Vortex-induced vibration of three circular cylinders (each of diameter D) in an equilateral triangular arrangement is investigated using the immersed boundary method. The cylinders, with one placed upstream and the other two side-by-side downstream, are free to vibrate in the cross-flow direction. The cylinder center-to-center spacing L is adopted as L/D = 2.0. Other parameters include the Reynolds number Re = 100, mass ratio $m^*=2.0$, reduced velocity $U_r=2{\sim}15$ and damping ratio ${\zeta}=0$. Cylinder vibration responses are dependent on $U_r$ and classified into five regimes, i.e. Regime I ($U_r{\leq}3.2$), Regime II ($3.2<U_r{\leq}5.0$), Regime III ($5.0<U_r{\leq}6.4$), Regime IV ($6.4<U_r{\leq}9.2$) and Regime V ($U_r>9.2$). Different facets of vibration amplitude, hydrodynamic forces, wake patterns and displacement spectra are extracted and presented in detail for each regime.
Numerical studies on the hydrodynamics of a freely falling rigid sphere in bounded and unbounded water domains are presented having investigation on the drag coefficient, normalized velocity, surface pressure and skin friction coefficient as a function of time. Two different conditions of the bounded and unbounded domains have been simulated by setting the blockage ratio. Four cases of bounded domains (B.R. = 1%, 25%, 45%, 55%, 65% and 75%) have been taken, whereas the unbounded domain has been considered with 0.01%. In the case of the bounded domain (higher values of B.R.), a substantial reduction in normalized velocity and increase in the drag coefficient have been found in presence of the bounded domain. Moreover, bounded domains also yield a significant increase in the pressure coefficient when the sphere is partially submerged, but the insignificant effect is found on the skin friction coefficient. In the case of the unbounded domain, a significant reduction in normalized velocity occurs with a decrease in Reynolds number (Re) and also increase in the drag coefficient.

This work is to observe the wake flow generated behind a ramp. We have conducted a large eddy simulation with two ramp models having different heights with two different inflow conditions. Reynolds number based on the height of the large ramp (LR) and small ramp (SR) are Reh = 2.8×104 and 1.4×104 respectively. The wake flow visualization shows the formation of streamwise counter-rotating vortices pairs at the downstream of the obstacle. These primary vortices are stretched and lifted up when moving downstream. In order to observe the effect of the inflow condition on the wake transition, two different inlet flow conditions are given on the inlet section as an inlet boundary condition. Induced counter-rotating vortices pairs due to sharp-edged triangular ramp obstacles are developed and propagated downstream. In the result, the large ramp shows a more complicated wake structure of the boundary layer than the small ramp.

Turbulent flow over a fully-developed wavy channel is investigated by the nonlinear $k-\varepsilon-f_\mu$ model of Park et al.(1) The Reynolds number is fixed at $Re_{b}$ = 6760 through all wave amplitudes and the wave configuration is varied in the range of $0\leq\alpha/\lambda\leq0.15$ and $0.25\leq{\lambda}/H\leq4.0$. The predicted results for wavy channel are validated by comparing with the DNS data of Maa$\beta$ and Schumann(2) The model performance Is shown to be generally satisfactory. As the wave amplitude increases, it is found that the form drag grows linearly and the friction drag is overwhelmed by the form drag. In order to verify these characteristics, a large eddy simulation is performed for four cases. The dynamic model of Germane et al.(3) is adopted. Finally, the effects of wavy amplitude on separated shear layer are scrutinized.

The local Nusselt numbers have been measured for a round turbulent jet impinging on the concave surface with and without rib. Liquid crystal/transient method was used to determine the Nusselt number distributions along the surface. The temperature on the surface was measured using liquid crystal and a digital color image processing system. The experiments were made for the jet Reynolds number (Re) 23,000, the dimensionless nozzle-to-surface distance (L/d) from 4 to 10, the dimensionless surface curvature (d/D) 0.056, and the rib type (height ($d_1$) 0.2 cm, pitch (p) from 1.2 to 3.2 cm). It was founded that only when $L/d{\geq}6$, the average Nusselt numbers on the concave surface with rib are higher than those without rib, mainly due to an increase in the turbulent intensity caused by the effect of rib attached to the wall surface. It was realized that the rib attached to the concave surface may no longer enhance the heat transfer rate or even lowers it depending on the rib type and flow conditions. In addition, the results by the steady-state method using the gold-film Intrex were in good agreement with those by the transient shroud method.
The Paper studies the flow and heat transfer characteristics to a jet impinging at different oblique angles, to a plane surface by numerical methods. The flowfield and heat transfer rate associated with the oblique Impingement of an axisymmetric jet are of interest as a result of its presence in numerous technological Problems. For the computation of heat transfer rate, the standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ and ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}-\bar {{\upsilon}'^ 2}$ turbulent model were adapted. The accuracy of the numerical calculations was compared with various experimental data reported in the literature. ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}-\bar {{\upsilon}'^ 2}$ model showed better agreement with experimental data than standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model in prediction of the turbulent intensity and the heat transfer rate. In the case of computation of flowfield, the study carries on the ${\alpha}=45$ deg, h/D=4.95. The jet Reynolds number based on the nozzle diameter(D), was 48,000. For the computation of heat transfer rate, the Re=20,000, the jet orifice-to-plate spacings(L/D) are 4, 6 and 10, and the angle between the axis of the jet orifice and the plate surface is set at 30, 45, 60, or 90 deg. For the smaller spacings, the near-peak Nusselt numbers are not significantly effected by the initial decreases in the Jet angle. The overall shape of the local Nusselt number x-axis profile is influenced by both the jet orifice-to-plate spacing and the jet angle.

