  • The process of berthing/deberthing operations for entering/leaving vessels in Busan northern harbor was analyzed and evaluated by using an integrated VTS(vessel traffic service) system installed in the ship training center of Pukyong National University, Busan, Korea. The integrated VTS system used in this study was consisted of ARPA radar, ECDIS(electronic chart display and information system), backup(recording) system, CCTV(closed-circuit television) camera system, gyro-compass, differential GPS receiver, anemometer, AIS(automatic identification system), VHF(very high frequency) communication system, etc. The network of these systems was designed to communicate with each other automatically and to exchange the critical information about the course, speed, position and intended routes of other traffic vessels in the navigational channel and Busan northern harbor. To evaluate quantitatively the overall dynamic situation such as maneuvering motions for target vessel and its tugboats while in transit to and from the berth structure inside a harbor, all traffic information in Busan northern harbor was automatically acquired, displayed, evaluated and recorded. The results obtained in this study suggest that the real-time tracking information of traffic vessels acquired by using an integrated VTS system can be used as a useful reference data in evaluating and analyzing exactly the dynamic situation such as the collision between ship and berth structure, in the process of berthing/deberthing operations for entering/leaving vessels in the confined waters and harbor.

  • Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA) is a channel access scheme adopted by the IEEE 802.11e draft standard for QoS-enabled wireless local area networks. It classifies traffic into separate Access Categories (ACs) and achieves service differentiation by allowing each AC to have its own values of channel access parameters. This paper proposes a scheme to dynamically adapt the EDCA parameters to traffic environment so that they both maximize the throughput of non real-time traffics and meet the delay and throughput constraints of real-time traffics. For this purpose, we develop a design algorithm for efficient exploration of the EDCA parameter space. Using the algorithm, we derive a Pareto curve fur delay-throughput trade-off in each anticipated traffic environment. The Pareto database can then be used to optimally adjust the parameter according to the traffic environment and administrative policies. Simulation results show that compared with the default parameter configuration, the proposed scheme is better for delay, throughput guarantee and can improve the throughput of non real-time traffics by 12% on average.

  • In this paper, we propose P-SRA (Proposed Simplified Resource Allocation) algorithm for efficient resource allocation for real time traffic in MIMO-OFDMA (Multiple Input Multiple Output - Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access) systems with V-BLAST (Vertical-Bell laboratories LAyered Space-Time coding) detector. The proposed P-SRA scheme employs efficient 3 step resource allocation algorithm with plain V-BLAST and no H-ARQ, however it achieves comparable performance of a MIMO-OFDMA system utilizing error compensated V-BLAST and H-ARQ IR scheme.

  • As the community antenna television (CATV) networks becomes ubiquitous, instead of constructing an entirely new broadband network infrastructure, it has emerged as one of the rapid and economic technologies to interconnecting heterogeneous network to provide broadband access to subscribers. How to support ubiquitous real-time multimedia applications, especially in a heavy traffic environment, becomes a critical issue in modern CATV networks. In this paper, we propose a time guaranteed and efficient upstream minislots allocation algorithm for supporting quality-of-service (QoS) traffic over data over cable service interface specification (DOCSIS) CATV networks to fulfill the needs of realtime interactive services, such as video telephony, video on demand (VOD), distance learning, and so on. The proposed adaptive fast expansion algorithm and the loading statistics with dynamic swapping algorithm have been shown to perform better than that of the multimedia cable network system (MCNS) DOCSIS.

  • This paper attempts to maximize the operator's revenue while simultaneously providing a multi-constraint, multi-hop and deterministic QoS provisioning for real time traffic in IEEE 802.16m based 4G networks. The optimal solution to such a problem is NP-complete and therefore not feasible to be solved in a tolerable polynomial time. For this reason, we also provide a simple price based greedy heuristic to be used along with the admission control. Simulation results for different QoS schemes show that the heuristic produces a revenue that is very close to the optimal revenue, and is far more aggressive than the size based and other common algorithms that are computationally feasible to be implemented in IEEE 802.16m.

