In the present study, novel chitosan coated magnetic magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles were successfully biosynthesized from mushroom, Agaricus campestris, extract. The obtained bio-nanocomposite material was used to investigate ultra-fast and highly efficient for removal of Ni2+ ions in a fixed-bed column. Chitosan was treated as polyelectrolyte complex with Fe3O4 nanoparticles and a Fungal Bio-Nanocomposite Material (FBNM) was derived. The FBNM was characterized by using X-Ray Diffractometer (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), Fourier Transform Infrared spectra (FTIR) and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) techniques and under varied experimental conditions. The influence of some important operating conditions including pH, flow rate and initial Ni2+ concentration on the uptake of Ni2+ solution was also optimized using a synthetic water sample. A Central Composite Design (CCD) combined with Response Surface Modeling (RSM) was carried out to maximize Ni2+ removal using FBNM for adsorption process. A regression model was derived using CCD to predict the responses and analysis of variance (ANOVA) and lack of fit test was used to check model adequacy. It was observed that the quadratic model, which was controlled and proposed, was originated from experimental design data. The FBNM maximum adsorption capacity was determined as 59.8 mg g-1. Finally, developed method was applied to soft drinks to determine Ni2+ levels. Reusability of FBNM was tested, and the adsorption and desorption capacities were not affected after eight cycles. The paper suggests that the FBNM is a promising recyclable nanoadsorbent for the removal of Ni2+ from various soft drinks.

Enrichment possibilities for recovering rare earth elements contained in coal bottom ash generated from domestic circulating fluidized bed combustion (CFBC) were identified. The transport characteristics of the REEs according to the separation and removal of major minerals were evaluated using sieving and leaching process. The main minerals of bottom ash were identified as anhydrite, magnetite, and quartz, and this was confirmed as a 30% of REE content of the world's average coal ash REE value (404 ppm) as a result of the difference in the combustion characteristics of power plants (REE contents in starting material: 123 ppm). More than 90% of the REEs contained in the bottom ash were found to move mainly with magnetite, and less than 10% of the components were found to move with the quartz. Therefore, In order to recover rare earth elements from coal bottom ashes generated from CFBC boiler, it is necessary to select the main rare elements such as magnetite and develop a pretreatment and concentration process.
Nano-sized $Y_2O_3$ powders were prepared via a sol-gel method starting with $Y(NO_3)_3{\cdot}6H_2O$ (Yttrium(III) nitrate hexahydrate) and water with ethanol as a cosolvent. $Y_2O_3$ is an important rare earth oxide and has been considered for use in nuclear applications, such as ceramic materials, due to its excellent optical and refractory characteristics. It has been used as a chemically stable substrate, a crucible material for melting reactive metals, and a nozzle material for jet casting molten rare earth-iron magnetic alloys. Oxalic acid ($C_2H_2O_4$) has been adopted as a chelating agent in order to control the rate of hydrolysis and polycondensation, and ammonia was added in order to adjust the base condition. The synthesized $Y_2O_3$ powder was characterized using TG/DTA, XRD, FE-SEM, BET and Impedance Analyzer analyses. The powder changed its properties in accordance with the pH conditions of the catalyst. As the pH increases according to the FE-SEM, the grain grew and it showed that the pore size decreased while confirming the effect of the grain size. The nano-material $Y_2O_3$ powders demonstrated that the surface area was improved with the addition of oxalic acid with ammonium hydroxide.

Crystallographic, electric, magnetic and heat transition properties of $\alpha$-Fe$_2$O$_3$ have been studied with a small addition of Eu impurities. Hematite($\alpha$-Fe$_2$O$_3$) is a basic ferromagnetic material having rhombohedral structure, which is similar to perovskites structure. Eu is a rare earth element that has an electric configuration of 4f$^{7}$ 6s$^2$. X-ray diffraction pattern of Fe$_{1-x}$ Eu$_{x}$O$_3$ (x = 0.00, 0.04, 0.06) shows an increament of a value when the amount of Eu impurities increased. The VSM data show an increment of magnetization by increasing the amount of Eu impurity. The one with x=0.06 shows the largest increment of magnetic remanence. The magnetic remanence varied from 0.49$\times$10$^{-3}$ emu/g to 0.62$\times$10$^{-3}$ emu/g when Eu impurity is increased by 2 %. Coercivity is decreased as Eu impurity is increased. Resistances is reduced significantly by Eu impurity. There is a clear difference in temperature-dependent resistance depending on the amount of Eu impurities. Especially, there are cusps between 150 K to 175 K. It indicates the change of electronic quantum states inside the atoms by rare earth impurities in rhombohedral structure. Temperature-dependent heat capacity shows that the most effective amount of Eu impurities is 6 %. %.

We successfully developed Al-Si-Transition Metal (TM) -Rare Earth (RE) Powder Metallurgy (P/M) alloy with fine microstructure, which has high strength at high temperature. This material was compacted rapidly solidified powder and directly consolidated by hot extruding or forging. Before consolidating, rapid heating was performed on powder compaction in order to keep the fine microstructure in powder state. We have also investigated the processing conditions of this new alloy by computing simulations and experiments.

