Southeast Asia in International History: Justification and Exploration

  • Despite its centrality at a pivotal crossroads of both land and sea of East-West trade, communications and travel, the region now known as Southeast Asia provides very few scholarly works situating or featuring it in an international context. Because of this paucity, there is immense scope for exploration. But prior to further explorations, justification is needed to establish that Southeast Asia, as a region, is a subject of interest, relevance, and significance in a global context. Southeast Asia was home to several empires whose reach transcended the region and beyond. Southeast Asia in, and as part of international history as an area of study is therefore justifiable. Moreover, other factors come into play, viz. geography, resources, migration, diffusion of ideas and beliefs from without and accommodation from within, shared experience of imperialism and colonialism, decolonization, and the Cold War, and the collective fate under the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), that further bolster its rationalization as a component of international history. Explorations, on the other hand, examine issues and obstacles that contribute to the paucity of works on Southeast Asia in international history. Furthermore, in contextualizing Southeast Asia in international history, there might appear challenges that need to be identified, confronted, and resolved.

Improving Matching Performance of SURF Using Color and Relative Position (위치와 색상 정보를 사용한 SURF 정합 성능 향상 기법)

  • SURF is a robust local invariant feature descriptor and has been used in many applications such as object recognition. Even though this algorithm has similar matching accuracy compared to the SIFT, which is another popular feature extraction algorithm, it has advantage in matching time. However, these descriptors do not consider relative location information of extracted interesting points to guarantee rotation invariance. Also, since they use gray image of original color image, they do not use the color information of images, either. In this paper, we propose a method for improving matching performance of SURF descriptor using the color and relative location information of interest points. The location information is built from the angles between the line connecting the centers of interest points and the orientation line constructed for the center of each interest points. For the color information, color histogram is constructed for the region of each interest point. We show the performance of our scheme through experiments.

  • In this paper, we propose a new hybrid speed function for image segmentation using level set. A new proposed speed function uses the region and boundary information of image object for the exact result of segmentation. The region information is defined by the probability information of pixel intensity in a ROI(region-of-interest), and the boundary information is defined by the gradient vector flow obtained from the gradient of image. We show the results of experiment for an various artificial image and real medical image to verify the accuracy of segmentation using proposed method.

Analysis of Real Estate Market Trend Using Text Mining and Big Data (빅데이터와 텍스트마이닝을 이용한 부동산시장 동향분석)

  • This study is on the trend of real estate market using text mining and big data. The data were collected through internet news posted on Naver from August 2016 to August 2017. As a result of TF-IDF analysis, the frequency was high in the order of housing, sale, household, real estate market, and region. Many words related to policies such as loan, government, countermeasures, and regulations were extracted, and the region - related words appeared the most frequently in Seoul. The combination of the words related to the region showed that the frequencies of 'Seoul - Gangnam', 'Seoul - Metropolitan area', 'Gangnam - reconstruction' and 'Seoul - reconstruction' appeared frequently. It can be seen that the people's interest and expectation about the reconstruction of Gangnam area is high.

  • In order to prevent the spread of COVID 19, the body temperature is measured when entering the building. In this paper, we try to certify the entry of the building through real-time face recognition based on the face learning data of visitors. The number of learning images are designed to be automatically labeled to increase facial recognition. Also, it designates the forehead region from the face region as the region of interest for accurate temperature measurements. In the future, we plan to establish a database that stores the temperature, access time, and information of visitors.

Microscopic Image-based Cancer Cell Viability-related Phenotype Extraction (현미경 영상 기반 암세포 생존력 관련 표현형 추출)

  • During cancer treatment, the patient's response to drugs appears differently at the cellular level. In this paper, an image-based cell phenotypic feature quantification and key feature selection method are presented to predict the response of patient-derived cancer cells to a specific drug. In order to analyze the viability characteristics of cancer cells, high-definition microscope images in which cell nuclei are fluorescently stained are used, and individual-level cell analysis is performed. To this end, first, image stitching is performed for analysis of the same environment in units of the well plates, and uneven brightness due to the effects of illumination is adjusted based on the histogram. In order to automatically segment only the cell nucleus region, which is the region of interest, from the improved image, a superpixel-based segmentation technique is applied using the fluorescence expression level and morphological information. After extracting 242 types of features from the image through the segmented cell region information, only the features related to cell viability are selected through the ReliefF algorithm. The proposed method can be applied to cell image-based phenotypic screening to determine a patient's response to a drug.

