Study on Reflected Pressure in a Shock Tunnel According to the Size of a Nozzle Throat (충격관 터널의 노즐목 크기에 따른 반사압력특성 분석)

  • In a reflected shock tunnel, stagnation conditions of a nozzle are determined by the flow behind a reflected shock. When calculating the flow behind the reflected shock, unlike a shock tube, the flow leakage through the nozzle is to be considered. The analytical studies were done to find out the characteristics of the stagnation conditions of the nozzle with various nozzle throat size. Experiments and numerical simulations were also carried out for further understanding of the flow leakage effects. It was found that the nozzle stagnation pressure was diminished by the increase of the size of the nozzle throat. It was also found that the steady pressure in the stagnation were maintained well at the area ratio of the driven tube to the nozzle throat is 4.5.

  • High enthalpy test facilities, such as a shock tunnel, are to be operated at the specific pressure ratio according to the desired test condition. A metallic diaphragm is machined or a forced rupture device is used to open it at a specific pressure ratio. The diaphragm opening procedure takes several hundred microseconds including rupture and deformation. This process is expected to affect the test conditions. In this study, numerical simulation was performed for different materials, thicknesses, and opening ratios. And the characteristics of shock wave generation and the stagnation condition in the tube are investigated. Results show that the final opening ratio and rupturing procedure directly affect the speed of a shock wave, stagnation pressure, and test time.

  • Two-dimensional Navier-Stokes codes are used to simulate the shock tunnel in Konkuk university. In order to design experiments in impulse facilities properly and to interpret data from such facilities, it is necessary to understand how the flow approaches steady state. This is done by determining the transient flow field and flow establishment time around a given model. This will be accomplished by developing appropriate CFD codes which solve the Navier-Stokes equations, and simulating the starting process and resulting unsteady viscous flow phenomena. The starting process in a shock tunnel consists of multiple shock interactions and contact discontinuities, which are difficult to solve with the classical shock capturing schemes. A recently developed high resolution scheme is adapted for resolving the unsteady phenomena of those multiple shock interactions and contact surfaces during the starting process. The bifurcation phenomenon due to the interactions of the reflected shock from the end of the shock tube with the boundary layer generated by the incident shock becomes of particular interest. By comparing with the experiment results, the accuracy of the numerical analysis is validated and it is demonstrated that the properties which can hardly be obtained through the experiment can be estimated.

  • Compression waves propagating in a high speed railway tunnel impose large pressure fluctuations on the train body or tunnel structures. The pressure fluctuations can cause ear discomfort for the passengers and increase the aerodynamic resistance of trains. As a fundamental research to resolve the pressure wave phenomenon in the tunnel, a steady theory of Chester-Chisnell- Whitham was applied to a simple shock tube with a sudden cross-sectional area reduction to model trains inside the tunnel. The results of the present theoretical analysis were compared with the experiments of the shock tube. The results show that the reflected compression wave from the model becomes stronger as the strength of incident compression wave and the blockage ratio increase. However, the compression wave passing through the model is not strongly dependent on the blockage ratio. The theoretical results are in good agreement with the experiments.

  • Compression waves propagating in a high-speed railway tunnel develops large pressure fluctuations on the train body or tunnel structures. The pressure fluctuations would cause an ear discomfort for the passengers and increase the aerodynamic resistance of trains. As a fundamental research to resolve the pressure wave phenomenon in the tunnel, experiments were carried out by using a shock tube with an open end. A blockage to model trains inside the tunnel was installed on the lower wall of shock tube, thus forming a sudden cross-sectional area reduction. The compression waves were obtained by the fast opening gate valve instead of a conventional diaphragm of shock tube and measured by the flush mounted pressure transducers with a high sensitivity. The experimental results were compared with the previous theoretical analyses. The results show that the ratio of the reflected to the incident compression wave at the sudden cross-sectional area reduction increases but the ratio of the passing to the incident compression wave decreases, as the incident compression wave becomes stronger. This experimental results are in good agreements with the previous theoretical ones. The maximum pressure gradient of the compression wave abruptly increases but the width of the wave front does not vary, as it passes over the sudden cross-sectional area reduction.

An Experimental Study on Transonic Airfoil Flows in a Shock Tube (충격파관 내 천음속 날개 유동에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • An experimental study of the transonic flows over NACA and double wedge airfoils was conducted with a shock tube. The configuration of test section with a slotted wall and chamber was designed and tested to minimize wall and reflected shock wave effects and use the shock tube as simple and less costly wind tunnel generating the relatively high Reynolds numbers transonic flow. Transonic airfoil flows at hot gas Mach numbers of 0.80~0.84, Reynolds number of about $1.2{\times}10^6$ on airfoil chord length and angles of attack of $0^{\circ}$ and $2^{\circ}$ were visualized with the shadowgraph method. The shock wave profiles on the airfoils were compared with the corresponding results from the conventional transonic wind tunnel tests. The experimental results showed that present shock tube exhibited the proper performance characteristics as transonic wind tunnel for tested Mach number range and airfoils.

Effects of supersonic condensing nozzle flow on oblique shock wave (超音速 노즐흐름에 있어서 凝縮이 傾斜衝擊波에 미치는 影響)

  • Last several stages of high capacity fossil power steam turbine and most stages of nuclear power steam turbine operate on wet steam. As a consequence, the flows in those cascades are accompanied by condensation, and the latent heat caused by condensation affects an oblique shock wave being generated at the vicinity of trailing of the blade. In the case of expanding of moist air through a suction type indraft wind tunnel, the effect of condensation affection the oblique shock wave generated by placing the small wedge into the supersonic part of the nozzle was investigated experimentally. In these connections, the relationship between condensation zone and reflection point of the incident oblique shock wave, angle between wedge bottom wall and oblique shock wave, and the variations of angles of incident and reflected shock waves due to the variation of initial stagnation relative humidity are discussed. Furthermore, the relationship between initial stagnation relative humidity and load working on the nozzle wall, obtained by measuring static pressure at the nozzle centerline, is discussed.

Experimental and Numerical Studies on Application of Industrial Explosives to Explosive Welding, Explosive Forming, Shock Powder Consolidation (산업용 폭약을 이용한 폭발용접, 폭발성형과 충격분말고화에 관한 실험 및 수치해석적 연구)

  • Theoretical backgrounds on the experimental methods of explosive welding, explosive forming and shock consolidation of powders are introduced. Explosive welding experiments of titanium (Ti) and stainless steel (SUS 304) plate were carried out. It was revealed that a series of waves of metal jet are generated in the contact surface between both materials; and that the optimal collision velocity and collision angle is about 2,100~2,800 m/s and $15{\sim}20^{\circ}$, respectively. Also, explosive forming experiments of Al plate were performed and compared to a conventional press forming method. The results confirmed that the shock-loaded Al plate has a larger curvature deformation than those made using conventional press forming. For shock consolidation of powders, the propagation behaviors of a detonation wave and underwater shock wave generated by explosion of an explosive are investigated by means of numerical calculation. The results revealed that the generation and convergence of reflected waves occur at the wall and center position of water column, and also the peak pressure of the converged reflected waves was 20 GPa which exceeds the detonation pressure. As results from the consolidation experiments of metal/ceramic powders ($Fe_{11.2}La_2O_3Co_{0.7}Si_{1.1}$), shock-consolidated $Fe_{11.2}La_2O_3Co_{0.7}Si_{1.1}$ bulk without cracks was successfully obtained by adapting the suggested water container and strong bonding between powder particles was confirmed through microscopic observations.
