  • In this paper, the dynamic controller design problem of a redundant planar 2-dof parallel manipulator is studied. Using the Euler-Lagrange equation, we formulate the dynamic model of the parallel manipulator in the joint space and propose an augmented PD controller with forward dynamic compensation for the parallel manipulator. By formulating the controller in the joint space, we eliminate the complex computation of the Jacobian matrix of joint angles with end-effector coordinate. So with less computation, our controller is easier to implement, and a shorter sampling period can be achieved, which makes the controller more suitable for high-speed motion control. Furthermore, with the combination of static friction model and viscous friction model, the active joint friction of the parallel manipulator is studied and compensated in the controller. Based on the dynamic parameters of the parallel manipulator evaluated by direct measurement and identification, motion control experiments are implemented. With the experiments, the validity of the dynamic model is proved and the performance of the controller is evaluated. Experiment results show that, with forward dynamic compensation, the augmented PD controller can improve the tracking performance of the parallel manipulator over the simple PD controller.

  • In this paper, a closed-form formulation for inverse kinematics of robot manipulators with kinematic redundancy under the constrained environment has been derived using the Kuhn-Tucker condition, the extended Lagrange multiplier method and the working set method. The proposed algorithm satisfies the necessaryand sufficient conditions for optimization subject to equality and inequality constraints. In addition, computationally efficient kinematic control methods have been proposed using differential kinemetics and gradient projection mehtod. The effectiveness of the proposed methods has been demonstrated with a 4-dof planar robot, and then a 7-dof spatial robot as a practical application to the nozzle dam task in the Nuclear Power Plant.

  • A lot of researches on the redundant manipulators have been focused mainly on the minimization of joint torques. However, it is well-known that the most dynamic control algorithms using local joint torque minimization cause huge torques which can not be implemented by practical motor drivers. A new control algorithm which reduces considerably such a huge-required-torque problem is proposed in this paper. It adapts fuzzy logic and genetic algorithm to the conventional local joint torque minimization algorithm. The proposed algorithm is applied to a 3-DOF redundant planar robot. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm works well.

  • To calibrate a non-redundantly actuated parallel mechanism, one can find actual kinematic parameters by means of geometrical constraint of the mechanism's kinematic structure and measurement values. However, the calibration algorithm for a non-redundant case does not apply fur a redundantly actuated parallel mechanism, because the angle error of the actuating joint varies with position and the geometrical constraint fails to be consistent. Such change of joint angle error comes from constraint torque variation with each kinematic pose (meaning position and orientation). To calibrate a redundant parallel mechanism, one therefore has to consider constraint torque equilibrium and the relationship of constraint torque to torsional deflection, in addition to geometric constraint. In this paper, we develop the calibration algorithm fir a redundantly actuated parallel mechanism using these three relationships, and formulate cost functions for an optimization algorithm. As a case study, we executed the calibration of a 2-DOF parallel mechanism using the developed algorithm. Coordinate values of tool plate were measured using a laser ball bar and the actual kinematic parameters were identified with a new cost function of the optimization algorithm. Experimental results showed that the accuracy of the tool plate improved by 82% after kinematic calibration in a redundant actuation case.

  • This paper considers a global resolution of kinematic redundancy under inequality constraints as a constrained optimal control. In this formulation, joint limits and obstacles are regarded as state variable inequality constraints, and joint velocity limits as control variable inequality constraints. Necessary and sufficient conditions are derived by using Pontryagin's minimum principle and penalty function method. These conditions leads to a two-point boundary-value problem (TPBVP) with natural, periodic and inequality boundary conditions. In order to solve the TPBVP and to find a global minimum, a numerical algorithm, named two-stage algorithm, is presented. Given initial joint pose, the first stage finds the optimal joint trajectory and its corresponding minimum performance cost. The second stage searches for the optimal initial joint pose with globally minimum cost in the self-motion manifold. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated through a simulation with a 3-dof planar redundant manipulator.

  • The inverse kinematic solutions for redundant manipulators using the optimality augmented resolution schemes have been used without investigating the characteristics of the optimal solutions. The questions with this kind of resolution methods are answered in this paper, that is (i) the characteristics of solutions, (ii) of algorithmic singularities, (iii) their dimensionality, and (iv) the invariance of the characteristics during resolutions. 3-DOF planar redundant robot is analyzed when the inverse kinematic method is applied with the manipulability as an example.

  • A new control method for a redundant manipulator is developed using a local optimal torque and null space joint velocity. By solving the dynamic control equations of the system, the local optimal torque is obtained. If only the local optimal torque is used for controlling the robot there is a possibility that the system is unstable. To eliminate the characteristics of instability during the movements, the control law with a null space concept is used. The new method is applied to the 3-DOF planar manipulator. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

  • A haptic rendering system is proposed for a puncture task of a virtual vertebra model. To build a mesh model from medical images, Delaunay triangulation is applied and physical models are based on elasticity theory. Also, a redundant actuated 6 DOF parallel type haptic device is designed to display large force and to resolve the singularity problem of parallel type mechanisms. Haptic feeling of puncture task and the performance of the proposed haptic device are tested by two puncture task experiments.

  • When the manipulator collides with surroundings, there occurs an impulse. To reduce the impulse, the self motion should maintain the manipulator's position by the minimally effective mass. At this time, we can use the local joint torque minimization algorithm to resolve the redundancy. In this study, to reduce the impulse and damages by the impact between the manipulator and surroundings, new control algorithm for the minimization of the joint torque using the kinetic redundancy and the impact minimization is proposed. It adapts fuzzy logic and genetic algorithm to the conventional local joint torque minimization algorithm. The proposed algorithm is applied to a 3-DOF redundant planar manipulator. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm works well.

  • In this paper, a hand exoskeleton actuated by air muscles(soft hand exoskeleton) is introduced. Some soft hand exoskeletons have already been developed to overcome the defects of hand exoskeletons based on linkage and pneumatic piston system-they are usually bulky and do not have enough degree of freedom(DOF). However, soft hand exoskeletons still have defects. Their motions are not precise as linkage based hand exoskeletons, because their actuator, such as air muscle is made of soft materials. So we developed a new linkage which is not bulky and has redundant DOF. It is combined with air muscle in a specific way so that it acts as a guide when air muscle is actuated. Some experiments were conducted to evaluate the validity and usability of our hand exoskeleton.
