  • The feasibility of separating Pichia stipitis from a fermentation broth using a hollow fiber membrane was evaluated. The permeate flux was affected by such parameters as cell concentration, pH, content of antifoam agents, suction pressure, and recirculation rate. A minor effect of temperature on the flux loss was also observed. A microcomputer-aided backflush was proven effective in alleviating membrane fouling and allowing long term separation of P. stipitis from a fermentation broth.

  • Low temperature diesel combustion was achieved via a combination of late injection timing ($8.5^{\circ}$ CA BTDC to $0.5^{\circ}$ CA BTDC) and heavy exhaust gas recirculation (37% to 48%) with ultra low sulfur Swedish diesel fuel in a 1.7L common rail direct injection diesel engine. When injection timing is retarded at a certain exhaust gas recirculation rate, the particulate matter and nitrogen oxides decease simultaneously, while the hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide increase. Hydrocarbon speciation by gas chromatography using a flame ionization detector reveals that the ratio of partially burned hydrocarbon, i.e., mainly alkenes increase as the injection timing is retarded and exhaust gas recirculation is increased. The two most abundant hydrocarbon species are ethene which is a representative species of partially burned hydrocarbons, and n-undecane, which is a representative species of unburned hydrocarbons. They may be used as surrogate hydrocarbon species for performing a bench flow reactor test for catalyst development.

  • Nitrogen oxides (NOx) have recently been very influential in the generation of ultrafine dust, which is of great social interest in terms of improving the atmospheric environment. Nitrogen oxides are generated mainly by the reaction of nitrogen and oxygen in air in a combustion gas atmosphere of high temperature in a combustion apparatus such as thermal power generation. Recently, research has been conducted on the combustion that recirculates the exhaust gas to the cylindrical burner by using a piping using a Coanda nozzle. In this study, three types of burners were carried out through computational fluid analysis. Case 1 burner with the outlet of the combustion gas to the right, Case 2 burner with both sides as gas exit, Case 3 burner with left side gas exit. The pressure, flow, temperature, combustion reaction rate and distribution characteristics of nitrogen oxides were compared and analyzed. The combustion reaction occurred in Case 1 and Case 2 burner in the right direction with combustion gas recirculation inlet and Case 3 burner in the vicinity of mixed gas inlet. The temperature at the outlet was about $100^{\circ}C$ lower than that of the other burners as the Case 2 burner was exhausted to both sides. The NOx concentration of Case 1 burner at the exit was about 20 times larger than that of the other burners. From the present study, it could be seen that it is effective for the NOx reduction to exhaust the exhaust gas to both side gas exits or to exhaust the exhaust gas to the opposite direction of inlet of recirculation gas.

  • Oil-film flow visualizations and three-dimensional flow measurements have been conducted in the downstream region of a butterfly-type valve used in air-conditioning systems, with the variation of a disk open angle. The flow visualizations in the flow symmetry plane show that there are a pair of counter-rotating separation/recirculation zones as wall as two jet-like near-wall flows. These flow disturbances are strongly depends on the disk open angle. Based on the flow visualization, a qualitative flow model is suggested in the near-field and downstream region of the valve disk. For a small disk open angle, the mean velocities and turbulent intensities have relatively small values in the near-field of the valve disk, but they do not show uniform distributions even in some downstream region. With an increment of the disk open angle, mean velocity variations and turbulent intensities are greatly increased in the immediate downstream region, but uniform distributions are quickly resumed as departing from the valve disk. The mass flow rate remains nearly constant for the disk open angles less than 30 degrees, meanwhile it strongly depends on the disk open angles between 45 and 75 degrees. The pressure loss is found to be about zero for the disk open angles less than 45 degrees, but is substantially increased for those larger than 75 degrees.

  • Since the 1960's, exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) has been used effectively in spark ignition(SI) engines to control the exhaust emissions of the oxides of nitrogen(NOx). The most important requirements for the application of EGR systems to conventional SI engines are controllable flow rate and good dynamic response. In order to evaluate the characteristics of the electronic EGR valve, a test bench which is consisted of blower, heater, air flow meter and driving unit for electronic EGR valve was set up to simulate engine operating conditions. During the tests, the valve actuation parameters were controlled and the valve lifts and flow rates were measured to infer the characteristics of EGR valve. The results confirmed the capabilities of mathematical analysis and it seems that the correction for the valve lift and potentiometer output is necessary to achieve precise control of EGR rates.

