  • This study was performed about color-contained mud to provide fun and diversity for the event of mud self massage as a core program of Boryeong Mud Festival which has become one of representative festivals in Korea. Adjusting its own lower brightness of mud and based on the primary study performed about the expressivity of yellowish colors, inorganic colors (oxidized steel in red, ultra marine pink, ultra marine blue, chrome oxide green) were added for the development of colored mud in diverse colors on the basis of Korean traditional colors. It had been judged about each expressivity of color by methods of colormeter, naked eyes inspection and feeling of usage, etc. For the color decided, it had been examined about the coloring when it got wet with the cleaning condition so that it can be used for the event of mud self massage as a program of Boryeong Mud Festival to increase diversity of the Festival and also attempted to develope colored mud to show Korean traditional colors.

  • In this study, we evaluated the distribution, habitat characteristics, and diet of two Korean freshwater turtle species (Chinemys reevesii, Pelodiscus sinensis) and an invasive turtle species (Trachemys scripta elegans) in the area surrounding the Seomjin River and the Nam River. We surveyed basking turtles in multiple locations along a 48-km stretch of the Seomjin River and in 99 reservoirs distributed along the Seomjin and Nam rivers from June to September, 2009. We observed 8 and 6 red-eared turtles in 3 reservoirs and at 3 sites in the Seomjin River, respectively, and 33 Reeve's turtles in 9 reservoirs. There were also 28 and 16 mud turtles detected at 15 sites along the Seomjin River and in 8 reservoirs, respectively. Among the 14 biotic and abiotic habitat characteristics that might influence the abundance of freshwater turtles in reservoirs, only the distance between a reservoir and the nearest residential areas was correlated negatively with abundance. With regard to the diet, all Reeve's and red-eared turtles investigated were determined to forage on water snails. Some turtles also foraged on vegetation and aquatic invertebrates. Additionally, we found fish in the stomach of one of the Reeve's turtles, and dragonflies in the stomachs of two red-eared turtles.

  • This study is about the mortar in which fine aggregate is substituted by low-carbon eco-friendly inorganic composite prepared by addition of alkali accelerator in industrial by-products such as blast furnace slag, red mud and silica fume as a replacement for cement. Results of experiments on flow and strength properties in mortar of inorganic composite according to replacement rate of fine aggregate showed that amount of air and table flow decreased as replacement rate of fine aggregate about inorganic composite got higher. Also, it's shown that the compressive strength was the highest at replacement rate 50% of fine aggregate about inorganic composite.

  • Recently, as the policy of state that it is the low carbon green growth is promoted, the effort for reducing the CO2 gas generation ejected from the construction industry in the cement production is continued. That is, the method using the mineral admixtures including the silica fume and red mud, silica fume and etc. it is the industrial byproduct with the method solving the exhaustion problem of the environmental contamination settlement and natural resources, the great quantity as the cement substitute material is examined. Accordingly, in this research, the strength characteristic of the curing body differentiating the curing method of the ternary system inorganic binder using the blast furnace slag and red mud, silica fume and etc. as the cement substitute material tried to be examined.

  • The toxicity of red mud (RM) pellets for water purification was evaluated using Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata and Daphnia magna in a lab-scale experiment. According to the algal growth inhibition test, both specific growth rates and relative growth rates of P. subcapitata decreased, and the growth inhibition rates increased ($R^2=0.97$, p<0.001) as the concentration of RM pellets in the aqueous solution increased (>1.6 g/L). Also, based on the acute toxicity evaluation test on D. magna, toxic unit (TU) values ranged between 0.00 and 2.83, and increased with an increase in the concentration of RM pellets in the aqueous solution. A correlation analysis indicated that the pH of RM pellets was statistically correlated with TU values ($R^2=0.77$, p=0.02). The environmental implication from this study is that the concentration of RM pellets in an aqueous solution needs to be lower than 4.4 g/L to keep the maximum permissible TU value less than 1.0.

  • Recycling method of red mud, byproduct from the aluminium manufacturing process, and paper sludge was investigated in order for them to be utilized as the adsorbent for the removal of volatile organic components(VOCs). Either high density polyethylene(HDPE) or low density polyethylene(LDPE) was added to facilitate the manufacture of adsorbents. The utilization of HDPE in the adsorbents increased the adsorption capacity due to the good physical properties, such as, BET and true density, compared with LDPE. BET values of the manufactured adsorbents were much lower than the commercial activated carbon ($10^{-2}-10^{-3}$). It may be due to the fact that the time for decomposition of the paper sludge was not enough during the manufacturing of adsorbents. But the specific adsorption capacity of the manufactured adsorbents (mole adsorbed per unit surface area) had much higher value than the commercial activated carbon (10-100). Therefore, it is important that BET of manufactured adsorbents needs to be increased to obtain the same adsorption capacity as the commercial activated carbon.

  • Geopolymers were made by mixing IGCC slag and aluminum smelted waste and their properties were compared with those of IGCC slag based geopolymers. When two raw materials were mixed, the highest compressive strength was obtained at 1.78 of Si/Al ratio. Because the change in compressive strength and density was not so sensitive by the change in Si/Al ratio; that is, the permissible range of Si/Al ratio mixing ratio is broad, it was speculated this broad permissible range would be advantageous for commercialization. The Compressive strength of geopolymers including red mud was higher than that of IGCC based ones and the safety was confirmed by TCLP test. Therefore, it was concluded that the making geopolymers by mixing red mud not only enhances the properties of geopolymers but also gives a recyclability as safe construction materials.
