Core stability exercises for patients with hemiplegia have become increasingly important and a variety of exercises have been developed over the years to give the hemiplegic patients more stable postural control. This study examined the therapeutic effects of the core stability exercises on the ability of static and dynamic postural control. Fifteen hemiplegic patients (7 males, 8 females, age ranging from 46 to 76 years) hospitalized in a Daejoen rehabilitation hospital were enrolled in this study. Nine and 6 patients had a cerebral infarction and cerebral hemorrhage, respectively. The subjects participated in a core stability exercise program consisting of a total of 12 sessions 3 times each week over a 4-week period with each exercise lasting approximately 15 minutes. The ability of static and dynamic postural control by Berg Balance Scale (BBS) and Timed Up and Go (TUG), respectively, were measured before and after the core stability exercise. A Wilcoxon signed ranks test was used to compare the effects of the ability of static and dynamic postural control before and after core stability exercise in patients with hemiplegia. The ${\alpha}$=.05 level of significance was used for the statistical tests. Core stability exercises were effective in improving the ability of static postural control; BBS (p<.05). Core stability exercises were also effective in improving the ability of dynamic postural control; TUG (p<.05). Overall, core stability exercise is believed to be an important therapeutic method in rehabilitation programs for hemiplegic patients.
Purpose : The aim of this study was to determine the effect of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation(PNF) on balance ability in poststroke hemiparetic subjects. Methods : The subjects of this study were 12 patients with hemiplegia who volunteered to participate in the experiment which was carried out over the course of 4 weeks. The Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation is applied to group with three positions (sidelying, half-standing, modified plantigrade). The tests between before and after the intervention were measured by FSST (Four Square Step Test), FICSIT-4 (Frailty and Injuries: Cooperative Studies of Intervention Techniques), BBS(Berg Balance Scale). The data were analyzed using paired t-test and Wilcoxon signed rank test to determine the statistical significance. Results : The results of this study were summarized as follows: 1. After intervention, the score of BBS and FICSIT-4 significantly were increased compared with before intervention. 2. After intervention, the time of FSST were reduced significantly compared with before intervention. Conclusions : According to above results, Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation improved with balance ability of patients with hemiplegia. This study provided basic data for effects Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation on balance ability. In conclusion, Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation with other interventions is effective way to improve balance ability of patients with hemiplegia.

Purpose : This study examined the effects of driving rehabilitation functional training on visual perception ability and driving reaction velocity. Those subjects were put under MVPT-3 test to see their visual perceptual functions before and after the 4weeks' driving rehabilitation function training and then put to TMT A-type test to see their driving reaction velocity performance. The followings are the results of this study. Methods : Using a driving simulator, driving rehabilitation functional training was performed targeting men and women aged in 20s 20 minutes per time, two times per week, for a month. Results : As for the change in visual perception, the Raw Score of MVPT-3 very significantly increased (p<.01), and the Standard Score also very significantly increased (p<.01). As for the change in reaction velocity, TMT A-type very significantly decreased (p<.01), and TMT B-type also very significantly decreased (p<.01). Conclusion : It could be found that driving rehabilitation functional training should be effective for both visual perception and reaction velocity. Consequently, the driving rehabilitation function training can be applied to clinics as training method for functional recovery and improvement of visual perceptual functions and driving reaction velocity performance ability of the patients. Thus, various functional programs should be studied in the future.

