  • The purpose of this study is to contribute to strengthening the response of local governments to the emergence of new infectious diseases by identifying the urban characteristics affecting their spread. To this end, the urban characteristics influencing the spread of infectious diseases were identified from previous studies. Moreover, the variations in the impact of urban characteristics that affected the number of confirmed COVID-19 patients was spatially analyzed using geographically weighted regression (GWR). The analysis indicated that the explanatory power of the GWR was approximately 12.4% higher than that of the ordinary least squares method. Moreover, the explanatory power of the model in the northern regions, such as Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Gangwon, was particularly high, indicating that the urban characteristics affecting the spread of COVID-19 vary by region. The results of this study can be used as a basis for suggesting the formulation of customized policies reflecting the characteristics of each local government rather than a uniform spread reduction policy.

  • In this study, the photo-deposition method was used to introduce Ag onto the surface of TiO2 to synthesize an Ag-TiO2 composite. The effects of the varying amounts of AgNO3 precursor and annealing time periods on the Ag content in the composites, as well as their antibacterial characteristics under visible light conditions were studied. SEM analysis revealed the spherical morphology of the Ag-TiO2 composite. Compared with TiO2, the Ag particles were too small to be observed. An XPS analysis of the Ag-TiO2 surface confirmed the Ag content and showed the peak intensities for elements such as Ag, Ti, O, C, and Si. The highest Ag content was observed when 33.3 wt.% of AgNO3 and an annealing time of 6 h were employed; this was the optimum annealing time for Ti-Ag-O bonding, in that the lowest number of O bonds and the highest number of Ag bonds were confirmed by XPS analysis. Superior antibacterial properties against Bacillus and Escherichia coli, in addition to the widest inhibition zones were exhibited by the Ag-TiO2 composite with an increased Ag content in a disk diffusion test, the bacterial reduction rate against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli being 99.9%.

  • Concrete in water environment is easily subjected to the attack of leaching, which causes its mechanical reduction and durability deterioration, and the key to improving the leaching resistance of concrete is to increase the compaction of its microstructure formed by the curing. This paper performs a numerical investigation on the intrinsic relationship between microstructures formed by the hydration of cement and slag and leaching resistance of concrete in water environment. Firstly, a shrinking-core hydration model of blended cement and slag is presented, in which the interaction of hydration process of cement and slag is considered and the microstructure composition is characterized by the hydration products, solution composition and pore structure. Secondly, based on Fick's law and mass conservation law, a leaching model of hardened paste is proposed, in which the multi-species ionic diffusion equation and modified Gérard model are established, and the model is numerically solved by applying the finite difference method. Finally, two models are combined by microstructure composition to form an integrated curing-leaching model, and it is used to investigate the relationship between microstructure composition and leaching resistance of slag-blended cement pastes.

  • We investigated an electrochemical properties for Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) monolayer films of sphingomyelin(SP) and polyamic acid(PAA) mixture(1:1, 2:1 and 3:1 molar ratio). LB monolayer films of mixture was deposited by the LB method on the indium tin oxide(ITO) glass. The electrochemical properties measured by cyclic voltammetry with three-electrode system in 0.1N $KClO_4$ solution. As a result, LB monolayer films of SP and PAA mixture was appeared on irreversible process caused by the reduction current from the cyclic voltammogram. Diffusion coefficient(D) in the SP and PAA mixture was calculated $2.670{\times}10^{-5}$, $3.562{\times}10^{-5}$ and $1.005{\times}10^{-5}cm^2s^{-1}$ at 1:1, 2:1 and 3:1 molar ratio, respectively.

  • We investigated the electrochemical properties for Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films mixed with fatty acid (8A5H) and phospholipid (DLPE, DMPC, and DPPA). LB films of 8A5H monolayer and 8A5H-phospholipid mixture were deposited using the Langmuir-Blodgett method on the indium tin oxide(ITO) glass. The electrochemical properties measured using cyclic voltammetry with three-electrode system, an Ag/AgCl reference electrode, a platinum wire counter electrode and LB film-coated ITO working electrode at various concentrations(0.1, 0.5, and 1.0 mol/L) of $NaClO_4$ solution. A measuring range was reduced from initial potential to -1350 mV, continuously oxidized to 1650 mV and measured to the initial point. The scan rate was 50, 100, 150 and 200 mV/s, respectively. As a result, LB films of fatty acid and phospholipid (8A5H/DLPE and DPPA) appeared irreversible process were caused by only the reduction current from the cyclic voltammogram and LB film of 8A5H-DMPC mixture was found to be caused by a reversible oxidation-reduction process.

