In this study, we put our object to carry out adaptive modeling of cutting process in turning system, and to find out the optimal cutting conditions to maximize material removal rate under some constraints. We used a back-propagation neural network to model the cutting process adaptively and a genetic algorithm to find out optimal cutting conditions. The experimental results show that a back-propagation neural network could model the cutting process effciently, and optimized cutting conditions for maximizing the material removal rate were obtained through the adaptive process model and genetic algorithms. Therefore, the proposed approach can be applied to the real machining system.
This paper presents an adaptive satellite communication systems to adapt channel environment. High performance coding and modulation techniques are applied to poor channel condition, otherwise, bandwidth efficient coding and modulation techniques are applied to good channel condition to obtain high transmission rate.
Several video coding standards, such as MPEG-4 and H.263, have been investigated to reduce the resulting number of bits while pursuing the maximum video quality. The recent video coding standard, H.264, provides higher coding efficiency than previous coding standards by using the mode decision scheme. For mode decision, H.264 chooses the best macroblock mode among the several candidates using Lagrangian cost function which reflects both the rate and the distortion. H.264 employs only one rate-distortion optimization (RDO) model for all macroblocks. Since the characteristics of each macroblock is different, each macroblock should have its own RDO model. In this paper, we propose an adaptive rate-distortion optimization algorithm for H.264. We regulate the Lagrangian multiplier considering the picture type and characteristics of each macroblock.

This paper presents an adaptive rate control scheme for streaming-based content sharing service. This scheme delivers multimedia contents from a user device to another device or seamlessly redirects streaming service across heterogeneous user devices. In the proposed scheme, a streaming server adjusts video quality level according to the network and client status. Our scheme is different from other rate control schemes, because the video quality at the server is decided not only based on the available bandwidth, but also based on the device characteristics and bandwidth requirement at the access network. We also propose a bandwidth estimation method to achieve more equitable bandwidth allocations among streaming flows competing for the same narrow link with different Round Trip Times (RTTs). Through the simulation, we prove that our scheme improves the network stability and the quality of streaming service by appropriately adjusting the quality of the video stream. The simulation results also demonstrate the ability of the proposed scheme in ensuring RTT-fairness while remaining throughput efficient.
This paper examines an adaptive coding scheme for flat fading channels to maximize the average code rate of a coded system. The proposed adaptation technique is employed by using the required free distance of a rate compatible code depending on the channel realization. First, the system will calculate the required free distance based on the instantaneous channel gain. Based on this channel gain we will select a set of convolution code to optimize the code rate with a certain performance requirement. Simulation results show that our proposal can achieve a higher code rate.
In this paper, forward error control coding in multicarrier direct sequence code division multiple access (DS/CDMA) systems is considered. In order to accommodate a number of coding rates easily and make the encoder and do-coder structure simple, we use the rate compatible punctured convolutional (RCPC) code. We obtain data throughputs at several coding rates and choose the coding rate which has the highest data throughput in the SINR sense. To achieve maximum data throughput, a rate adaptive system using channel state information (the SINR estimate) is proposed. The SINR estimate is obtain by the soft decision Viterbi decoding metric. We show that the proposed rate adaptive convolutionally coded multicarrier DS/CDMA system can enhance spectral efficiency and provide frequency diversity.
This paper presents an adaptive H.263+ rate control algorithm for streaming video applications under the networks supporting bandwidth renegotiation, which can communicate with end-users to accommodate their time-varying bandwidth requests during the data transmission. That is, the requests of end-users can be supported adaptively according to the availability of the network resources, and thus the overall network utilization can be improved simultaneously. They are especially suitable for the transmission of non-stationary video traffics. The proposed rate control algorithm communicates with the network to renegotiate the required bandwidth fort the underlying video which are measured based on the motion change information, and choose their control strategies according to the renegotiation results. Unlike most conventional algorithms that control only the spatial quality by adjusting quantization parameters, the proposed algorithm treats both the spatial and temporal qualities at the same time to enhance human visual perceptual quality. Experimental results are provided to demonstrate that the proposed rate control algorithm can achieve superior performance to the conventional ones with low computational complexity under the networks supporting bandwidth renegotiation.
In this paper, we study a single-machine scheduling problem with deteriorating processing time of jobs and multiple rate-modifying activities which reset deteriorated processing time to the original processing time. In this situation, the objective function is to minimize total completion time. First, we formulate an integer programming model. Since the model is difficult to solve as the size of real problem being very large, we design an improved genetic algorithm called adaptive genetic algorithm (AGA) with spontaneously adjusting crossover and mutation rate depending upon the status of current population. Finally, we conduct some computational experiments to evaluate the performance of AGA with the conventional GAs with various combinations of crossover and mutation rates.

Adaptive code rate change schemes in DS-SSMA systems are proposed. In the proposed schemes, the error correcting code rate is changed according to the channel states. Two channel states having significant effects on the bit error probability are considered: one is the effective number of users, and the other is the fading environment. These channel states are estimated based on retransmission requests. The criterion for the change of the code rate is to maximize the throughput under given error bound.
