  • The linear and cross-sectional shapes of the natural river channel are subjected to continuous changes in time and space due to the interaction with the flow of water and sediment transport. This study aims to investigate the morphological characteristics and change patterns of river channel quantitatively for the middle reach of Nakdong River, which has undergone large scale riverbed dredging and construction work, as Four Major River Restoration Project. A series of bathymetry and near-river survey has been conducted to obtain the detailed terrain information for the study area. The properties related to the linear and cross-sectional characteristics of river channel have been calculated based on the filed survey data and analyzed with comparing the survey data obtained in 2012 for the project completion. Since there has not been enough time for meaningful terrain change to take place, it was not possible to extract special tendency in the degree and aspect of terrain change. However, it is necessary to make regular examinations to the patterns and degree of river channel change using the proposed methodology.

  • To develop the detailing methods at the ends of flexural shear walls. which are satisfying the ductility requirement corresponding to R = 3.5 and capable of improving the consturctibility, tests of ten isolated cantilever shear walls were carried out under the load condition comprising the cyclic lateral and constant vertical loads. major test parameters include the way of detailing and arrangement of transverse reinforcement in the boundary elements at the ends of walls, and placement of vertical reinforcement. From tests, comparable ductile behavior in test specimens incorporating the channel type of open hoops, compared with those incorporating the regular type of closed hoops, was observed.

  • Considerable interest has evolved in the flow of non-Newtonian fluids in channels of noncircular cross section in compact heat exchanges. Analytical solution was developed for prediction of the flow rate and maximum velocity in steady laminar flow of any incompressible, time-independent non-Newtonian fluids in straight closed and open channels of arbitrary, but axially unchanging cross section. The geometric parameters and function of shear describing the behavior of the fluid model were evaluated for fluid flow among a bundle of rods arranged in triangular and square array. Numerical values of dimensionless maximum velocities, mean velocities, pressure-drop-flow parameters and friction factors were evaluated as a function of porosity and pitch-to-radius ratio.

  • Recently, in recognition of their outstanding structural performance, the use of Concrete Filled Steel Tube (CFT) columns has been increased. New shape welded built-up square tube was developed by the authors for broader usability using thin steel plates which were bent to be L-shaped (Channel) and each unit members were welded to form square steel tube as an cost-efficient use of expensive steel. In addition, since the rib placed at the center of the tube width acts as an anchor; higher load capacity of buckling is achievable. In order to apply the new shape built-up square columns, the structural behavior and stress distribution with parameter width of thickness (b/t), with and without rib were predicted. The New shape welded built-up square tube effectively delayed the local buckling of the steel tube, which led to a greater strength and ductility than regular HSS.

  • The cross-shore sediment transport in a coastal region causes the important changes in beach morphological properties. The accurate estimation of the cross-shore sediment transport is important for the designing of the marine structures such as seawalls, jetties, breakwaters etc, and the preventing coastal erosion and accretion due to on-off shore sediment transportation. In this study, the experiments on cross- shore sediment transport carried out in a laboratory wave channel for initial beach slopes of 1/8, 1/10 and 1/15. Using the regular waves with different deep-water wave steepness generated by a pedal-type wave generator, the geometrical characteristics of beach profiles under storm conditions and the parameters affecting on-off shore sediment transport are investigated for the beach materials having medium diameters of $d_{50}$=0.25, 0.32, 0.45, 0.62 and 0.80 mm. The experimental results obtained from this study compared with previous experimental work and found to be of the same magnitude as the experimental measurements and followed the expected basic trend.

  • The prediction for gaseous leak flows through a narrow crack is important for a leak-before-break (LBB) analysis. Therefore, the methodology to obtain the flow characteristics of gaseous leak flow in a narrow crack for the wide range by using the product of friction factor and Reynolds number correlations (fRe) for a micro-channel is developed and presented. The correlation applied here was proposed by the previous study. The fourth-order Runge-Kutta method was employed to integrate the nonlinear ordinary differential equation for the pressure and the regular-Falsi method was also employed to find the inlet Mach number. A narrow crack whose opening displacement ranges from 10 to $100{\mu}m$ with a crack length in the range from 2 to 200mm was chosen for sample prediction. The present results are compared with both numerical simulation results and available experimental measurements. The results are in excellent agreement with them. The leak flow rate can be approximately predicted by using proposed methodology.

  • In this paper, were introduce two types of equalizers, called equalizer-a and equalizer-b, applying to wireless communications having unknown channel characteristics. The equalizer-a, which has the single sample detector with equalizer system, is developed while the equalizer-b has the partition detectors with the same system used in equalizer-a. The methodologiy we adopt for designing the equalizers is that the sample space is partitioned into finite number of regions by using quantiles, which are estimated by robbins-monro stochastic approximation (RMSA) algorithm, and the coefficients of equalizers are calculated based on nonlinear minimum mean, square error (MMSE) algorithm. Through the computer simulation, the equalizers show much better performance in equiprobably partitioned sample subspaces of observations than the single sample detector and the detector, which has the conventional equalizer, in unquantized observation space under various noise environments.

  • In this paper, flow characteristics of plasma flow in a micro-tube were investigated experimentally using micro particle image velocimetry(micro-PIV). For comparison, the experiments were repeated for deionized(DI) wale. instead of plasma. Both velocity profiles of plasma and do-ionized water are well agreed with the theoretical velocity distribution of newtonian fluid. We also carried out generating plasma-in-oil droplet formation at a Y-junction microchannel. In order to clarify the hydrodynamic aspects involved in plasma droplet formation, Rhodamine-B were mixed with plasma only for visualization of plasma droplet. With oil as the continuous phase and plasma as the dispersed phase, plasma droplet can be generated in a continuous phase flow at a Y-junction. For given experimental parameters, regular-sized droplets are reproducibly formed at a uniform flow conditions.

  • Cognitive Radio (CR) users need to sense the environment or channel at regular time interval for sharing the spectrum band of the primary users (PUs). Once find the spectrum idle, CR users start their transmission through it. Even while transmitting, they need to continue the sensing process so that they can leave the spectrum immediately whenever find a PU wanting to use the band. Therefore, detecting PUs is one of the main functions of cognitive radio before transmission and higher the detection probability ensures better protection to the primary users. However, it is not possible to attain a high detection probability (or a low miss detection probability) and low false alarm probability simultaneously as there is a tradeoff between false alarm probability ($P_{fa}$) and the probability of detection ($P_d$). In this paper, the author has provided a comprehensive study on different sensing techniques and discussed their advantages and disadvantages. Moreover, it is expected that, with this article, readers can have a through understanding of sensing techniques in CR and the current research trends in this area.
