  • The study aims that high quality recycled sand by wet manufacturing system can be used in practical way through basic material property. The basic material property test was done by 4 categories, dry manufacturing system (1) tandem and (2) parallel, wet manufacturing system (3) large capacity and (4) small capacity. RS-IV is the final production of (1) to (4) method, it is tested via KS F 2573 (recycled fine aggregate). RS-IV is satisfied with 4 items, those are absolute dry density, 0.08mm sieve throughput, clay lump amount, and organic impurity substance content. However, absorptivity item has problem in (1) and (2) method, (3) and (4) method are confirmed with norms 5% low. Also, the production quality of wet manufacturing system is better than dry manufacturing system in absolute dry density, absorptivity, 0.08mm sieve throughput, and clay lump amount.

  • Fine recycled-concrete aggregates(RCAs) instead of natural sand were tested for a foundation material under sewage conduit system, which was evaluated based on foundation settlement at various conditions. To obtain this applicability of RCAs, the settlement behavior was simulated with FLAC program based on the difference of material properties, and immediate settlement behaviors and the change of material properties under the simulated drainage conditions also tested at the various loading conditions in the laboratory. Finally, large-scale settlement test in the field was conducted to prove the above feasibilities. Subsequently, the amount of settlement from the FLAC simulation was calculated under $5.0{\times}10^{-6}\;m$ and the extent of settlement and property changes (porosity, permeability and waster absorption) was not noticeable from the laboratory experiments. Also, settlement monitoring from the field experiment showed the consistent results with laboratory experiments except for the consolidation settlement(=5 mm) of the round below the foundation. In summary, adopting fine RCAs as a foundation material for sewage conduit system was resonable based of geotechnical point of view.

  • Recently, the amount of disposed construction materials like demolished concrete is growing fast and the shortage of natural concrete aggregate is becoming serious. Therefore, recycling of aggregate extracted from the demolished concrete is getting important and use of the recycled aggregate for concrete has been seriously considered. However, the use of the recycled aggregate even for low performance concrete is very limited because recycled aggregate which contains large amount of old mortar has very low quality. Therefore, removing the paste sticked to the recycled aggregate is very important in the manufacturing of high quality recycled aggregate. We have studied a series of research according to complex crushing method, which is removed the ingredient of cement paste from recycled fine aggregate using both the low speed wet abrasion crusher as mechanical process and the acid treatment as chemical processes. This paper is to analyze the quality of the recycled fine aggregate produced by those complex method and investigate optimum manufacturing condition for recycled fine aggregate by the design of experiments. The experimental parameters considered are water ratio, coase aggregate ratio, and abrasion time. As a result, data concerning the properties of recycled sand were obtained. It was found that high quality recycled fine aggregate could be to obtain at the condition of the fifteen minute of abrasion-crusher time and the over 1.0 of recycled coarse aggregate ratio.

  • This paper presents the geotechnical characteristics of the soil mixed with various waste(waste soil) in the landfill. The physical and mechanical tests were conducted to find out the waste soil. The tests include the gradation, consistency tests, shear and compression and the consolidation tests using both the Rowe cell and the constant ration stress. The analyses of the test results show the waste soil belongs to the well graded sand(SW) in the laboratory and sand-gravel(SG) to fine sand(SF) in the field monitoring based on the unified classification soil system. The shear strength is increasing with increasing the shear displacement, however, the peak of the shear strength does not appear through the test and there is no distinct peak value of the strength obtained. The compression index(Cc) results in as increasing the amount of the sludge included and the compression index is proportional to the sludge included, which means more settlement is expected. The hydraulic conductivity of the waste soil ranges between $1.6{\times}10^{-5}cm/sec$ and $1.8{\times}10^{-7}cm/sec$.

  • Reuse of recycled aggregate from demolished concrete structure is beneficial and necessary from the viewpoint of environmental preservation and effective utilization of resources. The most important mechanical properties of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) are the compressive strength, the tensile and the flexural strengths, the bond strength and the elastic modulus of such concrete. In particular, the stress-strain relation and fracture process of RAC in compression is especially important in theoretical and numerical analysis as well as engineering design of RAC structures. In this paper, to clarify the characteristics of fracture process in RAC, acoustic emission(AE) method is applied to detect micro-cracking in concrete under compression. From AE parameters, it is found that cracking and fracture behaviors in recycled aggregate concrete fairly differ from that of normal and recycled sand concrete.

  • Recently it is difficult to secure sand used in the improvement of soft ground, and so it is necessary to find alternative materials. For this reason many researchers are studying and trying to find new substitute materials. One of the materials is considered as converter slag by wind fracture which is generated in the production of steel manufacture by electric circuit. It is environment friendly since it is a recycled material and economical since it is cheaper than sand. To investigate the applicability of converter slag by wind fracture as the alternative material such as vertical drains, it is necessary to check the drainage effect of this in the field construction. In order to attain an successful design it is important to predict problems encountered in field construction. Accordingly, in this study the laboratory test was executed under different conditions in advance of applying of the field. A total of 4 cases including slag, sand+slag, pack slag and sand as vertical drains was conducted, and at the base of the laboratory test the field test was executed and analyzed.

  • This work has been initiated to find possibility whether recycled fine aggregate can be used as a source of aggregate for structural concrete or not. Two-stage mixing approach was chosen in order to maximize strength potential from recycled fine aggregate. Moisture content of the recycled fine aggregate was changed, and two different types of two-stage mixing approaches were applied to produce cement mortar. The strength of mortar made of 100% recycled fine aggregate by two-stage mixing approaches was compared to that of mortar made of 100% washed sea sand. According to the results, the effect of moisture content on compressive strength was observed from low water cement mortar(W/C 0.3). In case of W/C 0.5 cement mortar, no clear relationship was observed between moisture content and strength development. It was found that two-stage mixing approach has a potential to increase the strength of mortar made of 100% recycled fine aggregate. In case of modified version of two-stage mixing approach which first prepares cement paste and pours recycled fine aggregate into the cement paste, was more effective to increase the strength of mortar made of 100% recycled fine aggregate.

  • In this paper, the effect of the type and amount of fibers on the physicomechanical properties of concrete containing fine recycled refractory brick (RRB) and natural aggregate subjected to elevated temperatures was investigated. For this purpose, forta-ferro (FF), polypropylene (PP), and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers with the volume fractions of 0, 0.25, and 0.5%, as well as steel fibers with the volume fractions of 0, 0.75, and 1.5% were used in the concrete containing RRB fine aggregate replacing natural sand by 0 and 100%. In total, 162 concrete specimens from 18 different mix designs were prepared and tested in the temperature groups of 23, 400, and $800^{\circ}C$. After experiencing heat, the concrete properties including the compressive strength, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), weight loss, and surface appearance were evaluated and compared with the corresponding results of the reference (unheated) specimens. The results show that using RRB fine aggregate replacing natural fine aggregate by 100% led to an increase in the concrete compressive strength in almost all the mixes, and only in the PVA-containing mixes a decrease in strength was observed. Furthermore, UPV values at $800^{\circ}C$ for all the concrete mixes containing RRB fine aggregate were above those of the natural aggregate concrete specimens. Finally, regarding the compressive strength and UPV results, steel fibers demonstrated a better performance relative to other fiber types.