The surface sediments from the manganese nodule exploration area of Korea in the Clarion-Clipperton fracture zone were investigated to understand the resource potential of and emplacement mechanism for rare earth elements (REEs). The sediments are categorized into three lithological units (Unit I, II and III from top to bottom), but into two groups (Unit I/II and Unit III) based on the distribution pattern of REEs. The distribution pattern of REEs in Unit I/II is similar to that of Post-Archean Australian Shale (PAAS), but shows a negative Ce anomaly and enrichment in heavy REEs (HREEs). In Unit III, the HREE enrichment and Ce anomaly is much more remarkable than Unit I/II when normalized to PAAS, which are interpreted as resulting from the absorption of REEs from seawater by Fe oxyhydroxides that were transported along the buoyant plume from remotely-located hydrothermal vents. It is supported by the PAAS-normalized REE pattern of Unit III which is similar to those of seawater and East Pacific Rise sediments. Meanwhile, the PAAS-normalized REE pattern of Unit I/II is explained by the 4:1 mixing of terrestrial eolian sediment and Unit III from each, indicating the much smaller contribution of hydrothermal origin material to Unit I/II. The studied sediments have the potentiality of a low-grade and large tonnage REE resource. However, the mining of REE-bearing sediment needs a large size extra collecting, lifting and treatment system to dress and refine low-grade sediments if the sediment is exploited with manganese nodules. It is economically infeasible to develop low-grade REE sediments at this moment in time because the exploitation of REE-bearing sediments with manganese nodules increase the mining cost.
The purpose of this investigation was to study the sulfuric acid digestion of monazite sand, and to prepare rare-earths-thorium containing material from the resulting solution which would be suitable for further preparation of thorium and rare earth elements by ion-exchange. Digestion of crude monazite sand was treated in $95{\%}C$ sulfuric acid for 2.0 hours at 150∼$250^{\circ}C$. The acid to sand weight ratio were 1 : 1.9∼2.8. Optimum condition was 95% sulfuric acid for 2.0 hours at $200{\pm}5^{\circ}C$. Within this conditions monazite sand was decomposed up to 99%.
The effects of C, Si and RE additions on the tendency of chill formation of ductile cast iron obtained from metal mold casting were investigated. In case of metal mold cast, the ductile cast iron with 2.5%Si had pearlitic matrix, and specimens with 2.9%Si had bull's eye type regardless of C contents. As-cast specimen with a large amount of fine graphites could be obtained by adding 0.2% RE. Normalizing process was necessary to remove carbide and form a large amount of spheroidal graphites for the as-cast specimens. Good mechanical properties could be obtained by heat-treatment of as-cast specimens with pearlitic matrix. Normalizing the specimens with RE caused the reduction in mechanical properties.

Employing statistical design of experiments, the difference in doping behaviors of rare-earth ions and their effects on the dielectric property and microstructure of $BaTiO_3$-MgO-$MnO_2$-($Ba_{0.4}Ca_{0.6}$) $SiO_3-Re_2O_3$ (Re = $Y_2O_3$, $Er_2O_3$) system were investigated. Through the statistical analysis we have found that the amount of $Re_2O_3$ are significantly affecting on the dielectric properties. The $Re_2O_3$ improved the dielectric constant, dielectric loss and R*C constant, so the appropriate contents of $Y_2O_3$ and $Er_2O_3$ were 0.8 ~ 1.2 mol% and 0.8 ~ 1.3 mol%, respectively. The MLCC(mutilayer chip capacitor) with $2.0{\times}1.2{\times}1.2mm$ size and 475 nF was also suited for X7R with the above composition. It showed that the dielectric constant and RC constant were 2,839 and 3,675 ${\Omega}F$, respectively in the sintering condition at $1250^{\circ}C$ in $Po_2$$10^{-7}$ Mpa.

Magnesium alloys are alloyed with rare earth elements (Re, Ca, Sr) due to the limited use of magnesium in high-temperature conditions. In this study, the influences of Zr and Zn on the aging behavior of a Mg-Nd-Y alloy were investigated. magnesium alloys containing R.E elements require aging treatments Specifically, Nd, Y and Zr are commonly used for high-temperature magnesium alloys. Various aging treatments were conducted at temperatures of 200, 250 and $300^{\circ}C$ for 0.5, 1, 3, 6, and 10 hours in order to examine the microstructural changes and mechanical properties at a high temperature ($150^{\circ}C$). Hardness and high-temperature ($150^{\circ}C$) tensile tests were carried out under various aging conditions in order to investigate the effects of an aging treatment on the mechanical properties of a Mg-3.05Nd-2.06Y-1.13Zr-0.34Zn alloy. The maximum hardness was 67Hv; this was achieved after aging at $250^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours. The maximum tensile, yield strength and elongation at $150^{\circ}C$ were 237MPa, 145MPa and 13.6%, respectively, at $250^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours. The strengths of the Mg-3.05Nd-2.06Y-1.13Zr-0.34Zn alloy increased as the aging time increased to 3 hours at $250^{\circ}C$ This is attributed to the precipitation of a Nd-rich phase, a Zr-rich phase and $Mg_3Y_2Zn_3$.
