Study on Timing Failures in Cyber-Physical Systems

  • Cyber-physical systems (CPSs) can solve real problems by utilizing closely connected resources in the cyber world. Most problems arise because the physical world is uncertain and unpredictable. To address this uncertainty, information pouring from numerous devices must be collected in real-time, and each interconnected device must share the information. At this time, CPS must meet timing-related techniques and strict timing constraints that can deliver accurate information within predefined deadlines in order to interact closely beyond simply connecting the cyber and physical worlds. Timing errors in safety-critical systems, such as automobiles, aviation, and medical systems, can lead to catastrophic disasters. In this paper, we classify timing problems into two types: real-time delay and synchronization problems. The results of this study can be used in the entire process of CPS system design, implementation, operation, verification, and maintenance. As a result, it can contribute to securing the safety and reliability of CPS.

  • The real time control system for FMS(Flexible Manufacturing System) is implemented at this paper. To achieve this goal, the Colored and Timed Petri-Net model is constructed and used to simulate the real time operation of FMS. Using the Colored and Timed Petri-Net model, evaluating any kind of FMS plant is possible. On-line shceduler, intelligent dispatcher, real time monitor and the simulation model of shop floor are contructed using LAN communication, relational database system in this paper. Finally, this real time control system is applied to the FMS/CIM center at Seoul National University.

  • The hydraulic loading system real-time simulator using a PC and I/O interface board is developed to simulate the dynamic characteristics of hydraulic loading system in real time. The simulator receives the digital on-off control signals generated by the operator through the D/I channels, updates the state and output variables of the hydraulic loading system responding to the input signals and draw the moving pictuters of the lift cylinder, lift arm and loading box on the PC monitor in real time. Also, the operator can observe the displacement and pressure of cylinder, the rotatinal angle, reaction force, and safety factors of lift arm representing the operation of hydraulic loading system through the PC monitor in real time. The real-time simulator can be a very useful tool to design industrial dynamic systems and feel the goodness of the system operation since the operator can observe the moving pictures of the operating system in real time as he operates the real time simulator.

  • One of the most important design factor for the image tracker is the speed of the data processing which allows real-time operation of the system and provides reasonably accurate performance at the same time. Use of powerful DSP alone does not guarantee to meet such requirement. In this paper, a simple efficient algorithm for real-time multi-target image tracking is suggested. The suggested method is based on a recursive centroiding technique and color table look-up. This method has been successfully implemented in a image processing system for Micro-Robot Soccer Tournament(MIROSOT). This tracker can track positions of a ball, 3 enemies, and 3 agents at the same time. The experimental results show that the processing time for each frame of image is less than 7ms, which is well within the 60Hz sampling interval for real-time operation.

  • The real-time industrial network, often referred to as fieldbus, is an important element for building automated manufacturing systems. Thus, in order to satisfy the real-time requirements of field devices, numerous fieldbus protocols have been announced. But the application of fieldbus has been limited due to the high cost of hardware and the difficulty in interfacing with multi-vendor products. Therefore, as an alternative to fieldbus, the computer network technology, especially Ethernet (IEEE 802.3), is being adapted to the industrial environment. However, the crucial technical obstacle for Ethernet is its non-deterministic behavior that makes it inadequate for industrial applications where real-time data have to be delivered within a certain time limit. Recently, the development of switched Ethernet shows a very promising prospect for industrial application due to the elimination of uncertainties in the network operation resulting in much improved performance. This paper focuses on the application of the switched Ethernet for industrial communications. More specifically, this paper presents an analytical and experimental performance evaluation of the switched Ethernet and a case study about networked control system.

  • In this paper, real-time polygon generation algorithm of 3D point cloud data and texture mapping for tele-operation is proposed. In a tele-operation, it is essential to provide more highly realistic visual information to a tele-operator. By using 3D point cloud data, the tele-operator can observe the working environment from various view point with a reconstructed 3D environment. However, there are huge empty space in 3D point cloud data, since there is no environmental information among the points. This empty space is not suitable for an environmental information. Therefore, real-time polygon generation algorithm of 3D point cloud data and texture mapping is presented to provide more highly realistic visual information to the tele-operator. The 3D environment reconstructed from the 3D point cloud data with texture mapped polygons is the crucial part of the tele-operation.

  • With the expansion of research and development for the CIM and the IMS, the importance of introducing the communication network is being increased. This paper presents an implementation of robot workcell by using Fieldbus and investigates data operation of the robot workcell. Through experiments, the operations of periodic and real-time data, and non-periodic real-time data are studied. Also, the relationship between the network transmission rate and the monitoring results from the sensor is analyzed.

  • In this paper, we propose a simple algorithm to calculate the numbers of the passing cars by using an image processing sensor for the digital black and white images with 256 tone level. Shadow is one of the most troublesome factor in image processing. By differencing the tone level, we cannot discriminate between the body of the car and its shadow. In our proposed algorithm, the area of the shadow is excluded by recognizing the position of each traffic lane. For real-time operation and simple calculation, two lines of the tone level are extracted and the existences of cars are recognized. In the experimental application on a high-way, the recognition rate of the real-time operation is more than 94%.

  • The real-time simulator of a pneumatic actuation system that is composed of differential PWM signal generator, charge solenoid valve, discharge solenoid valve, actuator, load, and rotational potentiometer is developed using a DSP board and a PC. The simulator receives the control signals from the external controller through the A/D converter, updates the state and output variables of the Pneumatic actuation system responding to the input signals every sampling time, and sends out the output signals through the D/A converter in real time. The user can observe the displacements, velocities, pressures, and mass flows representing the operation of pneumatic actuation system through the PC monitor in real time. Also the user can see the moving images between the pistons and rotating arm realistically in real time. The accuracy of the real-time simulator is verified by the good agreement of the real-time simulation results and the experimental results of the pneumatic actuation system.