Eigenvalue Analysis of Arbitrarily Shaped, Concave Membranes With a Deep Groove Using a Sub-domain Method (영역 분할법을 이용한 깊은 홈을 가진 임의 형상 오목 멤브레인의 고유치 해석)

  • A sub-domain method for free vibration analysis of arbitrarily shaped, concave membranes with a deep groove is proposed in the paper. The proposed method divides the concave membrane of interest into two convex regions. The vibration displacement(approximate solution) of each convex region is assumed by linearly superposing plane waves generated at edges of the region. A sub-system matrix for each convex region is extracted by applying a provisional boundary condition to the approximate solution. Finally, a system matrix, which of the determinant gives eigenvalues of the concave membrane, is made by considering the fixed boundary condition(displacement zero condition) at edges and the compatibility condition(the condition of continuity in displacement and slope) at the interface between the two regions. Case studies show that the proposed method is valid and accurate when the eigenvalues by the proposed are compared to those by NDIF method, FEM, or the exact method.

Development of 3-Dimensional Static Infinite Elements with Various Decay Characteristics for Tunnel Analysis (터널해석을 위한 다양한 감쇠특성의 3차원 정적무한요소 개발)

  • Analysis problems of tunnels whose geometrical dimensions are very small compared with surrounding media can be treated as infinite region problems. In such cases, even if finite element models can be applied, excessive number of elements is required to obtain satisfactory accuracy. However, inaccurate results may be produced due to assumed artificial boundary conditions. To solve these problems, a hybrid model, which models the region of interest with finite elements and the surrounding infinite media with infinite elements, is introduced for the analysis of infinite region. Three-dimensional isoparametric infinite elements with various decay characteristics are formulated in this paper and the corresponding parameters are presented by means of parametric studies. Three-dimensional tunnel analysis performed on a representative example verifies the applicability of hybrid model using infinite elements.

People Counting Method using Moving and Static Points of Interest (동적 및 정적 관심점을 이용하는 사람 계수 기법)

  • Among available people counting methods, map-based approaches based on moving interest points have shown good performance. However, the stationary people counting is challenging in such methods since all static points of interest are considered as background. To include stationary people in counting, it is needed to discriminate between the static points of stationary people and the background region. In this paper, we propose a people counting method based on using both moving and static points. The proposed method separates the moving and static points by motion information. Then, the static points of the stationary people are classified using foreground mask processing and point pattern analysis. The experimental results reveal that the proposed method provides more accurate count estimation by including stationary people. Also, the background updating is enabled to solve the static point misclassification problem due to background changes.

Effect of Heat Loss on CO and NOx Emission Characteristics in the Postflame Region of Premixed Flames (예혼합 화염후류에서 열전달이 CO 및 NOx 생성 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • Strict pollutant regulations of NOx emission and increasing awareness of the environmental damage stimulated interest in research to obtain useful information regarding CO and NOx reductions at the same time. In this study, $CH_4$/air premixed flame was examined numerically to reduce CO and NOx emission level simultaneously in the post-flame region by the heat loss models in which radiative and combined conductive and convective heat losses were included. To reduce the NOx emission, first heat exchanger location was decided near the flame. After first heat exchanger was decided for the optimal NOx emission(about 30 ppm), in order to decide the optimal CO emission(about 30ppm), seocond heat exchanger location was tested and decided for several cases. Finally, the optimal location of heat exchanger for minimal CO and NOx emission simultaneously were determined and suggested.
