  • Based on the dual hardware and software with distributed recovery blocks, the centralized type fault tolerant store management system(SMS) was proposed. As a result of trade off study related to mutiplex hardware system design, dual single board computer(SBC) was adapted. To verify redundancy function of the proposed structure, the prototype SMS and weapon simulator were used. The proposed SMS operated normally without being affected by a primary SBC failure. The switching time from primary SBC to shadow SBC was within 200 ms. The reliability of the proposed SMS was predicted and compared with the non fault tolerant SMS, thereby it was proved that the proposed SMS has a higher reliability than the non fault tolerant system within effective range.

  • This paper proposes a novel scheme of fault detection and self-recovery for space-borne dual ring counters subject to transient faults. The considered ring counter is equipped with hardware redundancy, but it has a limited output domain where direct access to the current state is unavailable. We employ the theory of corrective control to detect any transient fault occurring to the counter bits and to realize immediate self-recovery of the ring counter back to the normal state. The structure of the fault-tolerant controller is designed to be minimal regardless of the counter size. To validate the applicability, we implement the proposed system on a commercial FGPA board.

  • This paper considers some reliability indices, such as availability, average availability, reliability and steady state availability, of a redundant system with the function of switchover processing. We also derive the confidence limits for steady state availability of such system. The system, which is considered in this paper, consists of an active unit, a standby unit and a switchover device. In addition, the switchover processing is controlled by a control module. The effect of failure of the control module is taken into account to develop our reliability model for the redundant structure. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate our results.

  • This paper proposes a continuum mechanism for manually controlled endoscopic surgical instruments. The wire-driven mechanism is typically adapted for endoscopic surgical tools because motors cannot be embedded to the joints due to the size limitation. However, the conventional wire-driven mechanism has inherent problems caused by redundancy, such as deflection and low precision. It does not have operating force and manipulability for surgery. Therefore, a method to increase the force of the continuum mechanism using a multi-wire with simple mechanical structure is proposed. Moreover, for intuitive operation, a hand-controller mechanism that can manipulate the length of the wire without complex process is proposed. Finally, we show that the proposed mechanism and methods are applicable to endoscopic surgical tools through simple experiments.

  • A controlled medical vocabulary is a vital component of medical information management because it enables computers to use information meaningfully and different institutions to share the medical data. There are currently many standard medical vocabularies - SNOMED-CT, ICD-10, UMLS, GALEN, MED, etc, but none is universally accepted as an optimal controlled medical vocabulary for application to medical information system. Moreover, it is difficult to settle the well-designed local data dictionary consisting of controlled medical vocabularies for the individual hospital information system (HIS). One of the major reasons is the local terminology with poor contents have been used in the hospital. Thus, as a trial, the local controlled vocabulary referencing system has being constructed in a limited medical field - nuclear medicine. We selected practical nuclear medicine terms from interpretation reports and electronic medical records, and removed ambiguity and redundancy, mapping the selected terms to standard medical vocabularies. Relationship and hierarchy structure between terms have being made, referring to standard medical vocabularies. Further studies may be warranted.

  • In the case of multi-mission LEO(Low Earth Orbit) operations, depending on the orbit of each satellite, one ground site is supposed to be communicated with more than two satellites at the same time. On top of that, image data processing system is generally mission-specific and 1:1 backup configuration. For the reason, if ground site has smaller number of antenna than that of satellite, interface with image data processing system would be very complicated. In this paper, considering that two LEO satellites can be operating and image data recording unit in redundancy can be easily plug-in, the implementation of matrix receiving structure is described. This matrix receiving structure has been validated from KOMPSAT-2 and -3(KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite-2 and -3) since KOMPSAT-3 was launched in May, 2012. This structure will be applied for the KOMPSAT-3A and -5 through its expandability.

