  • The amount of $CO_2$-silicate bonded waste foundry sand(WFS) occurred in Korea is over 800,000 ton per year. WFS, as a by-product, is generated through manufacturing process of foundry may affect our environmental contamination, The reason is that WFS has been buried itself not less than 90% out of total WFS. So, it can give damage on the ground of contamination in soil and underwater. Therefore, it is necessary to establish the method recycling WFS because of being intensified waste management law. In this study, we performed the research with respect to harmful component analysis, the qualities of WFS mortar and concrete mixed with WFS. As the results the specific gravity of WFS is the same as that of natural aggregate while unit weight and percentage of solids of WFS are smaller than those of it. But it is found that WFS can be used by substituting WFS for natural aggregate after control of poor grade of WFS. The flowability of mortar and concrete with WFS is inferior to those of natural aggregate, and the setting time of concrete with WFS is faster than that with only natural aggregate, On the contrary, the bleeding of concrete with WFS is shown good result, and compressive and tensile strength of concrete substituted WFS for 30% are higher than those with only natural aggregate regardless of elapsed time.

  • The high pure tin production was conducted from crude-tin containing waste solder by electro-refining process. The electro-refining process maintained at 0.2V produced tin with purity of 99.98%, whereas a little increase of voltage to 0.3 V resulted tin purity of 99.92%. The high pure tin of 3N in the present process was produced by fixing the voltage at 0.3V. Considering the high pure tin production, the current density was maintained within $100-120A/m^2$ with current efficiency of 94%. Addition of sulfuric acid of 20 ~ 25 g/L to the electrolyte solution was performed in order to keep Pb (lead) concentration below 100 mg/L in the final tin product. The anode slime generated during electro refining process was analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) study to understand the phases of impurities in it. It detected the presence of Cu and Ag in the slime as in the form of $Cu_6Sn_5$, $Ag_3Sn$, whereas Pb occurred as $PbSO_4$ compound.

  • Anhydrous magnesium chloride, dehydration product from magnesium chloride hydrate is a general raw material to prepare electrolytic magnesium. However, the dehydration is not trivial and can be accompanied by hydrolysis leading to the production of undesirable hydroxy chloride compounds of magnesium. Therefore, dehydration process is actually the most complicated and hardest in the electrolysis methods for the production of magnesium. In this work, the influence of dehydrating temperature has been studied at the temperature range from $200^{\circ}C$ to $600^{\circ}C$ in air and HCl gas atmosphere individually to compare the results. With increasing of dehydration temperature MgOHCl and MgO were obtained in air. On the other hand, when the temperature was increased above $300^{\circ}C$ anhydrous magnesium chlorides were prepared in HCl gas atmosphere. Anhydrous magnesium chloride was formed at near $300^{\circ}C$ and completely crystallized at about $500^{\circ}C$. All of the HCl used as atmosphere gas in the dehydration was recovered as hydrochloric acid solution at a water vessel up to 41% by weight at $20^{\circ}C$.

  • Dewatering process to remove water from pigment sludge was important in the diverse aspects of the improvement of product quality, curtailment of the drying cost and the transportation. It was difficult to dewater pigment particles with the mechanical forces because the size was fine under $5{\mu}m$. Thermal filter press dewatering equipment composed of squeezing plate and a fixed heating plate was developed to improve the dewaterability of pigment the sludge as supplying the heat from the fixed heating plate to the cake. Several tests that estimate the dewaterability for pigment sludge as with or without squeezing process and the difference of dewatering time was conducted with this equipment. Dewaterability of thermal dewatering under squeezing process was increased about 20% compared with non squeezing process. Under squeezing process, thermal dewatering tests changing dewatering time with 70 and 80 minute were conducted respectively. The water content of cake was more reduced at dewatering time of 80 minute compared with 70 minute, and dewatering velocity was also decreased, which caused the productivity of thermal filter press to drop. It was observed that clogging of filter cloth didn't almost occur because the liquid was discharged from cake layer easily. In this research, it was resulted that the squeezing process and long dewatering time were effective to improve the dewaterability of pigment sludge. So, this thermal filter press equipment was useful for dewatering the fine particle sludge like pigment.