  • Two and Three dimensional numerical simulations have been carried out to understand the combustion characteristics of LNG-fueled gas turbine combustor for power generation. Focus of the study was given to the influences of different fuel composition of imported and domestic natural gases with the flow conditions selected from the gas turbine operation data. Reacting flow characteristics of the swirl stabilized natural gas combustor were understood from the comparison of the two-dimensional and three-dimensional results. The thermal influences of different natural gases were very small and the fuel composition and flow rate were considered to be tuned well.

  • Experiments were conducted to show the characteristics of the flow on unventilated parallel plane jets. Measurements of mean velocity components and turbulent intensities were carried out with a particle image velocimetry. The measurements range of these experiments was Reynolds number of 5300 based on the nozzle width and the cases of nozzle-to-nozzle distance were 4, 6, 8, and 10 times the width of the nozzle. Results show that a recirculation zone with a sub-atmospheric static pressure was bounded by the inner shear layers of the individual jets and the nozzles plate. The positions, where maximum value of mean turbulent intensities and mean turbulent kinetic energy show, were at the same position with the merging point. The spread of jets in the merging region increases more rapidly than that of jets in the converging and the combined region. As nozzle-to-nozzle distances were increased, it was shown that merging and combined lengths were shorter.

  • This study is carried out in order to evaluate the performances of the Reynolds stress turbulence models such as SSG and GL models in the calculation of separated flow over backward-facing stepp. In addition, two slow return-to-isotropy models, YA and Rotta models combined with rapid part of SSG model are also tested. The finite volume method is used to discretize the governing differential equations, and the power-law scheme is used to approximate the convection terms. The SIMPLE algorithm is used for pressure correction in the governing equations. The results show that SSG model gives the better prediction near the reattachment point than GL model. In cases that the rapid term of SSG model is combined with Rotta and YA slow models, the results show the better predictions of stress components in recirculation zone, but indicate inaccuracy in the predictions of mean velocity.

  • The combustion characteristics of a partially premixed flame in a dump combustor were studied to determine the effects of hydrogen enrichment in propane. Bluff-body was used for flame stabilization. Fuel mixtures containing a hydrogen mole fraction ranging from 0.1 to 0.5 were burnt at ambient pressure within a quartz chamber. Tests were carried out keeping the total reactant flow rate by adjusting the fuel and air flow rates. The fluctuations of pressure were measured by piezoelectric pressure sensor. The instantaneous flame structure and OH chemiluminescence images were described by High-speed Intensified Charged Coupled Device (HICCD) camera and Intensified Charged Coupled Device (ICCD) camera. The present results show that hydrogen enrichment in fuel changed the location of primary reaction zone from inner recirculation zone to turbulent shear layer and pressure signal. The reason is that chemical aspects take precedence over flow aspects in the hydrogen-enriched flame.

  • The performance of oxygen combustion with $CO_2$ feeding was investigated in a pyrex tube furnace. The inverse type multi-hole burner was used for improving mixing and wide operating range. It introduced oxygen, fuel, and oxygen, respectively, from center tube to outer tubes. Oxygen combustion characteristics with excess oxygen ratio, oxygen feeding ratio, and $CO_2$ feeding flow rate were studied to optimize the operating condition and to apply the oxygen combustion with recirculation of flue gas to a real furnace. This paper presents results on the effect of $CO_2$ feeding flow rate on the structure of the flames and concentrations of NO and CO emissions. The visible flame length was shortest due to well mixing between fuel and oxygen when the oxygen feeding ratio was 0.25. The NO emission was reduced drastically regardless of excess oxygen ratio when the $CO_2$ feeding flow rate was larger than 15 lpm. The CO emission is varied by changing the $CO_2$ feeding flow rate but the CO emission characteristics is highly affected by excess oxygen ratio. When the excess oxygen ratio is below $\lambda=1.1$, the CO emission increased as the $CO_2$ feeding flow rate increased.
