Implementation & Usability Evaluation of Math Expression Reader for Domestic Reading Disables (국내 독서장애인을 위한 Math Expression Reader의 구현 및 사용성 평가)

  • E-books produced in the country provide limited audio service for reading disables. The reason is that those books cannot translate the mathematical expressions and symbols in the context. In this paper, the 'Math Expression Reader' was implemented that can translate the expressions and symbols in the document into Korean speech for those who have reading disabilities. The math to speech generated by this program has been tested to both the public and reading disables and the results of this test has been compared whether they can exactly understand the speech and evaluated the reading rules.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify ways in which to improve assistance of reading culture promotion for reading disables in Busan Metropolitan City. The research conducted a survey on reading culture promotion works which were conducted through related public institutions, private organizations and facilities for disadvantaged class, including public libraries. This study analyzed the situations in Busan. The Results indicated promotional strategies are needed in reading culture for the handicapped. This study suggest ways in which to improve assistance through analytical research which are models of mutual cooperation for reading culture promotion in Busan.

A Reading Technique of math expression in e-Book for Reading-disabled People (독서 장애인 용 전자책 내 수식 독음 기법)

  • Digital talking books have been developed to enhance reading experiences for reading-disabled people. In the existing digital talking books, however, it is difficult to read special contents such as math expressions, images, etc. In this paper, we define reading rules for Contents MathML. Based on this rules, we implemented a program for reading the mathematical contents of Contents MathML, using XSLT. We conducted a confirm test to prove the accuracy of the program, and an usability test to measure understanding of reading text of math expressions.

A Design of Mobile e-Book Viewer interface for the Reading Disabled People (독서장애인용 모바일 전자책뷰어 인터페이스 설계)

  • As the eBook market grows fast recently, various eBook viewer solutions such as hardware viewers and software readers came out to the market. We can, however, hardly find mobile eBook interfaces for the reading disabled people who have difficulties in reading for their visual impairment or learning disabilities, or dyslexia. An eBook viewer interfaces for the reading disabled people should be carefully and distinctively designed because the reading disabled people cannot use normal versions of eBook viewer. In this paper, we suggest a eBook viewer interface model to make the reading disabled people read eBooks easily. Depending on the type of the reading disabled people: the full blind, the almost blind, the just learning disabled, our model provides an adaptive interface to make them read eBooks effectively. In addition, unlike the existing simple audio books, we also support annotation systems to make the reading disabled people interact with eBook viewer. To show the effectiveness of our model, we implemented an eBook viewer prototype on an android-based mobile device. We are sure that our model and implementation can make the reading disabled people, who is 10% of all the domestic people, read eBooks effectively.
