  • Reactive mesogens were used to prepare photo-cured liquid crystal films in which orientations of liquid crystal molecules were preserved by crosslinked networks of cured reactive mesogens. The molecular orientations of liquid crystal mixtures of photo-reative mesogens and non-reactive nematic liquid crystals were studied and compared before and after curing reactions. The effects of temperature and the amount of the non-reactive nematic liquid crystal in the mixture on birefringence of the liquid crystal films were investigated. It was found that optical compensation films with different birefringence could be prepared by controlling the amount of the nematic liquid crystals in the reactive mesogen mixtures.

  • The dielectric properties and various pattern-forming states of dual-frequency material in a nematic phase, as well as its mixture containing low concentrations of reactive monomers, are reported. The dielectric relaxation behaviors of nematic MLC 2048 are presented and compared to its mixture containing both mesogenic and nonmesogenic reactive monomers. The sign-inversion frequency of the dielectric anisotropy was significantly shifted on the addition of small amounts of the reactive monomers. However, all three mixtures used in this study essentially exhibited the same field-induced instabilities at different frequencies and voltage domains of the applied electric field. A broad band of modulated states were found to exist above a critical voltage and within a voltage dependent frequency band in the vicinity of the sign-inversion frequency, $f_I$, of the dielectric anisotropy. As the $f_I$ of the mixtures shifted, so did the bands of the modulated state of the different mixtures and the temperatures, which were well matched with the measured $f_I$ value.

  • Since a transition from liquid crystal to crystal state is slow for the large photo-reactive liquid crystal molecules, it needs a long time for recrystallization of LC242 molecules when lowering the temperature of the liquid crystal. Although liquid crystals usually align along one direction, the directions of individual liquid crystal molecules are little different from one another with increasing temperature, resulting in changes of birefringence of the liquid crystal films. When the photo-reactive liquid crystals are photo-cured, faster curing kinetics and much larger curing degrees are observed for the films cured at the liquid crystal phase.

  • We proposed a novel single gap transflective liquid crystal display (LCD) using liquid crystal with negative dielectric anisotropy. We designed cell structure driven by fringe electric field in the transmissive (T) part and vertical electric field in the reflective (R) part. In the device, high surface pretilt angle of the LC in the R-part is achieved through polymerization of an UV curable reactive mesogen (RM) monomer at surfaces. By optimizing the parameters, a newly developed transflective display has characteristics such as single gap and single gamma curve.

  • New liquid crystal (LC) host mixtures and reactive mesogens (RMs) designed for the Polymer Sustainable Vertically Aligned (PS-VA) mode have been developed. The novel combination of LC host mixture with RMs enables to show superior LC display performance with high reliability and to contribute for the robust LC panel production process.

  • We demonstrate a pixel-isolated bistable twist-splay namatic (PI-BTSN) liquid crystal (LC) cell which has two stable states of splay and ${\pi}$-twist. Each state is stabilized by a multi-dimensional anchoring effect of pixel-isolating polymer walls without any chiral additives. Polymer walls are formed around the pixel region by anisotropic phase separation between LCs and reactive mesogens. Switching between the two states is archived by using vertical and horizontal electric fields. The memory mode of the fabricated LC cell has shown infinity memory time.

  • We propose a method to control the pretilt angle of liquid crystal (LC) by doping a proper amount of UV curable reactive mesogen (RM) monomers in hometropic polyimide (PI). The intermediate pretilt angles are produced by anchoring competition between homeotropic PI and the polymerized RM which direction is along the LC molecules under electric field.

  • We present a polarization-dependent prism array film for controlling the viewing angle distribution of liquid crystal (LC) display panels without loss of light efficiency. On a directional backlight unit, our polarization-dependent prism array film, made into a stacked bilayer with a well-aligned liquid crystalline reactive mesogen (RM) layer on the UV-imprinted prism structure, can continuously control the light refraction function of the prism array by electrically switching incident polarization states of a polarization-controlling layer prepared by a twisted nematic LC mode. The viewing angle control properties of the polarization-dependent prism array film are analyzed under different prism angle and refractive index conditions of the RM layer. A simple analytic model is also presented to describe the intermediate viewing angle distributions with continuously varying applied voltages and incident polarization states.

  • The Conventional patterned vertical alignment (PVA) device shows a very high contrast ratio at normal direction and does not require rubbing process. However it has a disclination area in which the liquid crystal can be collision in the boundary domain region. In this paper, we studied PVA(Z-shape) device in which the liquid crystal can be tilted down in multiple directions stably because the surface pretilt angle is controlled by photopolymerization of the UV - curable reactive mesogen (RM) under a proper condition. Consequently, the device shows improved electro optical properties as compared to conventional PVA mode.

  • Polyimides are blended with photoreactive polymers in order to improve the thermal stability of molecular orientation of photoreactive groups induced by polarized UV irradiation. The polyimide/photopolymer blends can be applied for the photo-induced liquid crystal alignment layers. However, the polyimides are also decomposed by UV irradiation and this may have the negative effect on the orientation of liquid crystals. In order to elucidate the influence of polyimide on the molecular orientation of liquid crystal, non-photoreactive naphthalenic polyimide (1,4,5,8-naphthalene tetracarboxylic dianhydride} was selected for the blend alignment layers. We prepared the blends of photo-reactive coumarin polymers and naphthalenic polyimide, and investigated the orientation of liquid crystals. Thermal stability of the orientation of liquid crystals was enhanced due to the thermally stable polyimide. However, there was no other side-effect of polyimide on the orientation of liquid crystals and this might be attributed to the non-photo-reactivity of naphtahlenic polyimide.
