  • Recently, a laser displacement sensor is widely used for the manufacturing automation. The sensor is generally composed of a diode laser and a light receiving device. The diode laser emits a laser beam and the receiving device detects the light reflected from the measured object. The object position is obtained based upon triangulation method. As a light receiving device, a PSD is usually utilized since its structure is very simple and rugged and has a high accuracy. Although the theoretical relationship for this sensor had been developed, the characteristics of the sensor have not been much experimentally studied. In this paper, several experimental results will presented. The measurement accuracy is affected by the surface conditions such as the reflectance characteristics, the angle of the object's surface and the laser intensity. In addition, it is found that the PSD and the signal processing circuit have nonlinearities and showed that those nonlinearities can be reduced by controlling the emitting laser intensity.

  • In this paper, the transverse strain was measured using polarization maintaining fiber Bragg grating(PMFBG) sensor. PMFBG sensor was fabricated using phase mask and Excidmer laser. The reflected wavelength of PMFBG sensor had dual peaks due to intrinsic birefringence. To find the polarization axes, peak sensitivity was measured under compression test. The signal characteristics of PMFBG sensor were also examined in embedding condition. The embedded PMFBG sensor in epoxy block was loaded for the transverse strain measurement, The wavelength-swept fiber laser(WSFL) was used to construct the PMFBG sensor system. Experiments showed that the PMFBG sensor could successfully measure the transverse strain.

  • A lens which is one of cores for the high precision laser range finder is utilized to compute the distance by measuring the phase displacement. In order to measure the phase displacement, we transmit the optical signal from the laser diode to a target and receive the reflected laser light from the target. In this paper, we propose new lens design technique to solve the problem due to the inconsistent curvature of the lens, which consistently collects optical signals and performs the transmission and reception of the optical data, and test the implementation of the laser range finder based on the proposed technique. Since the proposed laser range finder has low error rate comparing to the conventional techniques, it may be apply to the high precision distance measurement.

  • This paper describes on the development of Passive-type Radar Reflector for Fisheries (PRR-F) based on the newly revised 2000 SOLAS regulations. The purpose of PRR-F is to provide it as the protection devices of a fishing net and a fishing field. The PRR-F is composed of corner cluster bundle of light galvanized iron, and it is inserted into floating styrofoam. Performance tests for the PRR-F are carried out in an anechoic chamber. The test results show that the reflected radar signal from PRR-F is large enough for the purpose.

  • In this paper describes image enhancement technique using deconvolution processing for ultrasonic nondestructive testing. When flaws are detected fur B-scan or C-scan, blurring effect which is caused by the moving intervals of transducer degrades the quality of images. In addition, acquisited images suffer form speckle noise which is caused by the ultrasonic components reflected from the grain boundary of material (1,2). The deconvolution technique can restore sharp peak value or clean image from blurring signal or image. This processing is applied to C-scan image obtained from known specimen. Experimental results show that the deconvolution processing contributes to get improved the quality of C-scan images.

  • This paper presents a digitally speed sensorless control system for induction motor with direct torque control (DTC). Some drawbacks of the classical DTC are the relatively large torque ripple in a low speed range and notable current pulsation during steady state. They are reflected speed response and increased acoustical noise. In this paper, the DTC quick response are preserved at transient state, while better qualify steady state performance is produced by space vector modulation (SVM). The system are closed loop stator flux and torque observer for wide speed range that inputs are currents and voltages sensing of motor terminal, model reference adaptive control (MRAC) with rotor flux linkages for the speed fuming signal at low speed range, two hysteresis controllers and optimal switching look-up table. Simulation results of the suggest system for the 2.2 [kW] general purposed induction motor are presented and discussed.

  • It is known that the adhesive interface testing of the rocket motor using the ultrasonic wave is superior to the other testing methods about the ability to economical detect the defects. But, the signal analysis of the ultrasonic wave takes a lot of time and efforts because the time interval of the transmitted pulse and the received pulse is too short to separate the reflected signals due to the multi-layers of the rocket motor. The ultrasonic testing of rocket motor have only applied to the automatic system about extremely limited areas like the debond in adhesive interface between the motor case and the insulator. In this study the new technique to detect the debond between the liner and the propellant using the property of the resonance and the lamb waves instead of the existing ultrasonic testing was described.

  • Recently, it is gradually raised necessity that interface is measured accurately and managed in industrial circles and medical world, An Ultrasonic wave transmitted from a focused beam transducer is being expected as a powerful tool for NDE of micro-defect. The ultrasonic NDE of the defect is based on the form of the wave reflected form the interface In this study, regarding to the thickness of film which is in opaque object and thickness measurement was done by MEM-cepstrum analysis of received ultrasonic wave. In measument results, film thickness which is beyond distance resolution capacity was measured accurately. Also, automatically repeated discrimination analysis method can be decided in the category of all kinds of defects on semiconductor package.

  • In this study, a wireless crack sensor is developed for monitoring cracks propagating in two dimensions. This sensor is developed by incorporating a laser-based optical navigation sensor board (ADNS-9500) into a smart wireless platform (Imote2). To measure crack propagation, the Imote2 sends a signal to the ADNS-9500 to collect a sequence of images reflected from the concrete surface. These acquired images can be processed in the ADNS-9500 directly (the navigation mode) or sent to Imote2 for processing (the frame capture mode). The computed crack displacement can then be transmitted wirelessly to a base station. The design and the construction of this sensor are reported herein followed by some calibration tests on one prototype sensor. Test results show that the sensor can provide sub-millimeter accuracy under sinusoidal and step movement. Also, the two modes of operation offer complementary performance as the navigation mode is more accurate in tracking large amplitude and fast crack movement while the frame capture mode is more accurate for small and slow crack movement. These results illustrate the feasibility of developing such a crack sensor as well as point out directions of further research before its actual implementation.

  • The time-frequency domain reflectometry(TFDR) is well known to detect and locate a fault in a coaxial cable[3]. Traditional reflectometry methods have been achieved in either the time domain or frequency domain only. However, the time-frequency domain reflectometry utilizes time and frequency information of a reflected signal passed through a cable to detect and locate the fault. The purpose of this paper is to find appropriate time-frequency distribution function suitable for a TFDR system. Choosing the appropriate time-frequency distribution function implies one can detect the fault and estimate the location accurately. We consider and compare adequate time-frequency distribution function on the basis of experimental results.
