  • When stress is beyond elastic limit or cracks occur in a reinforced concrete member subjected to axial force and biaxial bending, curvature about each principal axis of uncracked section is influenced by axial force and bending moments about both major and minor principal axes. It is mainly due to the translation and rotation of principal axes of the cross section after cracking. Recently, by considering these effects, a numerical method predicting the behavior of concrete columns subjected to axial force and biaxial bending was proposed. In this study, in order to verify the proposed numerical method and investigate the effects of cracking on the behavior of reinforced concrete columns, a series of tests were carried out for 16 tied reinforced concrete columns with 100×100 mm square and 200×100 mm rectangular sections under various loading conditions. The angle between the direction of eccentricity and the major principal axis of uncracked section were 0, 30, 40° for the square section and 0, 30, 45, 60, 90° for the rectangular section, respectively. A comparison between numerical predictions and test results shows good agreements in ultimate loads, axial force-lateral deflection relations, and lateral deflection trajectories. It is also found, in this limited investigation, that the ACI's moment magnifier method is conservative in both uniaxial and biaxial loading conditions.

  • Direct tensile tests were carried out for the tensile members of steel-reinforced polymer concrete with different steel diameters and steel ratios to figure out the effect of tensile strength of polymer concrete. In the experiments, polymer concrete with $1000kgf/cm^2$ of compressive strength, steel with $5200kgf/cm^2$ of tensile strength, and the tensile members with 100 cm of constant length were used. Experimental results showed that, regardless of steel diameters and steel content, the strain energy exerted by concrete till the initial crack was 14-15% of the total energy till the point of yield: The energy was much larger than the one of high-strength cement concrete. The behaviors of tensile members of steel-reinforced polymer concrete were in relatively good agreement with the model suggested by Gupta-Maestrini (1990), which was idealized by the effective tensile stress-strain relationship of concrete and the load-strain relationship of members, while those showed a big difference from CEB-FIP model and ACI-224 equation suggested for the load-displacement relationship that was defined as the cross sectional stiffness of effective axis. Modified ACI-224 model code about the load-displacement relationship for the tensile members of steel-reinforced polymer concrete and theoretical equation for the polymer concrete tensile stiffness of polymer concrete suggested through the results of this study are expected to be used in an accurate structural analysis and design for the polymer concrete structural members.

  • The flexural behavior of Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) sheets has gained much research interest in the flexural strengthening of reinforced concrete beams. The study on flexure includes various parameters like increase in strength of the member due to the externally bonded (EB) Fiber reinforced polymer, crack patterns, debonding of the fiber from the structure, scaling, convenience of using the fibers, cost effectiveness, etc. The present work aims to study experimentally about the reasons behind the failure due to flexure of an externally bonded FRP concrete beam. In the design of FRP-reinforced concrete structures, deflection control is as critical as much as flexural strength. A numerical model is created using Finite element (FEM) software and the results are compared with that of the experiment.

  • Longitudinal elongation develops in reinforced concrete beams that exhibit flexural yielding during cyclic loading. The longitudinal elongation can decrease the shear strength and deformation capacity of the beams. In the present study, nonlinear truss model analysis was performed to study the elongation mechanism of reinforced concrete beams. The results showed that residual tensile plastic strain of the longitudinal reinforcing bar in the plastic hinge is the primary factor causing the member elongation, and that the shear-force transfer mechanism of diagonal concrete struts has a substantial effect on the magnitude of the elongation. Based on the analysis results, a simplified method for evaluating member elongation was developed. The proposed method was applied to test specimens with various design parameters and loading conditions.

  • This paper presents an analytical prediction of the elastic behavior of discontinuous displacement in reinforced concrete column-footing joint under earthquake. Material nonlinearity is taken into account by comprising tensile, compressive and shear models of cracked concrete and a model of reinforcing steel. The smeared crack approach is incorporated. In boundary plane at which each member with different thickness is connected, local discontinuous deformation due to the abrupt change in their stiffness can be taken into account by introducing interface element. The proposed numerical method for hysteretic behavior of discontinuous displacement in reinforced concrete column-footing joint will be verified by comparison with reliable experimental results.