  • Short-term traffic flow prediction plays an important role in intelligent transportation systems (ITS) in areas such as transportation management, traffic control and guidance. For short-term traffic flow regression predictions, the main challenge stems from the non-stationary property of traffic flow data. In this paper, we design an ensemble cascading prediction framework based on extremely randomized trees (extra-trees) using a boosting technique called EET to predict the short-term traffic flow under non-stationary environments. Extra-trees is a tree-based ensemble method. It essentially consists of strongly randomizing both the attribute and cut-point choices while splitting a tree node. This mechanism reduces the variance of the model and is, therefore, more suitable for traffic flow regression prediction in non-stationary environments. Moreover, the extra-trees algorithm uses boosting ensemble technique averaging to improve the predictive accuracy and control overfitting. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that extra-trees have been used as fundamental building blocks in boosting committee machines. The proposed approach involves predicting 5 min in advance using real-time traffic flow data in the context of inherently considering temporal and spatial correlations. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed method achieves higher accuracy and lower variance and computational complexity when compared to the existing methods.

  • By sending periodically short bursts of traffic to reduce legit transmission control protocol (TCP) traffic, the low-rate denial of service (LDoS) attacks are hard to be detected and may endanger covertly a network for a long period. Traditionally, LDoS detecting methods mainly concentrate on the attack stream with feature matching, and only a limited number of attack patterns can be detected off-line with high cost. Recent researches divert focus from the attack stream to the traffic anomalies induced by LDoS attacks, which can detect more kinds of attacks with higher efficiency. However, the limited number of abnormal characteristics and the inadequacy of judgment rules may cause wrong decision in some particular situations. In this paper, we address the problem of detecting LDoS attacks and present a scheme based on the fluctuant features of legit TCP and acknowledgment (ACK) traffic. In the scheme, we define judgment criteria which used to identify LDoS attacks in real time at an optimal detection cost. We evaluate the performance of our strategy in real-world network topologies. Simulations results clearly demonstrate the superiority of the method proposed in detecting LDoS attacks.

  • Connection admission control(CAC), which decides whether or not to accept a new call request, is one of the most Important preventive congestion control techniques in asynchronous transfer mode(ATM) networks. To develop a practical CAC scheme, first we propose a "Modified Cell Loss Probability MP${\nu}"$, which is based on "Virtual Cell Loss Probability P${\nu}"$, taking into account mean burst duration of input traffic source and buffer size in ATM networks. MP${\nu}"$ computes more accurate cell loss probability than P${\nu}"$ without increasing computational complexity, since P${\nu}"$ is formulated simply form the maximum and the average cell rate of input traffic. P${\nu}"$ is overestimated as compared to the real cell loss probability when the mean burst duration is relatively small to the buffer capacity. Then, we Propose a CAC scheme, based on "Modified Virtual Bandwidth(MVB)" method, which may individualize the cell loss probabilities in heterogeneous traffic environments. For the proposed approach, we define the interference intensity to identify interferences between heterogeneous traffic sources and use it as well as MP${\nu}"$ to compute MVB. Our approach is well suitable for ATM networks since it provides high bandwidth utilization and guarantees simple and real time CAC computation for heterogeneous traffic environments.heterogeneous traffic environments.

  • The traffic accident reports that are generated by the Traffic Broadcasting Networks(TBN) are unstructured data. It, however, has the value as some sort of real-time traffic information generated by the viewpoint of the drives and/or pedestrians that were on the roads, the time and spots, not the offender or the victim who caused the traffic accidents. However, the traffic accident reports, which are big data, were not applied to traffic accident analysis and traffic related research commonly. This study adopting text-mining technique was able to provide a clue for utilizing it for the impacts of traffic accidents. Seven years of traffic reports were grasped by this analysis. By analyzing the reports, it was possible to identify the road names, accident spot names, time, and to identify factors that have the greatest influence on other drivers due to traffic accidents. Authors plan to combine unstructured accident data with traffic reports for further study.
