Total lipid contents were 0.58∼3.00% in 9 kinds of brown algaes, 0.47∼2.16% in 5 kinds of red algaes and 0.55∼2.99% in 2 kind of green algeas, respectively. Fatty acid compositions of the algaes were determined by gas liquid chromatography. Total polyenes and n-3 polyenes of linoleic acid(18:3), stearidonic acid(18:4), eicosapentaenoic acid(20:5) and docosahexaenoic acid(22:6) were 3.88∼57.57% and 1.46∼25.67% in the brown algaes, 5.30∼39.75% and 1.17∼21.91% in the red algaes, and 7.76∼19.27% and 3.67%∼10.61% in the green algaes, respectirely. The fatty acid contents and compositions of total polyenes and n-3 polyenes were vary different in the algae groups and sepecies.
The red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren, 1972 (Hymenoptera: Formicidae: Myrmicinae) was discovered in Busan sea port, Korea. Only one colony was found and then removed rapidly by Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency.
This study is to examine the origin of Andong sikhe and to introduce the making process of it. The following facts are found after consulting literature and doing field-work to find out the origin of Andong sikhe. Andong sikhe is a kind of so-sikhe develolped as a sweet beverage, the making process of which is to ferment the mixture of boiled rice, radish slices, and red pepper extract with malt liquid. So-sikhe is made by fermenting with malt the mixture of boiled rice, radish slices, red pepper powder and flavorings such as a shallot, a garlic and salt, and o-sikhe is made by adding fish to the ingredients used to make so-sikhe. So-sikhe is distributed on the coastal areas of the East Sea and the inland areas adjacent to them as o-sikhe is. It is presumed that so-sikhe was introduced to Korea by the same way as o-sikhe was introduced eastward from the regions around Thailand by sea. It is also presumed that Andong sikhe has been developed into its present type after the second half of the 18th century when red pepper was introduced to Korea and then widely used.
Measurements of ocean color from space since 1970s provided vital information with reference to physical and biogeochemical properties of the oceanic waters. The utility of these data has been explored in order to map and monitor highly toxic/or harmful algal blooms (HABs) that affected most of coastal waters throughout the world due to accelerated eutrophication from human activities and certain oceanic processes. However, the global atmospheric correction and bio-optical algorithms developed for oceanic waters were found to yield false information about the HABs in coastal waters. The present study aimed to evaluate the potential use of red tide index (RI) method, which has been developed by Ahn and Shanmugam (2005), for mapping of HABs in Korean and neighboring waters. Here we employed the SSMM to remove the atmospheric effect in the SeaWiFS image data and the achieved indices by RI method were found more appropriate in correctly identifying potential areas of the encountered HABs in Korean South Sea (KSS) and Chinese coastal waters during 1999-2004. But the existence of high absorbing and scattering materials greatly interfered with the standard OC4 algorithm which falsely identified red tides in these waters. In comparison with other methods, the RI approach for the early detection of HABs can provide state managers with accurate identification of the extent and location of these blooms as a management tool.

This paper describes the development of moving watched chamber. For the most part, the watched chamber have been located in the inner-bay. But, there are many problems of sea-water pollution. Therefore, the watched chamber must be relocated to undeveloped coastal area. The watched chamber which is located in the bay has a bit of damage by bad weather. But, the moving watched chamber would be exposed to bad water. It is desirable to improve the system of chamber. If we make a good design of the moving watched chamber with studying of waves and hydrodynamics, it would be possible to culture fish at the coastal sea area. When a fixed system is changed into a movable one, we can obtain the following advantages: 1. The possibility of diminishing the sea water pollution, easying the overcrowded state in a inner-bay farm, and relieved of limitation caused by bad conditions such as waves, red tides and terrains. 2. It would be easy not only to move the watched chamber system in accordance with weather conditions or occurrence of red tides, but also to select good sites for watched chamber fishes. 3. Transportation and good supervision with the automated design system can results with the effectiveness which increases the amount of aquatic products.