To investigate the moderator coolability for CANDU-6 reactors, a test facility (HU-KINS) has been manufactured as a 1/8 scaled-down of a calandria tank. In the design of the test facility, a scaling law was developed in such a way to consider the thermal-hydraulic characteristics of a CANDU-6 moderator. The proposed scaling law takes into consideration of the energy conservation, the dynamic similitude such as dimensionless numbers, Archimedes number (Ar) and Reynolds number (Re), and thermal-hydraulic properties similitude. Using this proposed scaling law, the thermal-hydraulic scaling analyses of similar test facilities such as the SPEL (1/10 scale) and the STERN (1/4 scale), have been identified. As a result, in the case of the SPEL, while the energy conservation is well defined, the similarities of Ar and the heat density are not well considered. As for the similarity of the STERN, while both the energy conservation and the characteristics of Ar are well defined, the heat density is not. In the meanwhile, the HU-KINS test facility with 1/8 length scaled-down is well similitude in compliance with all similarities of the energy conservation, the fluid dynamics and thermal-hydraulic properties. To verify the adequacy of the similarities in terms of thermal-hydraulics, a computational fluid dynamic (CFD) analysis has been conducted using the CFX-5 code. As the results of the CFD analyses, the predicted flow patterns and variation of axial properties inside the calandria tank are well consistant with those of previous studies performed with FLUENT and this implies that the present scaling method is acceptable.

In this study, we investigate the characteristics of the drag reduction of a circular cylinder having a detached splitter plate at the wake side. We measure the fluid force on a circular cylinder and visualize the field using particle image velocimetry (PIV) with a high Reynolds number, Re = 10,000. The experimental paraeters used were the width ratios (H/B = 0.5~1.5) of splitters to the prism width and the gap ratios (G/B = 0~2) between the prism and the splitter plate. The drag-reduction rate of the circular cylinder increased with H/B in the case of the same G/B, and it increased and then decreased with G/B in the case of the same H/B. The vortices of the opposite direction on the upper and lower sides of the detached splitter plate were generated by installing the plate. Reverse flow was caused by the vortices at the wake region of the circular cylinder, and the drag of the circular cylinder was decreased by the reverse flow.

The friction factors according to the flow regimes in helical coil tubes depend on the coil diameter, the tube diameter, and the coil pitch. In previous studies, correlations for the laminar flow regime in helical coil tubes have been proposed. However, studies on the transition flow regime and the turbulent flow regime are insufficient and further researches are necessary. In this study, characteristics of the friction factors for the laminar, transition and turbulent flow regimes in helical coil tubes were experimentally investigated. The helical coil tubes used in the experiments were made of copper. The curvature ratios of the helical coil tubes, which means the ratio of helical coil diameter to inner diameter of the helical coil tube are 24.5 and 90.9. Experiments were carried out in the range of $529{\leq}Re{\leq}39,406$ to observe the flows from the laminar to the turbulent regime. The friction factors were obtained by measuring the differential pressures according to the flow rates in the helical coil tubes while varying the curvature ratios of the helical coil tubes. Experimental data show that the friction factors for the helical coil tube with 24.5 in the curvature ratio of the helical coil tube were larger than those in the straight tube in all flow regimes. As the curvature ratio of the helical coil tube increases, the friction factor in turbulent flow regime tends to be equal to that of the straight tube. In addition, it was confirmed that the transition flow regimes in the helical coil tubes were much wider than those in the straight tube, also the critical Reynolds numbers were larger than those in the straight tube. The results obtained in this experimental study can be used as basic data for studies on the water hammer phenomenon in helical coil tubes.

The high-Reynolds number flow around a rectangular cylinder, having streamwise to crossflow length ratio equal to 5 is analyzed in the present paper. The flow is characterized by shear-layer separation from the upstream edges. Vortical structures of different size form from the roll-up of these shear layers, move downstream and interact with the classical vortex shedding further downstream in the wake. The corresponding mean flow is characterized by a recirculation region along the lateral surface of the cylinder, ending by mean flow reattachment close to the trailing edge. The mean flow features on the cylinder side have been shown to be highly sensitive to set-up parameters both in numerical simulations and in experiments. The results of 21 Large Eddy Simulations (LES) are analyzed herein to highlight the impact of the lateral mean recirculation characteristics on the near-wake flow features and on some bulk quantities. The considered simulations have been carried out at Reynolds number Re=DU_∞/ν=40 000, being D the crossflow dimension, U_∞ the freestream velocity and ν the kinematic viscosity of air; the flow is set to have zero angle of attack. Some simulations are carried out with sharp edges (Mariotti et al. 2017), others with different values of the rounding of the upstream edges (Rocchio et al. 2020) and an additional LES is carried out to match the value of the roundness of the upstream edges in the experiments in Pasqualetto et al. (2022). The dimensions of the mean recirculation zone vary considerably in these simulations, allowing us to single out meaningful trends. The streamwise length of the lateral mean recirculation and the streamwise distance from the upstream edge of its center are the parameters controlling the considered quantities. The wake width increases linearly with these parameters, while the vortex-shedding non-dimensional frequency shows a linear decrease. The drag coefficient also linearly decreases with increasing the recirculation length and this is due to a reduction of the suctions on the base. However, the overall variation of C_D is small. Finally, a significant, and once again linear, increase of the fluctuations of the lift coefficient is found for increasing the mean recirculation streamwise length.
