TBP (TATA-binding protein)-related factor 2 (TRF2) regulates transcription during a nuber of cellular processes. We previously demonstrated that it is localized in the cytoplasm and is translocated to the nucleus by DNA-damaging agents. However, the cytoplasmic localization of TRF2 is controversial. In this study, we reconfirmed its cytoplasmic localization in various ways and examined its nuclear migration. Stresses such as heat shock, redox agents, heavy metals, and osmotic shock did not affect localization whereas genotoxins such as methyl methanesulfonate (MMS), cisplatin, etoposide, and hydroxyurea caused it to migrate to the nucleus. Adriamycin, mitomycin C and ${\gamma}$-rays had no obvious effect. We determined optimal conditions for the nuclear migration. The proportions of cells with nuclei enriched for TRF2 were 25-60% and 5-10% for stressed cells and control cells, respectively. Nuclear translocation was observed after 1 h, 4 h and 12 h for cisplatin, etoposide and MMS and hydroxyurea, respectively. The association of TRF2 with the chromatin and promoter region of the proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) gene, a putative target of TRF2, was increased by MMS treatment. Thus TRF2 may be involved in genotoxin-induced transcriptional regulation.
In this research, the enhancement of electron-transfer activity of hemoglobin (Hb) in dodecanoic acid film was investigated for the first time. This type of composite film was made on glassy carbon electrode by casting method. Cyclic voltammetric result of the modified electrode displays a well defined redox peaks which was attributed to the direct electrochemical response of Rb. Our results illustrate that Rb exchange electrons directly with electrode and exhibits the characteristics of peroxidase. When we apply this modified electrode as a biosensor, it gives excellent performances in the electrocatalytic reduction of hydrogen peroxide ($H_{2}O_{2}$). Through the optimal conditions, the proposed biosensor shows the linear range for H2O2 determination was from $1{\times}10^{-5}$ to $1.25{\times}10^{-4}mol/L$ with a detection limit of $1{\times}10^{-7}mol/L$. The biosensor retained more than 90% of the initial response after 14 days.
Gallium is an important element in the production of a variety of compound semiconductors for optoelectronic devices. Gallium has a low melting point and is easily oxidized to give oxides of different compositions that depend on the conditions of solutions containing Ga. Gallium electrode reaction is highly irreversible in acidic media at the dropping mercury electrode. The passive film on a gallium surface is formed during anodic oxidation of gallium metal in alkaline media. Besides, some results in published reports have not been consistent and reproducible. An increase in the demand of intermetallic compounds and semiconductors containing gallium gives rise to studies on electrosynthesis of them and an increase of gallium concentration in the environment with various application of gallium causes the development of electroanalysis tools of Ga. It is required to understand the electrochemistry of Ga and to predict the electrochemical behavior of Ga to meet these needs. Any review papers related to the electrochemistry of gallium have not been published since 1978, when the review on the subject was published by Popova et al. In this study, the redox behavior, anodic oxidation, and electrodeposition of gallium, and trace determination of gallium by stripping voltammetries will be reviewed.
A conducting polymer layer was introduced into the pore surface of mesoporous carbon via vapor infiltration of a monomer and subsequent chemical oxidative polymerization. The polypyrrole, conducting polymer has attracted considerable attention due to the high electrical conductivity and stability under ambient conditions. The mesoporous carbon-polypyrrole nanocomposite exhibited the retained porous structure, such as mesoporous carbon with a three-dimensionally connected pore system after intercalation of the polypyrrole layer. In addition, the controllable addition of pyrrole monomer can provide the mesoporous carbon-polypyrrole nanocomposites with a tunable amount of polypyrrole and texture property. The polypyrrole layer improved the electrode performance in the electrochemical double layer capacitor. This improved electrochemical performance was attributed to the high surface area, open pore system with three-dimensionally interconnected mesopores, and reversible redox behavior of the conducting polypyrrole. Furthermore, the correlation between the amount of polypyrrole and capacitance was investigated to check the effect of the polypyrrole layer on the electrochemical performance.
Selecting a site for the safe disposal of radioactive waste requires the evaluation of a wide range of geologic, mineralogic, hydrologic, and physicochemical properties. Although highly diverse, these properties are in fact interrelated. Site requirements are also diverse because they are influenced by the nature of the radionuclides in the waste, for example, their half-lives, specific energy, and chemistry. A fundamental consideration in site selection is the mineralogy of the host rock, and one of the most ubiquitous mineral groups is clay minerals. Clays and clay minerals as in situ lithologic components and engineered barriers may playa significant role in retarding the migration of radionuclides. Their high sorptivity, longevity (stability), low permeability, and other physical factors should make them a very effective retainer of most radionuclides in nuclear wastes. There are, however, some unanswered questions. For example, how will their longevity and physicochemical properties be influenced by such factors as radionuclide concentration, radiation intensity, elevated temperatures, changes in redox condition, pH, and formation fluids for extended periods of time? Understanding of mechanisms affecting clay mineral-radionuclide interactions under prevailing geochemical conditions is important; however, the utilization of experimental geochemical information related to physicochemical properties of clays and clay-bearing materials with geohydrologic models presents a uniquely challenging problem in that many assessments have to be based on model predictions rather than on experiments. These are high-priority research investigations that need to be addressed before complete reliance for disposal area performance is made on clays and clay minerals.
