The Utopian Enclave: Little Pyongyang in London as Temporary Utopias

  • This paper introduces the concept of temporary utopia, which is private rather than communal and individual rather than collective, to investigate a paradoxical relationship between longing and loss in the individuals' utopian process. The main argument is grounded in Ernst Bloch's critical theory of utopia, which gives more weight to its function and process rather than its form and destination, which is the opposite of the traditional utopian imagination. The notion of temporality as utopic-spatial consequences is illustrated with a case study of New Malden's North Korean community in London, United Kingdom. Through the examination of North Koreans' utopianism, it amplifies how the individual memories, emotions, and longings are re-created, re-built and re-imagined in the form of temporary utopias to incorporate the endless ideals and changing conditions of the individuals. This investigation sheds new light on urban ethnic enclaves as utopia in the realm of architecture and urbanism.

Swyer-James (Macleod) 증후군수술치험 1례 (Swyer-James (Macleods) Syndrome - One case report -)

  • The Swyer-James syndrome is rare abnormality that may be encountered on routine chest X * ray examination and frequently presents a diagnostic problem. Recently, we experienced a case of Swyer-James syndrome which was accompanied with ipsilateral uncontrolled pneumothorax. We performed exploratory thoracotomy because of failure of re-expansion of the lung. Right pneumonectomy was performed and postoperative course was uneventful.

왕우렁이 추출물의 역류성 식도염 억제 효과 (The Anti-inflammatory Effects of Golden Apple Snail (Pomacea canaliculata) in Reflux Esophagitis Model)

  • 본 결과를 통해, 왕우렁이 추출물의 역류성 식도염 모델에서 위 내용물의 역류로 인한 조직손상에 대한 보호효과를 확인하였다. 식도 점막의 육안 소견과 조직병리학적 분석 결과 점막의 괴사, 염증세포의 침윤 등의 증상이 완화됨을 확인하였으며, 상피조직의 tight junction을 보호하여 위산과 펩신으로부터 점막을 보호하는 것을 확인하였다. 이러한 왕우렁이 추출물의 식도 보호효과는 NF-κB 기전의 조절을 통해 점막의 염증반응을 억제하여 나타나는 것으로 생각된다. 이상의 결과를 종합하였을 때, 왕우렁이 추출물이 역류성 식도염 완화를 위한 기능성 소재로서의 가능성을 가지는 것으로 사료된다.

Measurement Error Variance Estimation Based on Complex Survey Data with Subsample Re-Measurements

  • In many cases, the measurement error variances may be functions of the unknown true values or related covariates. This paper considers design-based estimators of the parameters of these variance functions based on the within-unit sample variances. This paper devotes to: (1) define an error scale factor $\delta$; (2) develop estimators of the parameters of the linear measurement error variance function of the true values under large-sample and small-error conditions; (3) use propensity methods to adjust survey weights to account for possible selection effects at the replicate level. The proposed methods are applied to medical examination data from the U.S. Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III).

Current Situation of the International Recognition of Toxicologists -Update of the Japanese Society of Toxicology-

  • Issuance of certification and licensing for toxicologists authorized by the Japanese Society of Thxicology (JST) became effective on July 24, 1997. The certification system consists of examination, eligibility requirements for the applicants, authorization/license by the board of trustees of JST, and the re-certification of previously authorized qualification. In the last 2-3 years, about 30-40% of candidates for the examination have succeeded. The Committee has estimated that the level of the examination would be sufficient to determine qualified toxicologists. This updated status and a detailed explanation are to be presented at the workshop. In global terms, the JST special committee agrees that "harmonization of certification/registration procedure for qualified toxicologists means to ensure/set the minimum requirement for the global authorization of qualified toxicologists". The following items in global authorization are ad-dressed for further discussion: (1) What's the benefit\ulcorner (2) Toxicological safety assessment standards, and (3) the JST position for authorization.orization.

