  • Objective: We evaluated the efficacy of a newly-developed spinal orthoses (V-LSO) by comparing the stabilizing effect, abdominal pressure, and comfort of 3 different semirigid LSOs (classic LSO, V-LSO, and Cybertech®) during various body movements. Method: Thirty healthy volunteers (23~47 years, 24 males, 6 females) were selected. A dual inclinometer measured the range of motion (ROM) while the participants performed flexion/extension and lateral flexion of the lumbar spine with 3 LSOs. The LSO's pressure on the abdominal surface was measured using 9 pressure sensors while lying, sitting, standing, flexion/extension, lateral flexion, axial rotation, and lifting a box. Comfort and subjective immobilization were analyzed by a questionnaire. Results: V-LSO had a statistically significant effect on flexion over Cybertech®. No significant differences were noted during extension and lateral flexion between the 3 LSOs. The abdominal pressure showed no significant differences while supine. While sitting, standing, and lifting a box, the mean abdominal pressure for V-LSO were significantly higher than those for Cybertech®. During lumbar flexion, the mean abdominal pressures for classic LSO and V-LSO were significantly higher than that of Cybertech®. For extension, lateral flexion and axial rotation, the abdominal pressure for V-LSO was significantly higher than those of classic LSO and Cybertech®. In the subjective analysis, V-LSO and Cybertech® scored best for comfort. Conclusion: The V-LSO and Cybertech® were more comfortable than the classic LSO, and hence, may have improved compliance with decreased discomfort. V-LSO may be superior to the other LSOs in restricting lumbar movement and increasing intraabdominal pressure.

Methods: Data were collected from June 1th to July 31th, 2019 and structured questionnaires were used. Study subjects were 97 orthopedic patients who received fixed treatment more than two weeks and started rehabilitation exercise in a military hospital. The data were summarized using descriptive statistics and analyzed by t-test or one way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were run in SPSS 20.0 program. Results: The results of this study may be summarized as follows. (1) The demographic characteristics that showed differences in rehabilitation motivation were marital status, age and the ranks of the armed forces. The rehabilitation motivation of married, older than 31, officer ranked soldiers turned out to be higher than those of singles, younger than 30, non-officers, respectively. (2) The results of Pearson's correlation analysis showed that independent variables were all correlated significantly each other. (3) The results of stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that the factors influencing rehabilitation motivation were family social support, medical personnel's social support and the level of military life adaption. Conclusions: The rehabilitation motivation of hospitalized soldiers may be improved by receiving supports from family members and medical personnels and by adapting to military life. Military medical workers need to explore nursing strategies that help hospitalized orthopedic patients increase their own rehabilitation motivation.

  • The purpose of this study is to introduce prosthetic discipline and ambulation training after hemipelvectomy due to osteosarcoma. Over the past years, when the malignant bone tumors occurs in the extremities amputation is not enough to prevent a part recurrence and distal transformation resulting in fatal prognosis. On the other hand, these procedures could bring about a difficulty in rehabilitation in curing patient who have had hemipelvectomy. However the recent development of chemotherapy and diagnostic facility have permitted the orthopedic surgeons to many try amputations for the treatment of the malignant bone tumors. Unfortunately, there has not been many researches on hemipelvectomy. Since there is no studies found on hemipelvectomy either. Therefore, we introduce successful procedures for rehabilitation through the ambulation training for patients who have had amputation. One of our patients, who is an eighteen years old male, has had hemipelvectomy on the eighteenth of June in 1997 after his anticancer treatment over 12 times. He has had physical therapy of prosthetic ambulation training at the department of rehabilitation medicine Yonsei University Medical Center from the fifteenth of October to December '2nd in 1997.

  • A 38-year-old Korean man without any other history was diagnosed with myelopathy due to a spinal dural arteriovenous fistula. Following embolization and high-dose steroid therapy, the patient was treated with complex Korean medical therapies including acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, electro-acupuncture, Chuna manual therapy, herbal medicine, and cupping therapy in addition to conventional treatment. To assess the patient's improvement, international standard for neurological classification of spinal cord injury, Korean version of modified Barthel index, functional independence measure, spinal cord independence measure III, walking index for spinal cord injury II, modified Ashworth scale were used. After treatment, the muscle strength and sensory function of the lower extremities were improved, and the spasticity was reduced, resulting in a rapid improvement in performance of daily activities. These results suggest that complex Korean medical therapies may be effective for myelopathy, and further clinical studies are needed to clarify their effects.

  • This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of Korean rehabilitation treatement for patients with post-TKR. The medical records of inpatients undergoing Korean rehabilitation treatment after TKR from 2016.01.01. to 2021.12.31. during the admission, were analyzed retrospectively. The effect of treatment was evaluated by using a numeric rating scale(NRS) and range of motion(ROM) of knee. Statistical analysis was done using the IBM SPSS statistics 26 program. If the period of hospitalization was within 7 days or change of NRS and ROM was not recorded properly, the case was excluded. All inpatients received acupuncture treatment, Electro-acupuncture. Soyeom pharmaco-acupuncture were used at a high rate. Blood letting cupping therapy, dry cupping therapy, Interferential Current Therapy(ICT) continuous passive motion(CPM), cryotherapy were used at a high rate. A significant improvement was noted when comparing the NRS and knee ROM results at the time of admission and discharge. Korean medical rehabilitation can be effectively used for patients who have undergone TKR, to relieve pain and enable returning to daily activities. It is expected to be helpful in future studies of post-TKR in Korean Medicine. Also It can be used for medical treatment of post-TKR in Korean Medicine Hospital and clinic. However, further research with a high level of evidence is necessary to support this finding.