The superconducting magnetic separation system has been developing to separate the iron oxide scale from the feed water of the thermal power plant. The accumulation in the boiler lowers the heat exchange rate or in the worst case damages it. For this reason, in order to prevent scale generation, controlling pH and redox potential is employed. However, these methods are not sufficient and then the chemical cleaning is performed regularly. A superconducting magnetic separation system is investigated for removing iron oxide scale in a feed water system. Water supply conditions of the thermal power plant are as follows, flow rate 400 t / h, flow speed 0.2 m / s, pressure 2 MPa, temperature $160-200^{\circ}C$, amount of scale generation 50 - 120 t / 2 years. The main iron oxide scale is magnetite (ferromagnetic substance) and its particle size is several tens ${\mu}m$. As the first step we are considering to introduce the system to the chemical cleaning process of the thermal power plant instead of the thermal power plant itself. The current status of development will be reported.
The high theoretical energy density ($2600Wh\;kg^{-1}$) of Lithium-sulfur batteries and the high theoretical capacity of elemental sulfur ($1672mAh\;g^{-1}$) attract significant research attention. However, the poor electrical conductivity of sulfur and the polysulfide shuttle effect are chronic problems resulting in low sulfur utilization and poor cycling stability. In this study, we address these problems by coating a polyethylene separator with a layer of activated carbon powder. A lithium-sulfur cell containing the activated carbon powder-coated separator exhibits an initial specific discharge capacity of $1400mAh\;g^{-1}$ at 0.1 C, and retains 63% of the initial capacity after 100 cycles at 0.2 C, whereas the equivalent cell with a bare separator exhibits a $1200mAh\;g^{-1}$ initial specific discharge capacity, and 50% capacity retention under the same conditions. The activated carbon powder-coated separator also enhances the rate capability. These results indicate that the microstructure of the activated carbon powder layer provides space for the sulfur redox reaction and facilitates fast electron transport. Concurrently, the activated carbon powder layer traps and reutilizes any polysulfides dissolved in the electrolyte. The approach presented here provides insights for overcoming the problems associated with lithium-sulfur batteries and promoting their practical use.
The oxidation states of structural Fe in minerals reflect the paleo-depositional redox conditions for the biologically or abiotically induced mineral formation. Particularly, nano-scale analysis using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) is necessary to identify evidence for the microbial role in the biomineralization. HRTEM-EELS analysis of oxidation states of structural Fe and carbon bonding structure differentiate biological factors in mineralization by mapping the distribution of Fe(II)/Fe(III) and source of organic C. HRTEM-EELS technique provides geomicrobiologists with the direct nano-scale evidence of microbe-mineral interaction.

The pseudocapacitor has a high energy density characteristic because it accumulates charges through a paradic redox reaction. However, due to its strong insulation properties, metal hydroxides should be designed as structural systems optimized for charge transfer to support fast electron transport. Also, Nickel material is weak to heat and is easily deformed when used as a cathode material, so stability must be secured. In this study, nickel hydroxide was produced by electrodeposition to secure the stability of nickel. Electrodeposition is a synthetic method suitable for growing optimized nickel hydroxide because it allows fine control. Nickel hydroxide (Ni(OH)2) is a metal hydroxide used as a pseudocapacitor anode due to its high capacitance, electrical conductivity and resistance. Therefore, in order to determine how Ni(OH)2 nanosheets are formed and what are the optimization conditions, various measurement methods were used to focus on structural growth of nanosheets produced by electrodeposition.

Ultrawide bandgap gallium oxide (Ga2O3) semiconductors are known to have excellent photocatalytic properties due to their high redox potential. In this study, CO2 reduction is demonstrated using nanostructured Ga2O3 photocatalyst under ultraviolet (254 nm) light source conditions. After the CO2 reduction, C2H4 remained as a by-product in this work. Nanostructured Ga2O3 photocatalyst also showed an excellent endurance characteristic. Photogenerated electron-hole pairs boosted the CO2 reduction to C2H4 via nanostructured Ga2O3 photocatalyst, which is attributed to the ultrawide and almost direct bandgap characteristics of the gallium oxide semiconductor. The findings in this work could expedite the realization of CO2 reduction and a simultaneous C2H4 production using a low cost and high performance photocatalyst.