Farmed red sea breams, Pagrus major, were fed for 60 days with pellets containing different concentrations of benzo(a)pyrene (0, 0.2, 2, 20 mg/kg) to generate a biomarker of the chemical toxicity in the fish. The fish exposed to the chemical concentrations did not show any significant difference in the weight gain, conditioning, factor, and hepatosomatic index. However, some haematological parameters, such as glucose, calcium, magnesium, GOT (glutamic oxalate transaminase), and GPT (glutamic pyruvate transaminase) were influenced by the chemical exposure. Of them, two enzymes, GOT and GPT, increased significantly 60 days after the exposure in a way of concentration dependence (P<0.05). In the study of ecotoxicological biomarker, sensitivity to adverse environments is one of the key available factors. The fish changes in GOT and GPT were an earlier and reliable sign of the fish response against the chemical exposure, rendering the two enzymatic factors as a useful biomarker at least to benzo(a)pyrene exposure in the farming waters.
Eco-physiological research and the control of Cochlodinium polykrikoides was carried out to elucidate eco-physiological characteristics of red tide organism through culture experiment depending on the condition of photon irradiance. Oxygen consumption of C. polykrikoides was high with a value of 1.12 mg/L/hr in the dark compared with that of 0.13 mg/L/hr at $100{\mu}mEm^{-2}s^{-1}$. DO values in a circular chamber with the lapse of time in seawater containing C. polykrikoides were declined in the dark period. DO values of seawater containing C. polykrikoides in the dark were declined from 7.01 mg/L to 2.65 mg/L in 30 cm depth and from 7.01 mg/L to 6.63 mg/L in 5 cm depth depending on the depth of circular culture vessel. Olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus and file fish, Stephanolepis cirrhifer exposed to Cochlodinium showed the separation of the lamella epithelium from gill filament, which disrupted the respiratory process at the gill level.
More than 90% of cultured fish is consumed by sliced raw fish which is usually an eating out menu in South Korea. In order to develop the aquaculture industry in Korea, It is very important to know whether consumers can differentiate each species or not and how consumers recognize each species by certain criteria. for example taste, seasonal preference. The purpose of this study is to understand the competitive relationship through positioning studies of each species by the selection attributes. A total of 221 consumers were surveyed in korea. This study adapted multidimensional scaling(MDS) analysis to explore how consumers position sliced raw fish species based on selection attributes. This study has produced perceptual maps of sliced raw fish market. Empirical data was collected from sliced raw fish consumers in Korea. The results of MDS analysis reveal that 7 species are divided into 3 groups(flat fish, black rock fish), (red sea bream, salmon, tuna), (sea bass, gray mullet). In this study flat fish and black rock fish are perceived as safe, familiar, good value species. Red seabream, salmon, tuna are perceived as luxurious species. Sea bass and gray mullet are perceived as unfamiliar species.
The larval occurrence of the red snow crab Chionoecetes japonicus was investigated near Dokdo in the East Sea of Korea, and the larval timing of the genus Chionoecetes in world oceans was reviewed. C. japonicus larvae were collected seasonally at 12 stations in February, May, August, and November in 2011. A Bongo net with a 303 mesh was deployed with a double oblique tow. Larvae appeared from February to August, but no larvae were found in November. Zoea I occurred at nine stations with a few zoea II in February, and were found until August. The larval densities in February were high near the northern. In May, megalopa were found at eight stations with a few zoea II. No larvae were caught in November. The larval abundance in the research area peaked in February. Overall, the larval duration of the genus Chionoecetes in the world's oceans persisted for a long time, and Chionoecetes larvae occurred during the warm season in each area. The cold temperature at the sea bottom, where gravid females are found, may prolong larval production along the distribution range of the genus Chionoecetes.

In 2009, a systemic megalocytivirus infection associated with high mortality was detected for the first time in cultured starry flounder Platichthys stellatus in Korea. Diseased starry flounder had pale bodies and gill coloring and enlarged spleens. Histopathological examinations revealed basophilic enlarged cells in various organs of diseased starry flounder. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was performed on tissue samples using three published primer sets developed for the red sea bream iridovirus. PCR products were detected for all primer sets, except 1-F/1-R, which are registered by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE). The part of the gene corresponding to the full open reading frame encoding the viral major capsid protein (MCP) was amplified by PCR. PCR products of approximately 1,581 bp were cloned, and the nucleotide sequences were analyzed phylogenetically. The MCP gene of the starry flounder iridovirus, designated SFIV0909, was identical to that of the turbot reddish body iridovirus (AB166788).