  • As the occupancy rate of the flash memory increases in the storage media market for the embedded system and the semi-conductor industry grows, the demand and supply of flash memory is increasing by a big margin. They are especially used in large quantity in the smart phones, tablets, PC, SSD and Soc(System on Chip) etc. The flash memory is divided into the NOR type and NAND type according to the cell arrangement structure and the NAND type is divided into the SLC(Single Level Cell) and MLC(Multi Level Cell) according to the number of bits that can be stored in each cell. Many tests have been performed on NOR type such as BIST(Bulit-In Self Test) and BIRA(Bulit-In Redundancy Analysis) etc, but there is little study on the NAND type. For the case of the existing BIST, the test can be proceeded using external equipments like ATE of high price. However, this paper is an attempt for the improvement of credibility and harvest rate of the system by proposing the BIST for the MLC NAND type flash memory of Finite State Machine structure on which the pattern test can be performed without external equipment since the necessary patterns are embedded in the interior and which uses the MLC NAND March(x) algorithm and pattern which had been proposed for the MLC NAND type flash memory.

  • In structural health monitoring, it is meaningful to comprehensively utilize accelerometers and strain gauges to obtain the modal information of a structure. In this paper, a modal estimation theory is proposed, in which the displacement modes of the locations without accelerometers can be estimated by the strain modes of selected strain gauge measurements. A two-stage sensor placement method, in which strain gauges are placed together with triaxial accelerometers to obtain more structural displacement mode information, is proposed. In stage one, the initial accelerometer locations are determined through the combined use of the modal assurance criterion and the redundancy information. Due to various practical factors, however, accelerometers cannot be placed at some of the initial accelerometer locations; the displacement mode information of these locations are still in need and the locations without accelerometers are defined as estimated locations. In stage two, the displacement modes of the estimated locations are estimated based on the strain modes of the strain gauge locations, and the quality of the estimation is seen as a criterion to guide the selection of the strain gauge locations. Instead of simply placing a strain gauge at the midpoint of each beam element, the influence of different candidate strain gauge positions on the estimation of displacement modes is also studied. Finally, the modal assurance criterion is utilized to evaluate the performance of the obtained multitype sensor placement. A bridge benchmark structure is used for a numerical investigation to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed multitype sensor placement method.

  • This paper proposes 'Coding Unit Tree' based on quadtree efficiently with motion vector to represent splitting information of a Coding Unit (CU) in HEVC. The new international video coding, High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), adopts various techniques and new unit concept: CU, Prediction Unit (PU), and Transform Unit (TU). The basic coding unit, CU is larger than macroblock of H.264/AVC and it splits to process image-based quadtree with a hierarchical structure. However, in case that there are complex motions in CU, the more signaling bits with motion information need to be transmitted. This structure provides a flexibility and a base for a optimization, but there are overhead about splitting information. This paper analyzes those signals and proposes a new algorithm which removes those redundancy. The proposed algorithm utilizes a type code, a dominant value, and residue values at a node in quadtree to remove the addition bits. Type code represents a structure of an image tree and the two values represent a node value. The results show that the proposed algorithm gains 13.6% bit-rate reduction over the HM-1.0.

  • In accordance with the rapid growth of digital media in 1990s, the state of indetermination that is found in digital process has been emphasized in the field of natural science and philosophy. Digitalized space design has been dramatically developed and it raised heated debate and comment on 'folded space' The purpose of this thesis is to explore how the cognitive-ecological factors constitute fold structures in space design of the late 20th century. Syntax of space structure and geometric composition were analyzed to define what types of cognitive-ecological factors are contrived in the process of visual information. In particular, I put higher theoretical emphasis on what characteristics are ensued in the process of structuring spaces than any other subjects. Through theses analyses and discussions, I raised questions on what principles are operating to create new space design that counts on non-linear structure and its formational process. And I also observed what influences these structural principles of design could fundamentally bring to human beings. First, I proposed that we could overcome reductionist space design through cognitive-ecological approach. Some key concepts such as affordance, parallel processing, and redundancy were adopted as defining elements of non-linear structures. As a result of analyses, I found that the cognitive-ecological approach could substitute the reductionist space design of the past. What is also found is that the three variables are the ultimate ecological elements. In addition, as a methodological concept of fold structures, the form of 'topology' was highlighted because it could be a supporting idea to the cognitive-ecological factors. Second, I claimed that non-linear design is more experiential than rational linear design, and it is more efficiently correspondent to human being than any other forms. What is intended and implied in non-linear structure is also indicated.
