior between the anchor ring and the concrete, and (3) slab connectors contributed to an increase in the strength and deformation capacity by preventing the separation of new and old concrete slabs.

This paper aims to evaluating the interlayer strength of 3D-printed concrete with interlayer reinforcement. According to lap splices, two reinforcement methods were considered. One method did not include lap splices of interlayer reinforcement, but the other method included lap splices with length of 40mm. In addition, two different curing conditions were applied: air curing conditions and water curing conditions. The compressive, splitting tensile, and flexural tensile strengths of 3D-printed concrete specimens were measured in three loading directions with different reinforcement methods and curing conditions. Splitting and flexural tensile strengths decreased considerably when tensile stresses acted over the interlayers of 3D-printed concrete specimens. However, the flexural tensile strength or interlayer bonding strength of the printed specimens increased significantly at the interlayers when the longitudinal interlayer reinforcement penetrated printed layers. Interlayer bonding strength of printed concrete decreased after air curing treatment was applied because interlayers of printed concrete with more pores formed by the air cu ring conditions are more vulnerable to the load.
In this study, the effects of ring stiffeners for buckling of cylindrical shells with composite materials were analyzed. The finite element method was used: 3-D beam elements were used for stiffeners and flat shell elements were used for cylindrical shells and were improved by introducing a substitute shear strain. The ring stiffeners were of the transverse rib type. The buckling behaviors of the cylindrical shells were analyzed based on various parameters, such as locations and sizes of stiffeners, diameter/length ratios and boundary conditions of shells, and fiber-reinforced angles. Effective reinforcement was examined by understanding the exact behaviors for buckling. The results of the analysis may serve as references for designs and future investigations.
This study analyzed ground settlement and ground stress depending on tunnel excavation and the ground reinforcing grouting methods for double line road tunnel through deep weathered zone. Diameter of double line road tunnel was approximately 12m and umbrella arch method and side wall reinforcing grouting were applied. The ring-cut split excavation method and CD-cut excavation method for excavation method were applied. Analyses of failure rate and vertical stress ratio show that the tunnel for which the height of the cover (H) was higher than four times the diameter, can be considered a deep tunnel. Comparisons of various excavation and ground reinforcement methods showed that CD-cut method results in lower surface and crown settlement, and lower failure rate than that obtained by Ring-cut split method. In addition, the side wall reinforcing grouting resulted in reduction of tunnel displacement and settlement.

If there are concerns about the stability of segment lining due to section deficiency or large deformation in shield TBM tunnel, reinforcement can be done through ground grouting outside the tunnel or by using steel plate reinforcement, ring beam reinforcement, or inner double layer lining inside the tunnel. Traditional analyses of shield TBM tunnels have been conducted using a continuum method that does not consider the segmented nature of segment lining. This study investigates the reinforcement mechanism for double layer reinforced sections with internal steel linings. By improving the modeling of segment lining, this study applies Break-joint mode (BJM), which considers the segmented characteristics of segment lining, to analyze the deformation characteristics of double layer reinforced sections. The results indicate that the existing concrete segment lining functioned similarly to ground reinforcement around the tunnel, rather than distribution the load. In general, both the BJM model considering the segmentation of segment lining and the continuum rigid method were similar deformation shapes and stress distributions of the lining under load. However, in terms of deformation, when the load strength exceeded the threshold, the deformation patterns of the two models differed.

In this work, effects of carbon matrix on sliding friction and wear behavior of four kinds of C/C have been investigated against 40 Cr steel ring mate. Composite A with rough lamination carbon matrix (RL) shows the highest volume loss and coefficient of friction, while composite D with smooth lamination/resin carbon matrix (SL/RC) shows the lowest volume loss. The worn surface of composite A appears smooth, whereas that of composite C with smooth lamination carbon (SL) appears rough. The worn surface of composite D appears smooth under low load but rough under high load. Atomic force microscope images show that the size of wear particles on the worn surface is also dependent on the carbon matrix.
The energy storage systems are being widely researched for the electric power. The operations running in a vacuum chamber mainly consists of a composite flywheel rotor, superconductor bearings, a motor/generator and its controller. Among composed the apparatus, the floating magnet bearing consists of the ring-type permanent magnets with epoxy resin impregnation for reinforcement and surface protection. In order to storage as much energy as possible, the flywheel is supposed to be rotated with very high speed. The magnetic field is analyzed by using the Maxwell 2D/3D for the simulations.

Back ferrule is a circular ring shaped metallic object which is used for fastening, joining or reinforcement during the tube fitting as well as to prevent leakage. Therefore, during tube fitting the leading edge of the back ferrule should be sufficiently hard enough to prevent leakage. In our research, we concentrated the improvement of two major factors. Firstly, to improve the surface hardness of the back ferrule made by AISI 316 Stainless Steel. Secondly, the enhancement of corrosion resistance of back ferrule after plasma treatment. Initially, the corrosion resistance and hardness of the back ferrule (both commercial and without treated) was not good enough for tube fitting but after applying plasma treatment with suitable conditions on ferrule, we improved the corrosion resistance and hardness of the back ferrule dramatically.