회전근 개 파열의 크기 및 봉합 방법에 따른 초음파를 이용한 추적검사의 유용성 (Ultrasonographic Assessment for Rotator Cuff Repair According to the Tear Sizes and the Repair Method)

  • 목적: 관절경적 회전근 개 봉합술 후 주기적 초음파 추적검사의 임상적 유용성과 회전근 개 파열크기 및 봉합방법에 따른 재파열의 빈도 및 시기를 밝히고자 한다. 대상 및 방법: 2008년 1월부터 6월까지 본원 정형외과에 내원하여 회전근 개 파열로 관절경적 치료를 시행한 환자 52명 중 6개월 이상 추시 관찰한 29명을 대상으로 초음파 검사를 시행한 후 관절경적 시술을 이용하여 비교하였으며, 수술 후 2주, 6주, 3개월 및 6개월에 회전근 개의 건재 상태를 초음파를 이용하여 관찰하였다. 결과: 전층 회전근 개 파열 중 소 및 중 파열은 10예로, 이중 활차 교량 봉합술(double pully suture bridge technique, DPSB)을 시행하였으며 2예(20%)에서 재파열(retear) 소견을 확인할 수 있었으며, 대 및 광범위 파열은 19예로, 건-건 봉합술을 시행한 6예 모두(100%)에서, 건-건 봉합술 및 골-건 봉합술을 시행한 2예 중 1예(50%)에서, 이중 활차교량 봉합술을 시행한 11예 중 6예(55%)에서 재파열 소견을 확인할 수 있었다. 추시 관찰의 시기에 따른 재파열은 수술 후 2주에서 6주 사이에 1예(7%), 6주에서 3개월 사이에 10예(66%), 3개월에서 6개월 사이에 4예(27%)가 관찰되었다. 결론: 관절경적 회전근 개 봉합술 후 주기적 초음파 추적검사는 재파열 유무 및 재파열의 시기를 확인하는데 유용하며, 술 후 재활치료의 지침을 설정하는데 도움을 줄 수 있을 것으로 생각한다.

경상북도 안강 행주 기씨 묘 출토 직금단 치마와 저고리 보존처리 - 직금단 편금사의 금박 재접착을 중심으로 - (Conservation of Golden Decorative(Jikgeumdan) Jeogori and Chima of Costumes Excavated from Hangju Gi' Tomb of Angang, Kyungsangbukdo Province - Re-adhesion of Gold Leaves in Gilt Paper Strips -)

  • The purpose of this research is to conserve of golden decoration(Jikgeumdan) of Chima(skirt) and Jeogori(Korean jacket) of the costumes excavated from Hangju Gi' tomb(17th Century) of Joseon dynasty$(1392{\sim}1910)$ and to focus on the development of conservation skill to prevent flakings of gold leaves in gilt paper strips. Up to the present, in case of golden decorations of costumes excavated from tombs of Joseon dynasty, some of gold leaves in gilt paper strips of costumes were flaked away by deterioration of adhesives in tombs. However, most of gold leaves were flaked away and totally lost by wet cleaning for eliminating contaminants after excavation. In order to prevent flaking, preliminary experiments for re-adhesion of gold leaves have been carried out. Firstly, simulation was performed using gold leaf which was available in the market. Adhesives used in this research were water-soluble adhesives(hide glue(cow, rabbit), glue made from air bladders of sciaenoid fish and Primal AC-3444 of acrylic emulsion) and solvent-soluble adhesives(acrylic adhesive Paraloid B-67 and B-72). Because of difficulty in wetting and spreading of adhesive solutions into the interface between gold leaf and Korean paper, water-soluble adhesives were not proper for adhesion of gold leaf and Korean paper. Solvent-soluble adhesives were easily infiltrated into interface between gold leaf and Korean paper and the adhesive force was also satisfied. From this result, the researchers chose more flexible Paraloid B-72$(Tg\;40^{\circ}C)$ 1% solution than Paraloid B-67$(Tg\;50^{\circ}C)$ for adhesion of gold leaf and Korean paper. Secondly, using Paraloid B-72 1% solution, the estimations of re-adhesions of gold leaves in gilt paper strips of Jeogori were carried out. When Paraloid B-72 1% solution was injected three times into the interface between gold leaf and Korean paper, the re-adhesion was most effective. On the basis of the results in these preliminary experiments, re-adhesions of gold leaves in gilt paper strips of Chima and Jeogori were carried out on condition of three times injections of Paraloid B-72 1% solution before wet cleaning. After wet cleaning, the most of the gold leaves were survived, which was confirmed by both the examination with the naked eye and the microscopic examination.