  • This study investigated a utilization technology of light burned dolomite. light burned dolomite ($CaMg(CO_3)_2$) generated in furnace (steel manufacturer) is an alternative to quick lime. Using light burned dolomite has an effect on reducing the consumption of fluorite slag MgO concentration in supersaturated solution by prolonging the life of softening effect. Armophous MgO, not containing periclase is formed by firing dolomite under $800^{\circ}C$. It has larger surface area and higher reactivity than periclase, and also shows better expansion effect than quicklime. Due to those effects, therefore, armophous MgO produced from light burned dolomite is used as an alternative expansion agent in mortar. In the experiment, characteristics of light burned dolomite were compared to those of existing expansion agents such as anhydrite and quicklime. Then, each expansion and shrinkage rates were measured over a period of about 3 months in both of 1m Jis mold at labscale and apartment mortar flooring at field scale. In the result, it was observed that light burned dolomite in mortar flooring more compensates for the expansion and shrinkage rates than the existing expansion agents, showing low expansion rate of below 0.05% and also decreases the crack.

  • This study was conducted to search possibilities of the use of sludge from waterworks industry in the manufacturing of red clay bricks. Different compositions of the sludge were added into the raw materials of the bricks and required engineering characteristics of the manufactured bricks were examined. Compressive strength, plasticity, and surface absorption of the recycled bricks were analyzed and were compared with the bricks quality standard rules and regulation for quality assurance of the product. Compressive strength of the bricks made in a ratio 75% clay, 5% sludge and 20% silica was found 261.3 $kg_f/cm^3$ and that was comparable with first grade bricks standard. Compressive strength of the bricks made in a ratio 70% clay, 10% sludge, and 20% silica was found 249.9 $kg_f/cm^3$ while it was decreased to 217.3 $kg_f/cm^3$ when bricks were made in a ratio 65% clay, 15% sludge and 20% silica. However, these values of compressive strength were in agreement with the bricks quality standard. Surface absorption of the bricks made by the mixing of 20% silica with varying amount of sludge, i.e., 5%, 10%, and 20% was found 10%, 9.65% and 10.92% respectively. These values satisfied the quality standard of bricks of grade 1 and 2. Recycling of proper amount of sludge in bricks making could produce bricks of high engineering characteristics.

  • Nickel laterite ore is classified into two principal ore types: saprolite (silicate ore) and limonite (oxide ore). Saprolite-type ore characterized by high magnesia and silica contents is treated by pyrometallurgy process. On the other hand, limonite-type ore is subjected to hydrometallurgy process to produce nickel products. Hydrometallurgy process requires that a raw material to meet the demands that Si+Mg contents lower than 10% and Fe content over than 40%. It is therefore required that separation of saprilite-type ore to use nickel laterite ore as a raw material for hydrometallurgy process. In this study, separation of sparolite-type ore and limonite-type ore from nickel laterite ore from New Caledonia has been tried by dry classification. The results show that -5 mm size fraction and +5 mm size fraction of the nickel laterite ore contains mainly limonite-type ore and saprolite-type ore, respectively. To understand the moisture content of the raw ore on the dry classification, nickel laterite ore with different moisture contents of 23.0% and 9.1% were subjected to the dry classification. The results show that drying of the ore makes the separation more efficient as the amount of the fine product, that can be subjected to hydrometallurgy process without further separation or drying operations, was increased.

  • When the multi-stage combustion process is applied to the cement kiln to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions in the cement industry, oxidation/reduction section that can increase combustion efficiency by reducing NOx to NO and completely burning unburned materials is essential In this study, when applied the oxidation/reduction system of the cement kiln preheater and calciner, the optimal oxidation/reduction calcination crisis that can secure the quality stability of the final product, cement clinker, was to be observed macroscopically, and the mass change of raw materials according to the burning conditions, decarbonation rate, and calcination rate were investigated. The results showed that the thermal decomposition of raw materials tends to be promoted in the oxidation condition rather than in the reduction condition, and that the thermal decomposition of limestone, which has a relatively high CaO content, is carried out later than that of cement raw meal, which is thought to be caused by the CO2 fractionation in the kiln. The thermal decomposition properties of raw materials according to oxidation/reducing burning condition showed a relatively large difference in temperature range lower than normal limestone themal decomposition temperature, which is thought to be expected to improve the thermal efficiency of raw materials according to the formation of oxidation condition in the section 750℃ of burning temperature. However, for this study, lab scale. Because there is a difference from the field process as a scale study, it is deemed necessary to verify the actual test results of the pilot scale.
