  • As the fundamental studies for the population of Myagropsis myagroides, the effect of plant hormones on the regeneration for the primary, secondary lateral and receptacle segments were investigated. At high concentration($10^{-3}M\;and\;10^{-4}M$) of plant hormones inhibits from regenerating and lower concentrations advance the regeneration. The most effective concentrations of hormones on the primary lateral segments are $10^{-6}M$ of kinetine, IAA, NAA and $10^{-5}M$ of 2, 4-D in order, meanwhile in the secondary lateral segment $10^{-6}M$ of NAA, $10^{-8}M$ of kinetine, $10^{-7}M$ of IAA, and $10^{-5}M$ of 2, 4-D in order. The net regeneration rates of primary and secondary lateral segments which are measures by the wet weight are $124.1\%\;and\;228.9\%$, respectively. The influence of apical dominanace on the primary lateral segments decreases, on the other hand, increases in the secondary lateral segments because of the distance from the apex, Especially, the secondary lateral segments treated with below $10^{-5}M$ plant hormone are matures with receptacle of small branching by the regenerated branching.

  • In CNG (Compressed natural gas) fuel supply line, whose main components are receptacle and check valve are used to charge high pressure gas to the tank of NGV (Natural gas vehicle). It is reported that the seal is separated occasionally form valve seat and results in blockage of gas flow. In this paper, MARC is used to investigate the reasons of seal separation and suggest design improvements. The static gas pressure distributions acting on the seal which calculated using FLUENT are considered to investigate accurate seal deformation behaviors. Deformed seal shapes are obtained for various amounts of seal interference and its location, gas pressure distributions and Young's modulus of the rubber used. The results showed that the reasons of seal separation problems are verified theoretically, and suggested examples of new design method. Therefore the present numerical methods can be applied in designing and performance analysis of rubber seals adopted in high pressure fluid machineries.

  • Phenotypic plasticity was examined in the economically and ecologically important brown alga Ascophyllum nodosum in southwestern Nova Scotia, considering specifically how nutrient loading affected its vegetative and reproductive features. To determine this, we examined morphometric changes in A. nodosum from two sites receiving direct effluent impacts from a land-based finfish aquaculture facility and from two control sites, approximately 2 km away from the aquaculture facility in opposite directions. Fronds from test sites were significantly younger than from control sites (5 y vs. 8 y); however, fronds from farm sites were significantly larger (219 g vs. 90 g) because of their higher growth rates. Thalli from farm sites had greater reproductive potential, as shown by numbers of receptacle initials (797 initials vs. 281 initials). These results suggest limited nutrient inflows from land-based aquaculture may positively affect adjacent Ascophyllum populations by inducing higher growth rates. We conclude that the coordination of effluent management from land-based aquaculture with natural resource harvesting of A. nodosum may be beneficial. Further study is necessary to determine the limits of nutrient loading for this potentially beneficial outcome.

  • The occurrence of a corona is that electrical discharge due to the heterogeneity that occurs when an electrical field is concentrated in an electrode due to a cusp formed on said electrode. Wire treatment at the end of a 154[kV] dead end clamp for end users accelerates the occurrence of corona, which in turn leads to power loss and noise. In this study, the characteristics of the corona which occurs between porcelain insulators and support clamps of overhead lines used in 154[kV] power receiving facilities for end users were investigated. The corona, which cannot be identified by one common method, was measured utilizing a UV image camera. A risk assessment for fire damage and its status was suggested. The stress distribution of the electrical field by length of bare wire was suggested by means of the finite element method(FEMLAB). As a result, it was found to affect a porcelain insulators. These results can be utilized for the enhancement of clamp installation and safety in power facilities.

  • Under 'The Design Street' Project, one of the urban environment improvement projects of Seoul, the facilities on the street have been greatly varied in terms of design. In addition, the municipal authority has pushed each district to develop its own identity based on the integrated design of the city. This study was aimed to propose a design which could solve the current problem in street furniture in terms of environmental improvement through an analysis on current street conditions in "Y" District as a part of Seoul Design Street Project. It has attempted to propose 11 street furnitures based on the basic strategy of 'Soft City' which has been promoted by Seoul City in accordance with the Seoul Public Facility Guidelines as 1. Airy Design, 2. Integrated Design, 3. Collaborative Design and 4. Sustainable Design. Among them, for the total design in Seoul six facilities - kiosk, manhole, traffic signal controller, public phone, road sign and waste receptacle were proposed by Seoul City have been accepted. For local differentiation, on the contrary, five items - planter bench, bollard, lifter, bike rack and fence have been newly designed and proposed. Furthermore, it is essential to carry out systematic supervision and continuous management on the detail design and construction of current regional design development projects.

  • It is shown that receptacle tissue of the rose of sharon can serve as an effective biocatalyst by the construction of a potentiometric membrane electrode with response and selectivity for arginine. Electrodes using this tissue in conjunction with $NH_3$ gas sensing probes yield good response to arginine in $10^{-1}M to 10^{-3}M$ range and retain activity for a least 1 weeks. The arginine-selective membrane electrode using tissue slices of the rose of sharon have good selectivity in presence of other amino acids. The optimum conditions are pH 8.0, $25^{\circ}C$ and $20 {\mu}m$ thickness of slices in 0.1 M phosphate buffer solution and $K_m$ values is $6.4 {\times} 10^{-6}(M)$.

  • An analysis of the vegetative and reproductive anatomy of Sargassum lapazeanum was performed based on extensive sampling in three areas within its geographical range: a) San Juan de la Costa, b) Punta Calera, c) Punta Machos. Material was collected from low intertidal to subtidal populations and evaluated based on variations present within and between populations. Our goal was to comprehensively analyze the features of the vegetative and reproductive anatomy of this species. Our observations showed that this species has cauline, which is anatomically composed of three tissues layers. This species is dioic, with male and female conceptacles in the same receptacle but with different maturation times. The present study confirmed the presence of cauline in this species; this structure was previously described for some species in the Gulf of California, such as Sargassum horridum, and for several species in Japan. This structure could be responsible for the growth of primary branches and may also generate a new plant. This trend might explain the perennial nature of this species at the population level. Field and laboratory experiments could help to delimit the ecophysiological conditions under which this structure starts to develop.
