  • RTLS (Real-time locating systems) are used for tracking the location of people or assets in real time. In this system, RTLS readers continuously communicate with RTLS tags for measuring time or ranges and location engine tries to calculate accurate location of tags. However, when we attempt to apply this system to real world, the non-line-of-sight(NLOS) problem can be critical to the system performance because of the obstacles. In this paper, we suggest a new location estimation method for an NLOS environment using a reader-selection strategy. We have implemented all components of the locating system and carried out experiments in a test-bed. The accuracy of the system is 50% better than that of the existing general locating system.

  • A real time transporter locating system for shipyard has been implemented through the GNSS and IMU sensor. There are a lot of block movements by transporters at the shipyard, which need to be controlled and monitored for conforming to the shipbuilding process. For the precise and safe transporter motion at the yard, a locating system has been developed by using the GNSS and IMU sensors for the transporter. There are several obstacles of the GPS signals for locating the transporter at the yard, such as, buildings and metal structures. To overcome the weakness of the GPS signal transmission, the IMU data have been properly integrated together. The performance of the proposed real time block locating system has been verified through the real experiments with transporters carrying blocks at a shipyard.

  • In this paper an ESPRIT-based super-resolution time delay estimation algorithm is developed for real-time locating system (RTLS) and its performance is analyzed in various multipath environments. The performance of the existing correlation method for time delay estimation seriously degrades in multipath environments where the relative time delays of multipath signals are less than a PN chip. To solve the problem we shall develop a frequency domain super-resolution time delay estimation algorithm using the ESPRIT, the most representative super-resolution direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation algorithm, and analyze its performance in various multipath environments.

  • In a port terminal, containers are stored and transshipped by yard tractors and crane vehicles. For operation efficiency of the terminal, location information of these vehicles is an essential factor. However, most of port terminals try to estimate location of these assets using indirect methods such as event tracking of shipping or unshipping containers. Because these kinds of events are rarely occurred, location of the event includes seriously locating error compared to a real location of vehicle. In this paper, we propose a real-time asset tracking system to obtain accurate and reliable location of terminal assets. The proposed system overcomes a location estimation error caused by container stacks which interrupt wireless communication. In order to mitigate uncertainty and increase accuracy of location estimation, we designed hardwares and multi-step locating system to resolve additional preblems. We implemented system components, and installed these at a port environment for evaluation. The result shows superiority of the system that the accuracy is approximately 5.87 meters (CEP).

  • Time synchronization between distributed embedded systems in the Real Time Locating System (RTLS) based on Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) is one of the most important factors to consider in system design. Clock jitter error between each system causes many difficulties in maintaining such a time synchronization. In this paper, we implemented a system to synchronize clocks between FPGA based distributed embedded systems using the recovery clock of CDR (clock data recovery) used in high speed serial communication to solve the clock jitter error problem. It is experimentally confirmed that the cumulative time error that occurs when the synchronization is not performed through the synchronization logic using the CDR recovery clock can be completely eliminated.

  • Recently, as the size of construction projects are getting bigger and higher, more effective managing methods are required in management areas such as duration reduction, cost reduction and quality management. In the current construction industry, conjunction with IT(Information Technology) is being noticed as a solution to support these needs. Various IT solutions such as Bar Code, Personal digital assistant(PDA), global positioning system(GPS), radio frequency identification(RFID) are being developed. In this research, among the various IT solutions, the Real Time Locating System(RTLS) which is acknowledged as a technology with high applicational potential is analyzed. Based on this analysis, a locating system to apply in construction sites is developed and validated. The locating system is developed to prevent construction disasters through real-time management of workers and equipment, which enables effective application in the area of construction safety management. Moreover, applications of the locating system in many different areas like construction material realtime monitoring, construction automation, construction quality management, maintenance management are expected.

  • The construction industry has witnessed an exponential growth of drones used in the field over the past few years. Likewise, the field of maintenance has paid increasing attention to using drones with a view to improving the efficiency of condition checks in high-rise buildings and major space. Although operators manipulate drones to inspect buildings at present, drones are expected to autonomously move around without operators in a few years. Also, for indoor maintenance, it is important for drones to find accurate locations, which is implemented by real-time locating systems(RTLS). Yet, the accuracy of RTLS varies across the types of systems and indoor settings, which warrants a locating system suitable for indoor space and a location correction system designed to improve the accuracy. Hence, the current study investigated the accuracy of real-time locating systems(RTLS) for the maintenance of indoor space of buildings with drones and delved into the methods of correcting the location information to improve the accuracy of RTLS.

  • The main goal of construction projects from the past has been enhancing efficiency by reducing cost and time. but, seeing the current condition of safety management of many construction companies nowadays, it is true that not much attention has been paid to safety management for a long time. However, there are paradigm shift from the cost and term of works to safety management in the construction industry, from this circumstance the safety management is evaluated more importantly. Though less accident happens compared to past, the accidents are getting greater because construction projects nowadays are bigger and more complex and monetary loss from the accidents are increasing. Also, the severity is getting greater and even fatal. For this reason, more improved safety management is very necessary. Therefore, we are to propose more efficient system for safety management in this thesis. Technical parts for developing system include many technique such as Real Time Locating system, and other techniques like Monitoring module based on BIM, Data Mart, Alarm are also applied together. Through this system, in the construction site, safety management is performed more effectively and widely because the system can manage the human resource and fluid situation. Also, safety manager can conduct more systematically and advanced safety management through human resource dominated safety management.

  • In this paper a super-resolution time delay estimation algorithm is developed for real-time locating systems (RTLSs) that employ a direct-sequence spread spectrum technique, along with its performance analysis in multipath environments. The classical correlation method provides relatively good performance in line-of-sight (LOS) environments but its performance seriously degrades in multipath environments, especially when signals are spaced closer than a PN chip. Therefore we shall develop a super-resolution time delay estimation algorithm that may estimate the time delays of multipath signals even in closely spaced multipath environments using the MUSIC algorithm for direction-of-arrival estimation and analyze its performance by applying the algorithm to the ISO/IEC 24730-2.1 RTLS system.

  • In this paper the super-resolution time delay estimation algorithms based on eigen-analysis are developed for spread spectrum signals along with their comparative performance analysis. First, we shall develop super-resolution time delay estimation algorithms using the representative eigen-analysis based AOA (angle-of-arrival) estimation algorithms such as MUSIC, Minimum-Norm, and ESPRIT, and apply them to the ISO/IEC 24730-2.1 real-time locating system (RTLS) employing a direct sequence spread spectrum (DS-SS) technique to compare their performances in RTLS environments. Simulation results illustrate that all the three algorithms can resolve multipath signals whose delay differences are even smaller than the Rayleigh resolution limit. Simulation results also show that MUSIC and Minimum-Norm provide a similar performance while ESPRIT is inferior to both algorithms in RTLS environments.