  • Recently, with the increase in the construction of ultra-high buildings and long-span structures, there is great demand for high-strength concrete which can reduce the structural weight and thickness of member sections. While developing high-strength concrete to meet performance requirements, certain issues at the design stage must also be considered. The issues include diseconomy from a great amount of per-unit cement, spalling failure by fire at ultra-high building, autogenous shrinkage caused by increased hydration activity of binder from use of a superplasticizer. Therefore, the purpose of this study is examined the strain characteristics of Fiber-reinforced-high-strength concrete(FRHSC), which differ from those of general concrete owing to autogenous shrinkage. Based on the experimental data, we proposed an autogenous shrinkage prediction model.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the reliability index of a design by applying the reduction factor of the recently developed fiber reinforced high strength concrete design guideline(draft). By collecting material and member test data performed for the development of the design guideline(draft), statistical characteristics of material strength and member strength analysis equations are obtained. A simul ation that appl ies the material statistical characteristics and the member anal ysis equation of the design guidel ine(draft) is performed, and the statistical characteristics of the section strength are calculated by combining the statistical characteristics of the analysis equation. Reliability analysis was performed by applying the load combination of the domestic highway bridge design code and concrete structural code, and it was confirmed that the design that applies the reduction factor for materials and members suggested in the design guideline(draft) satisfies the target reliability index.

  • The FRP-concrete composite deck system has advantages of corrosion free and easy construction. The system is, however, comprised of two brittle materials, so that it suffers from inherent disadvantage of lack of ductility. In this study, some conceptual design is presented for preventing the brittle failure of FRP-concrete composite deck at ultimate load level. 4-point bending tests are performed for FRP-concrete composite beams using FRC(Fiber Reinforced Concrete). The specimens use the box-shape FRP member in the lower portion. Four types of concrete with different compressive strengths and ductilities including normal mortar and 3 FRCs are placed in the upper portion. Typical failure mode in the test is identified; Concrete compressive failure occurs first at the maximum moment region, and the interfacial debonding between FRP and concrete member proceeds. Finally, the tensile rupture of FRP member occurs. The specimen using FRC with the high compressive ductility of concrete fails with less brittle manner than other specimens. The reason is that the ductility from the concrete in compression prevents the sudden loss of load-carrying capacity after compressive concrete failure.

  • CFT structure has many advantages compared with the ordinary structural member made of steel or reinforced concrete. Because of increases in ductility, stiffness and load carrying capacity of overall structure owing to confinement effect of steel box and concrete, CFT structure is widely used to columns. Recently, the utilization of CFT member has been expanded to bridge structure as a girder member. The purpose of this study is to develop the analytical model and propose design method for CFTA girder bridge consisting of CFT structure, arch shape and tendons.

  • This paper presents an experimental work to study the flexural strength of reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened by partially de-bonded near surface-mounted (NSM) fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) strip with various de-bonded length. Especially, considering high anchorage capacity at end of a FRP strip, the effect of de-bonded region at a central part was investigated. In order to check the improvement of strength or deformation capacity when the bonded surface area only increased without changing the FRP area, single and triple lines of FRP were planned. In addition, the flexural strength of the RC member strengthened by a partially de-bonded NSM FRP strip was evaluated by using the existing researchers' strength equation to predict the flexural strength after retrofit. From the study, it was found that where de-bonded region exists in the central part of a flexural member, the deformation capacity of the member is expected to be improved, because FRP strain is not to be concentrated on the center but to be extended uniformly in the de-bonded region. Where NSM FRP strips are distributed in triple lines, a relatively high strength can be exerted due to the increase of bond strength in the anchorage.
