Most studies on recommender systems to evaluate recommendation performances focus on offline evaluation methods utilizing past customer transaction records. However, evaluating recommendation performance through real-world stimulation becomes challenging. Moreover, such methods cannot evaluate the duration of the recommendation effect. This study measures the personalized recommendation (stimulus) effect when the product recommendation to customers leads to actual purchases and evaluates the duration of the stimulus personalized recommendation effect leading to purchases. The results revealed a 4.58% improvement in recommendation performance in the online environment compared with that in the offline environment. Furthermore, there is little difference in recommendation performance in offline experiments by period, whereas the recommendation performance declines with time in online experiments.
There have been emerging many use-cases applying recommendation systems especially in online platform. Although the performance of recommendation systems is affected by a variety of factors, selecting appropriate features is difficult since most of recommendation systems have sparse data. Conventional matrix factorization (MF) method is a basic way to handle with problems in the recommendation systems. However, the MF based scheme cannot reflect non-linearity characteristics well. As deep learning technology has been attracted widely, a deep neural network (DNN) framework based collaborative filtering (CF) was introduced to complement the non-linearity issue. However, there is still a problem related to feature embedding for use as input to the DNN. In this paper, we propose an effective method using singular value decomposition (SVD) based feature embedding for improving the DNN performance of recommendation algorithms. We evaluate the performance of recommendation systems using MovieLens dataset and show the proposed scheme outperforms the existing methods. Moreover, we analyze the performance according to the number of latent features in the proposed algorithm. We expect that the proposed scheme can be applied to the generalized recommendation systems.
The purpose of this study is to incorporate telemarketing processes to improve telemarketing performance. For this application, we have attempted to mix the model of machine learning to extract potential customers with personalisation techniques to derive recommended products from actual contact. Most of traditional recommendation systems were mainly in ways such as collaborative filtering, which predicts items with a high likelihood of future purchase, based on existing purchase transactions or preferences for products. But, under these systems, new users or items added to the system do not have sufficient information, and generally cause problems such as a cold start that can not obtain satisfactory recommendation items. Also, indiscriminate telemarketing attempts can backfire as they increase the dissatisfaction and fatigue of customers who do not want to be contacted. To this purpose, this study presented a multi-purpose hybrid recommendation algorithm to achieve two goals: to select customers with high possibility of contact, and to recommend products to selected customers. In addition, we used subscription data from telemarketing agency that handles insurance products to derive realistic applicability of the proposed recommendation system. Our proposed recommendation system would certainly solve the cold start and scarcity problem of existing recommendation algorithm by using contents information such as customer master information and telemarketing history. Also. the model could show excellent performance not only in terms of overall performance but also in terms of the recommendation success rate of the unpopular product.
Collaborative filtering is one of the most common methods that e-commerce sites and Internet information services use to personalize recommendations. Collaborative filtering has the advantage of being able to use even sparse evaluation data to predict preference scores for new products. To date, however, no in-depth investigation has been conducted on how the data sparsity effect in customers' evaluation data affects collaborative filtering-based recommendation performance. In this study, we analyzed the sparsity effect and used a hybrid method based on customers' evaluations and purchases collected from an online bookstore. Results indicated that recommendation performance decreased monotonically as sparsity increased, and that performance was more sensitive to sparsity in evaluation data rather than in purchase data. Results also indicated that the hybrid use of two different types of data (customers' evaluations and purchases) helped to improve the recommendation performance when evaluation data were highly sparse.

With the rapid increase of social network usage, there are emerging trends of adopting social information among online users in building recommendation system. This study aims to investigate whether the additional usage of social information can improve recommendation performance in recommendation system and how much the improvement can be different according to the product involvement level. As an experiment result, social information does not affect positively to the recommendation accuracy but affect significantly to the recommendation quality. Also social information contributed more sensitively to the improvement of recommendation quality in high product involvement domain.

This study proposes a deep learning-based evolutionary recommendation model for heterogeneous big data integration, for which collaborative filtering and a neural-network algorithm are employed. The proposed model is used to apply an individual's importance or sensory level to formulate a recommendation using the decision-making feedback. The evolutionary recommendation model is based on the Deep Neural Network (DNN), which is useful for analyzing and evaluating the feedback data among various neural-network algorithms, and the DNN is combined with collaborative filtering. The designed model is used to extract health information from data collected by the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, and the collaborative filtering-based recommendation model was compared with the deep learning-based evolutionary recommendation model to evaluate its performance. The RMSE is used to evaluate the performance of the proposed model. According to the comparative analysis, the accuracy of the deep learning-based evolutionary recommendation model is superior to that of the collaborative filtering-based recommendation model.
The Collaborative Filtering (CF) is one of the popular techniques for personalization in e-commerce storefronts. For CF-based recommendation, every customer needs to provide subjective evaluation ratings for some products based on his/her preference. Also, if an e-commerce site recommends a new product, some customers should rate it. However, there is no in-depth investigation on the impacts on recommendation performance of two number of ratings, i.e. the number of ratings of an individual customer and the number of ratings of an item, even though these are important factors to determine performance of CF methods. In this study, using publicly available EachMovie data set, we empirically investigate the relationships between the two number of ratings and the performance of CF. For the purpose, three analyses were executed. The first and second analyses were performed to investigate the relationship between the number of ratings of a particular customer and the recommendation performance of CF. In the third analysis, we investigate the relationship between the number of ratings on a particular item and the recommendation performance of CF. From these experiments, we can find that there are thresholds in terms of the number of ratings below which the recommendation performances increase monotonically. That is, the number of ratings of a customer and the number of ratings on an item are critical to the recommendation performance of CF when the number of ratings is less than the thresholds, but the value of the ratings decreases after the numbers of ratings pass the thresholds. The results of the experiments provide insight to making operational decisions concerning collaborative filtering in practice.
One of the problems in developing a collaborative recommendation system is the scalability. To alleviate the scalability problem efficiently, enhancing the performance of the recommendation system, we propose a new recommendation system using feature selection. In our experiments, the proposed system using about a third of all features shows the comparable performances when compared with using all features in light of precision, recall and number of computations, as the number of users and products increases.
Recommendation system is one way of implementing personalized service. The collaborative filtering is one of the major techniques that have been employed for recommendation systems. It has proven its effectiveness in the recommendation systems for such domain as motion picture or music. However, it has some limitations, i.e., sparsity and scalability. In this research, as one way of overcoming such limitations, we proposed the stepwise collaborative filtering method. To show the practicality of our proposed method, we designed and implemented a movie recommendation system which we shall call Step_CF, and its performance was evaluated using MovieLens data. The performance of Step_CF was better than that of Basic_CF that was implemented using the original collaborative filtering method.
Collaborative filtering is one of popular techniques for personalized recommendation in e-commerce sites. An advantage of collaborative filtering is that the technique can work with sparse evaluation data to predict preference scores of new alternative contents or advertisements. There is, however, no in-depth study about the sparsity effect of customer's evaluation data to the performance of recommendation. In this study, we investigate the sparsity effect and hybrid usages of customers' evaluation data and purchase data using an experiment result. The result of the analysis shows that the performance of recommendation decreases monotonically as the sparsity increases, and also the hybrid usage of two different types of data; customers' evaluation data and purchase data helps to increase the performance of recommendation in sparsity situation.
