  • Optical filters with graded index profiles are designed by applying the fourier transform to a riccati equation which governs the reflection and transmission characteristics of inhomogeneous refractive index distributions. The inhomogeneous refractive index profile of an optical filter with specified target spectrum is obtained through iterations. The spectra response of the inhomogeneous refractive index layers are analyzed by using runge-dutta numerical method to solve the differential euations of the amplitude and the phase of reflection coefficient derived from the riccati equation and the results are in good agreement with the resutls obtained by using matrix method.

  • Time-of-flight impact collision ion scattering spectroscopy (TOF-ICISS) was applied to study the geometrical structure of the epitaxially grown BaTiO₃ layers on the MgO(100) surface. Hetero-epitaxial BaTiO₃ layers can be deposited by the following steps: first thermal evaporation of titanium onto the MgO(100) surface in the atmosphere of oxygen at 400℃, secondly thermal evaporation of barium in the same manner, and finally annealing at 800℃. Well ordered perovskite BaTiO₃ was confirmed from the ICISS spectra and reflection high electron energy diffraction (RHEED) patterns. It was also revealed that BaTiO₃ had cubic structure with the same lattice parameter of bulk phase.

  • Holographic polymer dispersed liquid crystals (HPDLCs) have fabricated by irradiating an Ar-ion laser ( ${\lambda}$=514nm) at various intensity on LC/acrylate monomer mixtures which were sandwitched between two ITO coated glass plates. Monomer systems were composed of dipentaerythritol-hydroxy penta acrylate (DPHPA, f=5)/monofunctional acrylate monofunctional monomers. The LC used in this system was E7 (BL001, Merck). Gratings were fabricated by periodic interference of twobeams. Reflection efficiency-irradiation intensity-monomer type relationships were obtained from the UV-visible spectra of the HPDLC films. Peaks were found at a bit smaller wavelength than 514nm, due to the shrinkage of mixture volume upon polymerization. Real time measurements of diffraction efficiency have been obtained according to monomer types and LC contents.

  • Asymmetric multiple quantum well ridge waveguide laser diodes (AMQW RWG LDs) with a wide and flat gain spectrum were designed and fabricated. The operating parameters and gain spectra were measured and analyzed for uncoated and anti-reflection (AR) coated LDs. For AR coated 500 mm-long RWG LOs, the extremely flat gain spectrum over a spectral range of 90 nm was obtained at the current 75 ㎃.

  • We report the current transport properties of a normal metal/organic conductor/ superconductor tunnel junction as a novel high- $T_{c}$ superconducting three terminal device. The organic copper (II) phthalocyanine (Cu-Pc) layer was used far a polaronic quasiparticle (QP) injector. The injection of polaronic QP from the Cu-Pc interlayer into a superconductor $Bi_2$$Sr_2$$CaCu_2$ $O_{8+}$ $\delta$/(BSCCO) thin film generated a substantially larger nonequilibrium effect as compared to the normal QP injection current. The tunneling spectroscopy of an Au/cu-PC/BSCCO junction exhibited a zero bias conductance peak which may be due to Andreev reflection at a Cu-Pc/d-wave superconductor junction.n..

  • The purpose of this research was to develop a the reflection technique with near infrared (NIR) radiation for estimating soil components. NIR reflectance was scanned at 2nm intervals from 1100 to 2500nm with an InfraAlyzer 500 (Bran & Luebbe Co.). Over 400 soil sample from fields of different crops and land-use over Youngnam and Honam regions were used to obtain mean diffuse reflection of the soil for the calibration and validation of the calibration set in estimating moisture, organic matter (OM) and total nitrogen (T-N) of the soils. Multiple linear regression (MLR) was used to evaluate the correlation of NIR spectroscopy method. Reflection pattern of NIR spectra for finely sized sample (<0.5mm) and coarsely sized soil(<2mm) did not show much difference. The results showed that NIR spectroscopy and coarsely sized soil (<2mm) did not show much difference. The results showed that NIR spectroscopy could be used as a routine soil testing method in estimating OM, moisture, T-N in soil samples simultaneously.

  • The purpose of this research was to find out suitable soil sample preparation and sample holding tools for NIR reflection radiation for estimating soil components. NIR reflectance was scanned at 2nm intervals from 1,100 to 2,500nm with an InfraAlyzer 500(Bran+Luebbe Co.). Coarse(2.0mm) and fine(0.5mm) soil sample and various sample holding tools were used to obtain mean diffuse reflection of the soil for the calibration and validation of the calibration set in estimating moisture, organic matter and total nitrogen of the soils. Multiple linear regression was used to obtain the best correlation of NIR spectroscopy method. Correlation of NIR spectroscopy method. Correlation of NIR spectra for finely and coarsely sized soil did not show much difference. The standard errors of prediction(SE) using different types of sample holding tools for organic matter, total nitrogen and soil moisture were better than 0.765, 0.041 and 0.63% respectively. From the results it can be concluded that NIR spectroscopy with flow type cell could be used as a fast routine testing method in quantitative determination of organic matter, total nitrogen and soil moisture.

  • The simple PSK signal generation method using a quadrature hybrid coupler and reflection coefficient elements was analyzed in this paper. The PSK modulation signal with a constant constellation is generated by reflection coefficient from 90o hybrid coupler output ports, the high-mode PSK signal is also generated by the hybrid structure of coupler, delay line and power combiner. The BPSK signal is simply generated by a 90o hybrid coupler and reflection elements, and QPSK with 90o phase constellation is generated by additional delay line and power combiner. By simulation results, the generated PSK signals by the proposed circuit get good modulation spectra within 3o phase error.

  • Plasma electrolyte oxidation (PEO) surface treatment of magnesium alloy, an optical analysis method through reflection spectra were measured. As a result, the sample is formed on the membrane form of MgO or $Mg(OH)_2$ is in the form of oxide. The wavelength energy of surface treatment of magnesium alloy sample observed 0.23eV red shift. The measured reflectance spectra observed with the three different signals. This is due to $Mg(OH)_2$ oxide layer formed on porous hole.

  • In general, NIR reflectance spectra (whether recorded using log(1/R) or the Kubelka-Munk function) are not linear functions of the concentration of the absorbers which we are measuring. There are several causes for this non-linearity, the most commonly cited one being front surface reflection. However, non-linearity also arises from the effects of particle size, sample thickness, void fraction, and experimental arrangement. In this talk, we will attempt to isolate the effects of the various causes, and show the effects of each, using both theoretical calculations and actual data. The listener should then be able to assess where we stand in our quest to produce “linear” data through pre-processing and/or alternate collection schemes.
