In this study, a heavy-metal stabilization treatment using stabilizing agents derived from waste resources was utilized on Incheon North Port range sediment contaminated with Pb, Zn, and Cu. Both calcined red mud (5%, 10%, and 15% w/w) and oyster shell (5%, 10%, and 15% w/w) were applied for a wet-curing duration of 15 days. From the sequential extraction results, the oxide and organic fraction of heavy metals (Pb, Zn, and Cu) were observed strongly in the contaminated sediment. However, the fraction of heavy metal in the stabilized sediment was higher than the organic and residual fraction, in comparison to the contaminated sediment. Moreover, the leaching of heavy metals was reduced in the stabilized sediment, compared with the contaminated sediment. From these results, red mud and oyster shell were shown to be potential stabilizers of heavy metals in contaminated sediment.

This study aims to make artificial stone by recycling blast furnace slag powder, red mud and recycled aggregate, which are known as industrial waste. Recycled aggregate is a typical construction waste, and various recycled products such as concrete block are being sold. In this study, we tried to make artificial stone mixed with waste such as recycled aggregate, and experimented with the use of artificial stone and further study. As the red mud replacement ratio increased, the absorption ratio, fluidity and air content of the matrix were measured to be decreased, and the strength and density were found to increase. The fluidity and absorption ratio decreased with increasing the replacement ratio of recycled aggregate, and the air quantity, rate of aggregate on the surface, density and intensity increased to a certain level. Therefore, this study intends to make artificial stone using recycled resources and conducted basic experiments for further study.

In this study, the engineering charateristics of recycled cold asphalt mixtures using waste glass and red mud were examined as part of the development of low carbon road pavement materials using large amounts of waste. It also examined the satisfaction of the performance criteria specified in the standard. As a result of the study, it was found that RCA using waste glass were not met standard of GR since strain resistance reduced. Therefore, it has been shown that improvements in the composition of the mixture are needed. It has also been shown to significantly improve the performance of the mixture when adding red mud. In addition, it was found that the quality standards for stability, flow value, indirect tensile strength and tensile strength ratio as specified by GR are satisfied.
The adsorbent for removal of heavy metal ions is prepared reutilizing the leached sludge generated in process of making the red mud coagulant we have develope. The pellet-type adsorbent is made by heat-treating a mixture of 10g of the leached sludge, 1g of kaolin, and 2 g of sodium silicate solution at $600^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. In experiments of batch adsorption, the adsorbent shows good performance in adsorption of $Pb^{2+}$ ion.

Radon is one of the substances that pollute the indoor air and is classified as a first-level carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer(IARC) together with asbestos, and it is reported that it can cause lung cancer. The World Health Organization(WHO) reports that lung cancer is the second leading cause of lung cancer, and 6-15% of lung cancer patients report lung cancer caused by radon. Radon occurs in cracks in concrete and aged buildings, and is detected in soil, rocks, groundwater, and so on. It is a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas which is adsorbed to dust in the air and enters through human respiratory system. This study used vermiculite (expanded vermiculite), which has excellent ion exchange ability and a large number of pores, and industrial by - product red mud which has heavy metal adsorption ability, in order to adsorb radon. A matrix capable of adsorbing radon was prepared, and the characteristics of each material were compared and analyzed.

This study examined the removal rate of heavy metals from synthetic control water using red mud and lime stone. Overall, the percent of absorption obtained in this study for the red mud treatment was 94.0% ($Pb^{2+}$), 67.1% ($As^{3+}$), 37.5% ($Cu^{2+}$), and 36.6% ($Cr^{6+}$), while that of lime stone was $Pb^{2+}$ (30.8%), $Cu^{2+}$ (16.5%), $Cr^{6+}$ (11.5%), and $As^{3+}$ (8.9%). The kinetic data presented that the slow course of adsorption follows the Pseudo first and second order models, the equilibriuim adsorption of $Cr^{6+}$ and $Pb^{2+}$ obeys Freundlich isotherm model, while the adsorption of $Cu^{2+}$ obeys only Langmuir model. The results also showed that adsorption rate slightly increased with increasing pH from 5 to 9. Interestingly, this trend is similar to results obtained as function of loading amount of red mud. Meanwhile, an unit adsorption rate was slightly decreased. For lime stone, it did not much change in adsorption as function of treatment amount. Consequently, it was concluded that the absorbents can be successfully used the removal of the heavy metals from the aqueous solutions.

Red mud is generated as a by-product during the production of aluminum hydroxide from bauxite ore. In this study inorganic coagulants were prepared by leaching aluminum and iron from red mud with acids under various operating conditions. The optimum leaching efficiency of Al and Fe was obtained by contacting red mud with acids of 5M $H_2SO_4$ and 9M HCI with the ratio of 1/10(g/mL) at $85^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$, respectively. In addition. the removal experiments of heavy metal ions($Pb^{2+}$, $Cd^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, $Zn^{2+}$, $Cr^{3+}$), turbidity and phosphate phosphorus($PO_4{^{3-}}-P$) in aqueous solutions were also studied in various experimental conditions. As a result, the developed coagulants are found to show a good removal performance of heavy metal ions. turbidity and phosphate phosphorus in aqueous solutions.
In this study, red mud/fly ash based geopolymer adsorbents (RFGPA) were prepared with calcination temperatures of 200, 400, and 600 ℃, and the effects of these calcination temperatures on the adsorption of methylene blue (MB) were investigated. In addition, the prepared RFGPA was characterized using X-ray fluorescence (XRF), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and Brunauer-EmmettTeller (BET) analysis. The results of the adsorption kinetics of MB at RFGPA prepared calcination temperatures indicated that the adsorption equilibrium of MB was reached after about 72 h. From the results of the adsorption isotherm, we verified that the degree of adsorption increased with increasing MB concentrations. In addition, the adsorption amount (Q) of MB decreased with an increase in calcination temperature. The experimental adsorption isotherm data were well fitted to the Freundlich and Sips equations compared to the Langmuir equation. In order to verify the effects of photocatalytic decomposition (C/C0) of MB on Fe2O3 present in prepared RFGPA, the degree of decomposition of MB was examined under dark and visible conditions. Results indicated that the decomposition of MB in visible conditions was about 3.0 times faster than that in dark conditions.

This study used persimmon juice, shuliang, and mud to develop the color of hanji fabrics. Persimmon juice and shuliang were used to perform single and mixing dyeing with heat treatment using the pad-dry-cure (PDC) method. Next, mud dyeing was performed, and the hanji fabrics dyed with persimmon juice and shuliang were developed into Yellow Red (YR) Munsell colors with very low values and chroma. Through scanning electron microscopy, the persimmon juice and shuliang were observed to be evenly treated on the hanji fabrics using the PDC method. Furthermore, the presence of iron ions in the dyed fabrics was confirmed using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry analysis. The stiffness of the fabrics dyed with persimmon juice was the greatest, while it gradually decreased for the fabrics treated with mixing and mud dyeing. With mixing dyeing, the colorfastness to washing improved to grade 4, whereas with mud dyeing, the colorfastness to alkaline sweat greatly improved to grade 4~4-5. Based on these findings, this study confirmed that it is possible to develop hanji fabrics with differentiated textures and colors while ensuring practical colorfastness through mixing and mud dyeing.