This research tries to find out the methods to enhance the rehabilitation ability of Cerebro Vascular Accident(CVA) patients and their family members. For this purpose, the authors identify the factors that may affect the medical rehabilitation process as well as the rehabilitation itself. Furthermore, the current status of the rehabilitation ability and the desires of CVA patients and their family members are surveyed in this research. The results of this research are as follows: Firstly, the surveyed CVA patients, most of whom are over fifties in the age, have cerebral infection and hemorrhage in a numerical order. The survey showed that the larger cities they live in, the more CVA occur to them. Secondly, the survey for the treatment cost demonstrated that the lower are their living level and their education level, the more pressure is put on the CVA patients and their family. The statistical data proved this conclusion is reasonable. Thirdly, as for the safisfaction for the rehabilitation treatment, the statistical survey showed that it is directly proportional to their financial income. Moreover, those who have lower income generally want the rehabilitation services from a public health center. On the other hand, those who have higher income want the home therapy services.
Objective: This study analyzes the effect of angle conditions of rehabilitation equipment used for supporting hemiplegic patients on their rehabilitation training for standing action. The study was performed by adjusting the rear angle of seat inclination through a motion analysis. Background: Owing to a loss of muscle rigidity and degradation of muscle control ability, hemiplegic stroke patients suffer from asymmetrical posture, abnormal body balance, and degraded balance abilities due to poor weight-shifting capacity. The ability to shift and maintain one's weight is extremely essential for mobility, which plays an important role in our daily life. Thus, to improve patients' ability to maintain weight evenly and move normally, they need to undergo orthostatic and ambulatory training. Method: Using a motion analysis system, knee movements on both hemiplegic side and non-hemiplegic side were measured and analyzed in five angles ($0^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$, $50^{\circ}$, $70^{\circ}$) while supported by the sit-to-stand rehabilitation equipment. Results: The knee movements on both sides increased as the angle increased in angle support interval to support a hemiplegic patient's standing up position. In standing up interval, a hemiplegic patient's knee movement deviations on both sides decreased, and the movement differences between hemiplegic and non-hemiplegic legs also decreased as the angle increased. Conclusion: The results of this study showed that the rehabilitation effectiveness increases as the angle increases, leading to a balanced standing posture through the decrease of movement difference between hemiplegic and non-hemiplegic sides and an improved standing up ability through the increase of knee movement on both sides. However, angles higher than $50^{\circ}$ didn't provide a significant effect. Therefore, a support angle under $50^{\circ}$ was proposed in this study. Application: The results of this study are expected to be applicable to the design of sit-to-stand support equipment to improve the effectiveness of the rehabilitation process of hemiplegic patients.
Purpose: Gait and cognitive impairment in stroke patients exacerbate fall risk and mobility difficulties during multi-task walking. Virtual reality can provide interesting and challenging training in a community setting. This study evaluated the effect of community-based virtual reality gait training (VRGT) using a 360-degree image on the gait ability of chronic stroke patients. Methods: Forty-five chronic stroke patients who were admitted to a rehabilitation hospital participated in this study. Patients meeting the selection criteria were randomly divided into a VRGT group (n=23) and a control group (n=22). Both these groups received general rehabilitation. The VRGT group was evaluated using a 360-degree image that was recorded for 50 minutes a day, 5 days per week for a total of 6 weeks after their training. The control group received general treadmill training for the same amount of time as that of the VRGT group. The improvement in the spatiotemporal parameters of gait was evaluated using a gait analyzer system before and after training. Results: The spatiotemporal gait parameters showed significant improvements in both groups compare with the baseline measurements (p<0.05), and the VRGT group showed more improvement than the control group (p<0.05). Conclusion: Community-based VRGT has been shown to improve the walking ability of chronic stroke patients and is expected to be used in rehabilitation of stroke patients in the future.
The purposes of this study were to determine wether knee muscular fatigue affects on one-leg static standing balance. Sixty four healthy subjects were used for this study : 44 men and 20 women, with an average age of 19.52. One leg static standing balance was measured at pre-fatigue and post-fatigue by an instrumented balance assessment system(kinesthetic ability training balance platform) which is commercially available for testing or training balance. Isokinetic exercises were used to evoke muscle fatigue at 180 degree/see by Cybex 1200. One leg static standing balance ability was significantly decreased after knee muscular fatigue. Although these phenomenons were not clearly understood, these results have important implications for rehabilitation in fatigable patients. These results suggest that the excessive fatiguing during rehabilitation in patients with fatigable disease may increase risk of reinjury and falling injury due to balance disturbance. Further studies are required to determine the physiological mechanisms of muscle fatigue that can play in decreasing one-leg static standing balance ability.

The ability to maintain an upright position during quiet standing is a useful motor skill. The Sensory Organization Test (SOT) is a timed balance test that evaluates somatosensory, visual, and vestibular function for maintenance of upright posture. The Fugl-Meyer Sensorimotor Assessment (FMSA) balance subscale is the functional status assessment that indicates amount of assistance needed during various balance tasks. Functional Independence Measure (FIM) is the functional status assessment tool and FIM can be used clinically as an outcome measure. The purpose of this study was to see if the SOT can be used as a evaluation tool to measure hemiplegic patients' balance ability. Thirty-six patients with hemiplegia participated in this study. SOT scores were significantly correlated with FMSA balance scores and FIM scores(p<0.05). However correlation coefficients were not so high (r=0.60, and r=0.51, respectively). Therefore, further study is needed to verify the SOT's usefulness when physical therapists are evaluating for hemiplegic patients' balance ability.

PURPOSE: This study examined the effects of observing a self-video or a video of another person performing balance and gait training, followed by actual performance of the observed movements on the balance and walking ability of chronic stroke patients. METHODS: Thirty patients, who had experienced a stroke and were admitted to S rehabilitation hospital for treatment, were selected randomly and divided into three groups with 10 patients each: self-action observation (SAO) group, other-action observation (OAO) group, and treadmill walking training (TWT) group. The training program was conducted five times per week for four weeks. The GAITRite system, 10 m walking test, and timed up and go test were performed to measure the subjects' gait and balance ability. RESULTS: The velocity, cadence, double support, and stride length were increased significantly in the SAO and OAO groups (p<.05) but the T group showed no significant changes; no significant difference was observed among the groups (p >.05). The 10MWT decreased significantly in the OAO group (p<.05), but there were no significant changes in the SAO and T groups, and no significant difference was observed among the groups (p>.05). The TUG decreased significantly in the SAO and OAO groups (p<.05), but there were no significant changes in the T group, and no significant difference was observed among the groups (p>.05). CONCLUSION: The self or other action observation training helps improve the balance and gait ability.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of coordinative locomotor training(CLT) using elastic bands on dynamic balance and grip strength for Elementary school baseball players and to provide correct posture guidance and reference on the prevention and rehabilitation program of sports damage and injury in the future. Design: Two groups pre-post randomized controlled design. Methods: Forty-six subjects were randomly divided in two groups;1) CLT using Elastic Band group(Experimental group, n=23), 2) Routine baseball training group(Control group, n=23). The intervention was conducted total 16 times for sixty minutes a day, 2 times a week, for 8 weeks. Evaluations of dynamic balance ability and grip strength were performed with all subjects before the commencement of training and 8 weeks after training. Results: Compared to the control group after training, the dynamic balance ability and dominant handgrip strength of the experimental group were significantly more improved(p<0.05). Conclusions: We confirmed that the effects of CLT using elastic bands on dynamic balance ability and grip strength in Elementary school baseball player. This study should be used for improving the quality of the Elementary school baseball player's training and would be contributed prevention and rehabilitation program of sports damage and injury.
