  • The Network can be easily damaged in the mobile computing environment. Mobile Support Station (MSS) which supports the Mobile Host(MH) could also be unstable too. Therefore, when a critical error occurs the repairing cost can be high. For stable repair, the hand-off strategy should be considered to save the continuing message and checkpoint information, and to reduce the cost of network repair. In this paper, we propose the Switching Trickle(ST) strategy which reduces the repairing cost for the MH's mobility. ST strategy changes the way which stores the information in connection with the number of write events(r) that occur from the hands-off strategy. Accumulated cost by increased mobility has been simulated too. From the results of simulation, the proposed strategy has shown more cost effective than the conventional strategy. The proposed strategy also has shown very supportive in saving checkpoint and message log information stably.

  • In database management systems(DBMSs), partial rollback is a useful facility that cancels part of the executed operations upon user's requests without a total rollback. Many relational DBMSs(RDBMSs) provide this facility, However, object-orientccd DBMSs (OODBMSs) cannot utilize the previous recovery scl18lne of partial rollback usccd in (RDBMSs) since, unlike RDBMSs, they use a dual buffer consisting of an object buffer and a page buffer. Therefore, a new recovery scheme is required that rolls back the data efficiently in the dual buffer. We propose four partial rollback schemes in OODBMSs that use a dual buffer. We classify the proposed schemes into the single buffer based partial rollback scheme and the dual buffer based partial rollback scheme according to the number of buffers used for partial rollback processing. We further classify them into Uthe page buffer based partial rollback scheme, 2)the object buffccr based partial rollback scheme, 3)the dual buffer based partial rollback scheme using soft log, and 4)the dual buffer based partial rollback scheme using shadows. We evaluate the performance by mathematical analysis and experiments. The results show that the dual buffer based partial rollback scheme using shadows provides the best performance.

  • These days, digital forensic technologies are being used frequently at crime scenes. There are various electronic devices at the scene of the crime, and digital forensic results of these devices are used as important evidence. In particular, the user's action and the time when the action took place are critical. But there are many limitations for use in real forensics analyses because of the short cycle in which user actions are recorded. This paper proposed an efficient method for recovering deleted user behavior records and applying them to forensics investigations, then the proposed method is compared with previous methods. Although there are difference in recovery result depending on the storage, the results have been identified that the amount of user history data is increased from a minimum of 6% to a maximum of 539% when recovered user behavior was utilized to forensics investigation.

  • Our previous finding that pre-initiation treatment of indole-3-carbinol (I3C) represents a chemopreventive effect in dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA)-induced mammary carcinogenesis has prompted us to test the global expression of genes at an early stage. Rats were continuously fed 300 ppm I3C in their diet at 6 weeks of age and were injected with DMBA at 7 weeks of age, and were sacrificed at 8 weeks of age. Global gene expression analysis using oligonucleotide microarrays was conducted to detect altered genes in DMBA- or DMBA plus I3C-treated mammary glands. Altered genes were identified by fold changes of 1.2 and by t-test (P<0.05) from the log ratios of the hybridization intensity of samples between control (Group 1) and DMBA (Group 2), and from those of samples between DMBA (Group 2) and DMBA plus I3C (Group 3). From these genes, we chose altered genes that were up- or down-regulated by DMBA treatment and recovered to the control level by I3C treatment. For early stage of carcinogenesis, I3C treatment induced the recovery to normal levels of several genes including cell cycle pathway (cyclin B2, cell division cycle 2 homolog A), MAP signaling pathway (fibroblast growth factor receptor 1, platelet derived growth factor receptor, beta polypeptide), and insulin signaling (protein phosphatase 1, regulatory (inhibitor) subunit 3B and flotillin 2), which were up-regulated by DMBA treatment. In addition, I3C treatment induced the recovery to normal levels of several genes including those of MAPK signaling (transforming growth factor, beta receptor 1 and protein phosphatase 3, catalytic subunit, beta isoform), which were down-regulated by DMBA treatment. These results suggest that the targeting of these genes presents a possible approach for chemoprevention in DMBA-induced mammary carcinogenesis.

  • In RNC of IMT-2000, main control processors such as ASP, ACP and OMP are responsible for call control function, and the high reliability and real-time property should be provided for it. So, the study of real-time fault-tolerant for it is needed. In this paper, we proposes an Task based duplication method, in which Tasks in active side operated on message unit and send the updated data to standby side after operation, log in the message to standby side for recovery during take-over. This scheme decreases the dual down and the complexity of synchronization procedure, and performs the synchronization more exactly because Tasks control the synchronization of system. This paper also proposes the fault detection and the fault handing method for effective implementation of Task based duplication. This scheme focus on increasing the fault detection rate and intercepting originally that fault data is send to standby side.

  • Main memory database systems use the different implementation techniques to sturucture and organize the user dta and system catalogs, since traditional database systems are optimized for the characteristics of disk storage environment. We present, in this paper, the design considerations for our main memory database system $ALTIBASE^{TM}$ that is currently applied to the time-critical applications. We focus on the design issues of storage manager in $ALTIBASE^{TM}$. The major components are introduced, and features and characteristics of transaction management and recovery method are described. We also present the database replication mechanism and its conflict resolution mechanism for high availability and performance. In order to evaluate our transaction performance, we show various experimental reports as measured by the TPS.

  • Recently, Software DSMs continue to improve its performance and scalability As Software DSMs become attractive on larger clusters, the focus of attention is likely to move toward improving the reliability of a system. A popular approach to tolerate failures is message logging with checkpointing, and so many log-based rollback recovery schemes have been proposed. In this work, we propose a remote logging scheme which uses the volatile memory of a remote node assigned to each node. As our remote logging does not incur frequent disk accesses during failure-free execution, its logging overhead is not significant especially over high-speed communication network. The remote logging tolerates multiple failures if the backup nodes of failed nodes are alive. It makes the reliability of DSMs grow much higher. We have designed and implemented the FT-KDSM(Fault Tolerant KAIST DSM) with the remote logging and showed the logging overhead and the recovery time.

  • Drilling at unconsolidated layer can make the aquifer disturbed and reduce a productivity of groundwater well. Surge block and air surging were applied to a pumping well located in Jeungsan-ri, Changnyung-gun, to improve a well efficiency by removing clogging and fine-grained slime. Two experimental log-linear equations, $y_1=-0.1769\;ln(x_1)+0.4960$ and $y_2=-84.3358\;ln(x_2)+512.8162$, were proposed in this site, in which $x_1$ and $x_2$ are the number of surging event, $y_1$ is the amount of slime, and $y_2$ is a recovery time of groundwater level after air surging. Well loss exponent (P) decreased after surging, from 3.422 to 1.439, and the groundwater inflow from aquifer happened in all directions around a well with gradually increasing the homogeneity in a local aquifer's hydraulic property. It was revealed that long-term well development should be done in the pumping well which is located in unconsolidated sediments to increase a well productivity.