  • Citrate ion is a commonly used reductant in metal colloid synthesis, undergoes strong surface interaction with silver nanocrystallites. The slow crystal growth observed as a result of the interaction between the silver surface and the citrate ion makes this reduction process unique compared to other chemical and radiolytic synthetic methods. The antimicrobial effects of silver (Ag) ion or salts are well known, but the effects of citrate coated Ag nanoparticles (CAgNPs) are scant. Herein, we have isolated biofilm causative bacteria and fungi from drinking water PVC pipe lines. Stable CAgNPs were prepared and the formation of CAgNPs was confirmed by UV-visible spectroscopic analysis and recorded the localized surface plasmon resonance of CAgNPs at 430 nm. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic analysis revealed C=O and O-H bending vibrations due to organic capping of silver responsible for the reduction and stabilization of the CAgNPs. X-ray diffraction micrograph indicated the face centered cubic structure of the formed CAgNPs, and morphological studies including size (average size 50 nm) were carried out using transmission electron microscopy. The hydrodynamic diameter (60.7 nm) and zeta potential (-27.6 mV) were measured using the dynamic light scattering technique. The antimicrobial activity of CAgNPs was evaluated (in vitro) against the isolated fungi, Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria using disc diffusion method and results revealed that CAgNPs with 170ppm concentration are having significant antimicrobial effects against an array of microbes tested.

  • Microbial wound infection prolonged the hospitalization and increase the cost for wound management. Silver is commonly used as antimicrobial wound dressing. However, it causes several adverse side effects. Hence, this study was aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial efficiency of Swietenia macrophylla seed extract on clinical wound pathogens. Besides, the bioactive constituents of the seed extract were also determined. S. macrophylla seeds were extracted with methanol by maceration method. The seed extract inhibited 5 test bacteria and 1 yeast on disc diffusion assay. The antibacterial activity was broad spectrum, as the extract inhibited both Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. On kill curve analysis, the antibacterial activity of the seed extract was concentration-dependent, the increase of extract concentration resulted in more reduction of bacterial growth. The extract also caused 99.9% growth reduction of Bacillus subtilis relative to control. A total of 21 compounds were detected in gas chromatography- mass spectrometry analysis. The predominant compounds present in the extract were oleic acid (18.56%) and linoleic acid (17.72%). In conclusion, the methanolic extract of S. macrophylla seeds exhibited significant antimicrobial activity on clinical wound pathogens. Further investigations should be conducted to purify other bioactive compounds from the seeds of S. macrophylla.

  • Titanium in solution of EDTA (Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) yield well-defined, reversible polarographic waves. In this report, a polarographic method for rapid determination of titanium in the Korean ilmenite was proposed, This polarographic method is based on the measurement of polarogram in the supporting electrolyte of EDTA. As the pH is increased the wave become more irreversible the diffusion current are diminished, and the half wave potential become more negative. In spite of the complication arising from numerous titanium species, in 0.2 M of EDTA, pH 6.3, the titanium waves are reproducible and analytically useful. In this medium titanium ion give well-defined reduction wave, and the half wave potential were -0.61V vs S.C.E. at pH 6.3. At the same time, the wave had a linear relationship between the concentration of titanium ion and the wave height. The Korean ilmenites were analyzed by this method and satisfactory results were obtained.

  • The uranium(VI) complexes with new unsaturated macrocyclic ligands of cryptand types and the neodymium(III) complexes with cryptand 222 and DBC ligands have been investigated polarographically in dimethylsulfoxide solvent. The reduction states, electron numbers involved in the reduction process, effects of the added acid on the polarograms of complexes, and the mechanisms of the reduction electrode reactions have been examined. The stability constants and mole-ratio of new complexes were also obtained by polarographic method. The reaction of ligands was controlled by the diffusion in the reduction with four electrons at a step, whereas the redox reaction with six electrons at three steps in $UO_2\;^{2+}$ complexes with macrocyclic ligands and the redox reaction with one electron at a step in $Nd^{3+}$ complexes with cryptand 222 and DBC have been observed. The imine ligands formed stable complexes with uranium(VI) above pH 7.0, and the neodymium(III) complexes with cryptand 222 and DBC ligands were stable above pH 4.0.

  • Although magnetic resonance imaging without linear hardening of CT is recognized as a method of obtaining high contrast of tissue and excellent resolution image in brain disease and head and neck examination, magnetic susceptibility artifact is generated in case of metal implants in the oral cavity, which is an obstacle to image diagnosis. Therefore, an effort was made in this thesis to find a method to reduce artifacts caused by dental implants and prosthesis in MRI. Implant-induced artifacts in magnetic resonance imaging showed that the signal size increased with shorter TE in GE technique and was inconsistent with water temperature change. In SE technique as well, the signal size of water was generally higher than that of air, but the signal to noise ratio (SNR) was not different by air and temperature. In EPI technique, images with fewer artifacts were obtained quantitatively and qualitatively when there was more water than air, and the signal to noise ratio was measured the highest, especially at water temperatures of 20° and 30°. In conclusion, when examining using the EPI technique rather than the SE or the GE technique, obtaining brain diffusion using a 20° and 30° water bag reduces the magnetic susceptibility artifacts caused by implants and prosthesis, suggesting that it may provide images with high diagnostic value.
