  • Fusarium graminearum causes the devastating plant disease Fusarium head blight and produces mycotoxins on small cultivated grains. To investigate the timeframe of F. graminearum infection during rice cultivation, a spore suspension of F. graminearum was applied to the rice cultivars Dongjin 1 and Nampyeongbyeo before and after the heading stage. The disease incidence rate was the highest (50%) directly after heading, when the greatest number of flowers were present, while only 10% of the rice infected 30 days after heading showed symptoms. To understand the mechanism of infection, an F. graminearum strain expressing green fluorescent protein (GFP) was inoculated, and the resulting infections were visually examined. Spores were found in all areas between the glume and inner seed, with the largest amount of GFP detected in the aleurone layer. When the inner part of the rice seed was infected, the pathogen was mainly observed in the embryo. These results suggest that F. graminearum migrates from the anthers to the ovaries and into the seeds during the flowering stage of rice. This study will contribute to uncovering the infection process of this pathogen in rice.

  • This study was conducted to determine the efficacy of using uniconazole,[(E)-1-(4-chlorophenyl)-4,4-dimethyl-2-(1,2,4-triazole-1-yl)-1-penten-3-ol)] as a phytoprotectant against $SO_2$ injury in snap been (Phaseolus vulgaris L. 'Strike'). Thirteen days prior to $SO_2$ fumigation, plants were given a 100 ml soil drench of uniconazole solution at concentrations of 0.02, 0.10, 0.25 and 0.50 mg/pot. All four uniconazole concentrations were significantly effective in providing protection against $SO_2$ exposure(3 h at 1.5 ppm), but uniconazole treatment above 0.02 mg/pot severely reduced stem elongation, leaf enlargement, flowering date and pod number and weight. Uniconazole treatment had little or no effect on stomatal conductance but reduced transpiration rate on a whole plant basis by nearly 40%. This may reflect an alteration in canopy structure by reducing stem elongation and leaf enlargement. Although uniconazole did not increase the activities of superoxide dismutase(SOD) and peroxidase(POD) in non-$SO_2$-fumigated plants, it significantly increased those enzyme activities in $SO_2$-fumigated plants. Chlorophyll concentration on the basis of unit area was increased 50-60% by uniconazole. However, the difference was not detected on the basis of dry weight. $SO_2$ increased variable chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv) 48% after 1.5 h of exposure in non-uniconazole treated plants but decreased Fv in the plants after 3 h of exposure. By appliing uniconazole, it was possible to maintain high Fv values in the latter group of plants. These results suggest that the phytoprotective effects of uniconazole are related to its growth-retarding properties as an anti-gibberellin as well as the increase of activites of free radical scavengers such as SOD and POD.

  • Agrovoltaic system is a concept that combines agriculture and photovoltaic (PV) system by applying a PV system to the upper part of farmland. In this study, we developed a folding drive system for an agrophotovoltaic (agroPV) module (150 Wp/4×9 cell) exclusively for pear farming with 10 kW capacity. The system was installed in 2018, and the growth characteristics and quantity of pears under the agroPV folding system have been investigated for 2 years. We found that thare is no differences of the characteristics of pears grown under the agroPV system compared to the pears grown without the system (control) except the percutaneous color L of pear. However, the weight and sugar content of the pear grown under the agroPV system were decreased by 4.5% and 1.3°Bx compared to that of the control, respectively. We assume that this is mainly due to the influenced of the delay in flowering as upper PV module block some of sunlight. However, interestingly, when we deleyed the pear harvesting by 2 weeks, the weight of pears increased by 8.5% and they became nearly the sample as the control pears harvested 2 week earlier. In addition, we also found that the agroPV modules decrease the fall rate of pear when the typoon struck, also it mitigates cold damage by 38% during April by protecting from frost. In conclusion, it can be said that the agroPV system help to protect target crops from the environmental conditions and the quality of the crops are similar to the that of control.

  • To investigate the effect of Mycorrhiza (Glomus intradics) and Rhizobium inoculation on the N, P utilization and the growth of Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), four treatments (non-inoculation, control ; Mycorrhiza inoculation, M ; Rhizobiurn inoculation, R and Mycorrhiza and Rhizobium inoculation, M+R) were applied. The associated analyses were carried out on the early vegetative growth stage (DAS 56, 56 days after seeding) and on the early flowering stage (DAS 126). The decreased rate of total N and P content in soil, with advancing plant growth, was relatively higher in the mycorrhiza andor rhizobium treatments than control. The content of available phosphorus in soil at DAS 126 increased by about 40 % in M and M+R treatment compared to control (141.0 mg PzOg'kg DM), while non-significant changes was observed in R treatment. Total N uptake and P uptake in the control at DAS 126 were 33.91 mglplant and 2.42 mdplant, respectively, about 21, 50 and 51 % of increases in total N uptake and 30, 11 and 47 % of increases in total P uptake were estimated in M, R and M+R treatment. Comparing to control, dry matter yield significantly increased by 8, 27 and 28 %, and crude protein yield also by 21, 42 and 39 %, respectively, in M, R and M+R treatment. The present data indicated that mycorrhiza orland rhizobium inoculation improved N, P utilization, and consequently increased the yield of alfalfa. • Background: Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) is a useful medicinal and oil crop in Korea. However, when safflower is cultivated, the flowering period overlaps with the rainy season, and seed maturation is poor. Therefore, this study aimed to use basic research data to develop superior varieties using agronomic characteristics and crossing method. Methods and Results: A total of 34 safflower germplasms were sown and their agronomic characteristics were investigated. Based on these investigations, the cultivar 'ui-san-hong-hwa' was selected as the mother plant, and 'Myanmar safflower' (Hsu Pan) was selected as the father plant. In addition, we developed a floret-protecting cap to cover florets after emasculation during the artificial crossing. When florets were protected by the cap, the seed setting rate increased in comparison to that in the non-covered florets. Conclusions: Agronomic characteristics can contribute to developing suitable varieties. The results suggest that the protection cap will be helpful in breeding without the floral organ drying. This study contributes an efficient breeding method to develop new safflower varieties.

  • Effects of DIF on stem elongation in plug seedlings of mini tomato ‘Mini Carol’ and on the growth and flowering after transplanting were investigated. Stem elongation of seedlings was mainly influenced by day temperature rather than night temperature. When the effect of +DIF was compared to that of -DIF under the same average daily temperature(ADT), day temperature had greater impact on internode elongation than night temperature. On the other hand, leaf unfolding rate increased and compactness decreased as ADT in creased. Differences in internode length affected by DIF during seedlings stage DIF progressively diminished during growth period after transplanting. Node position at which first flower was initiated was lowered as ADT decreased. It was concluded that DIF treatment was an applicable tool for control of stem elongation, particularly to reduce stem length without a noticeably adverse effect on the growth and development of plant after transplanting.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the population changes of Liriomyza trijolii (Burgess) on chrysanthemum and its relationship to plant growth and damages. In spring culture of chrysanthemum, L. trifolii adults begun to be attracted by the yellow sticky trap from early May and maintained high population until the middle of July. Larval density increased gradually from late May and reached peak in early July. In autumn culture, the population density of adult was lower than that of spring culture but the number of adult was great in late September and the middle of October. This trend was similar to that of larval stage. Damaged leaves by larva could be found from 4 weeks after transplanting and its rate was low until 5 weeks but increased abruptly after 6 weeks and maintained 70% level until flowering stage in spring culture. Damaged leaves increased with plant growth in some varieties tested in this experiment.
