  • In this paper, 200 W power supply for LED driver has been designed, analyzed, simulated and tested. Input AC voltage of 100VAC-240VAC was converted to DC voltage by high power factor converter. Output voltage was controlled, and output current was controlled by constant current when output current was reached to LED maximum rated current. By simulation and experimental test, voltage and current control and high power factor characteristics are verified.

  • This paper presents the general recommendations for the overload criterions of mineral-oil-immersed distribution transformers rated 100kVA and less. For this purpose, we analyze the characteristics of top-oil temperature rising for mineral-oil-immersed power distribution transformer rated 100kVA and less, manufactured in Korea, In order to analyze the characteristics of top-oil temperature rising due to the distribution transformer loading, we performed experiments at KERI (Korea Electrical Research Institute) from December 2000 to May 2001. The restraint of ambient temperatures for the experiment results is solved using the results of foreign standards. Finally, we present the overload criterions of distribution transformer for summer and winter season, respectively.

  • In this paper, we present a hydrostatic bearing design and rotordynamic analysis of a pump-and-drive turbine module for a 250-kW supercritical CO2 cycle application. The pump-and-drive turbine module consists of the pump and turbine wheel, assembled to a shaft supported by two hydrostatic radial and thrust bearings. The rated speed is 21,000 rpm and the rated power is 143 kW. For the bearing operation, we use high-pressure CO2 as the lubricant, which is supplied to the bearing through the orifice restrictor. We calculate the bearing stiffness and flow rate for various orifice diameters, and then select the diameter that provides the maximum bearing stiffness. We also conduct a rotordynamic analysis based on the design parameters of the pump-and-drive turbine module. The predicted Campbell diagram shows that there is no critical speed below the rated speed, owing to the high stiffness of the bearings. Furthermore, the predicted damping ratio indicates that there is no unstable mode. We conduct the operating tests for the pump and drive turbine modules within the supercritical CO2 cycle test loop. The pressurized CO2, at a temperature of 136℃, is supplied to the turbine and we monitor the shaft vibration during the test. The test results show that there is no critical speed below the rated speed, and the shaft vibration is controlled to below 3 ㎛.

  • As engine is produced with foreign technology, basic data for cooling fan are very few in korea. Therefore, an experiment was performed to obtain data on cooling fans for the cooling system. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. Efficiency of cooling fan was 49.9% while the engine eras running at the rated power. 2. Shaft power of the fan was 0.5 kW maximum at the rated power. 3. Air flow rate of the fan was $12.9m^3/min$. at the rated power. 4. Static pressure of the fan was 29.8 mmHg at the rated power.

  • This paper presents a hydrostatic bearing design and rotordynamic analysis of a turbo expander for a hydrogen liquefaction plant. Th~e turbo expander includes the turbine and compressor wheel assembled to a shaft supported by two hydrostatic radial and thrust bearings. The rated speed is 75,000 rpm and the rated power is 6 kW. For the bearing operation, we use pressurized air at 8.5 bar as the lubricant that is supplied to the bearing through the orifice restrictor. We calculate the bearing stiffness and flow rate for various gauge pressure ratios and select the orifice diameter providing the maximum bearing stiffness. Additionally, we conduct a rotordynamic analysis based on the calculated bearing stiffness and damping considering design parameters of the turbo expander. The predicted Cambell diagram indicates that there are two critical speeds under the rated speed and there exists a sufficient separation margin for the rated speed. In addition, the predicted rotor vibration is under 1 ㎛ at the rated speed. We conduct the operating test of the turbo expander in the test rig. For the operation, we supply pressurized air to the turbine and monitor the shaft vibration during the test. The test results show that there are two critical speeds under the rated speed, and the shaft vibration is controlled under 2.5 ㎛.

  • According to the advance that solar power plants go into the desert, power plants are getting greater capacity. The desert is unspoiled resources and it is well suited to build a solar power plant, because of abundant solar radiation and long sunshine duration. but existing PV modules have several weaknesses and don't generate lower the rated power, because it wasn't designed to produce in extreme environments like a desert climate. The one of the weaknesses of PV modules is that the characteristics of the temperature of the Encapsulants(EVA sheet) are not good in a desert climate, because the EVA sheet is melt at high temperature. In this study, a decrease phenomenon of the transmittance depending on the melting point of the Encapsulant(PV module using EVA sheet : $75^{\circ}C$ PV module using PVB film : $110^{\circ}C$) is suggested, it would be the one of the important factors to achieve rated output of the PV modules in high temperature climate regions.

  • Nowadays, it is a global trend to build refinery or chemical plants with an isolated system in a place distant from the center of a city. In the refinery or chemical plants equipped with an isolated system, induced motors mostly take the load, and the scale of high-voltage electric motors reaches from several kW up to several MW. Therefore, it is needed to examine the effects of electric motors on the power system closely in the stages of planning and designing a plant to build a stable power system. This study is aimed to investigate how to decide rated voltage in consideration of stability which has not been considered in the stages of planning and designing so far in order to secure stability for the power system.

  • This paper presents a single phase high power factor PWM boost rectifier featuring soft commutat -ion of the active switches at zero current. It incorporates the most desirable properties of conventional PWM and soft switching resonant techniques. The input current shaping is achieved with average current mode control and continuous inductor current mode. This new PWM converter provides zero current turn on and turn off of the active switches, and it is suitable for high power applications employing IGBT's. The principle of operation, the theoretical analysis, a design example, and experi -mental results from a laboratory prototype rated at 1.6[kW] with 400[Vdc] output voltage are presented. The measured efficiency and the power factor were 96.2[%] and 0.99[%], respectively, with an input current THD equal to 3.94[%], for an input voltage with THD equal to 3.8[%], at rated load.

  • Climatic characteristics were described using the LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) and the met-mast on Dongbok·Bukchon region. The influences of meteorological conditions on the power performance of wind turbines were presented using the data of Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) and met-mast of the Dongbok·Bukchon Wind Farm (DBWF) located in Jeju Island. The stability was categorized into three parameters (Richardson number, Turbulence intensity, and Wind shear exponent). DBWF was dominant in unstable atmospheric conditions. At wind speeds of 14 m/s or more, the proportion of slightly unstable conditions accounted for more than 50%. A clear difference in the power output of the wind turbine was exhibited in the category of atmospheric stability and turbulence intensity (TI). Particularly, a more sensitive difference in power performance was showed in the rated wind speeds of the wind turbine and wind regime with high TI. When the flow had a high turbulence at low wind speeds and a low turbulence at rated wind speeds, a higher wind energy potential was produced than that in other conditions. Finally, the high-efficiency of the wind farm was confirmed in the slightly unstable atmospheric stability. However, when the unstable state become stronger, the wind farm efficiency was lower than that in the stable state.
