This study was to establish the floristic composition of vascular plants of North gate Underground forest Sochunji in Mt. Baekdu. This study was conducted during the period of 27 June ~ 2 July 2007. Vascular plants of Mt. Baekdu were composed of 56 families, 141 genera, 172 species, 34 varieties and 1 formae, totaling 207 taxa; North gate area was 136 taxa, Underground forest area was 71 taxa, Sochunji area was 63 taxa. Among the investigated vascular plants, Korea endemic plants were 4 species, rare and endangered plants were 11 species, naturalized plants were 2 species. The special plants by floristic region were 71 taxa; V rank species in 9 taxa, 8 taxa as IV rank species, 18 taxa as III rank species, 23 taxa as II rank species, and 13 taxa as I rank species.
A vascular flora survey was conducted in 2020 to identify flora and analyze changes in the numbers of vascular flora species over the past 10 years at Gongju-weir (GW) and Baekje-weir (BW) in the Geumgang River, Republic of Korea. A total of 241 taxa were found in GW and 279 taxa in BW, and 208 taxa (88% of total taxa) were common species. The distribution of invasive species in GW and BW were seven and eight taxa, respectively. Rare plants were not identified in any of the weirs. The Poaceae family dominated in terms of number of species, followed by Asteraceae, Legumes, Cyperaceae, and Polygonaceae. Additionally, Therophytes accounted for a high proportion of Raunkiaer life forms. The numbers of vascular plant species, total taxa, naturalized plants, and invasive species have been increasing over the last 10 years. However, long-term alterations in invasive species before and after the opening of the weirs increased much more significantly in the partially opened BW than in the fully opened GW. These results indicate that the degree of barrier opening does not affect the invasion and establishment of non-native species.
The polyene antibiotics including nystatin, pimaricin, amphotericin and candicidin are a family of most promising antifungal polyketide compounds, typically produced by rare actinomycetes species. The biosynthetic gene clusters for these polyenes have been previously investigated, revealing the presence of highly homologous biosynthetic genes among polyene-producers such as polyketide synthase (PKS) and cytochrome P450 hydroxylase (CYP) genes. Based on amino acid sequence alignment among actinomycetes CYP genes, the highly-conserved regions specific for only polyene CYP genes were identified and chosen for degenerate PCR primers, followed by the PCR-screening with various actinomycetes genomic DNAs. Among tested several polyene non-producing actinomycetes strains, Pseudonorcardia autotrophica strain was selected based on the presence of PCR product with polyene-specific CYP gene primers, and then confirmed to contain a cryptic novel polyene hydroxylase gene in the chromosome. These results suggest that the polyene-specific hydroxylase gene PCR should be an efficient way of screening and isolating potentially-valuable cryptic polyene antibiotic biosynthetic genes from various microorganisms including rare actinomycetes.
Dictyostelids cellular slime molds were isolated from the soils of Gokneung and Anyang streamside in Korea. The fifteen species including two undescrihed species were identified. These were as follows ; Dictyostelium macrocephalurn D. sphaerocephalum, D. aureum var. aureum, D.mucoroides, D. minutum, Polyspondyium pallidum. D. giganteum, P. violaceum. D. purpureum. D.brefeldianum, D. flavidum, D. mucoroides var. storoniferum, D. septentrionalis, D. aureum var. luteolum,D. aureo-stipes var. aureo-stipes. D. macrocephalum was the dominant species. and D. sphaerocephalum. D. aureum var. avreum were relatively common. D. mucoroides var. storoniferum, D. septentrionalis were the undescrihed species in Korea. In the soils of streamside, dominant species was shifted by D. macrosephalum, D. sphaerocephalum. which were rare in the forest soils. The total clones per gram of streamside soils were greater than that of forest soils, whereas the number of species in streamside was smaller than the in forest soils. As a result, the ratio of the number of clones to species was very high in the soils of streamside, Environmental factors of soil pH, water content, organic content, total nitrogen and total phosphorus made a effect differently on the cellular slime molds community. Key words: Cellular slime molds, D. macrocephalum, D. sphaerocephalum, Shift of dominant species, Environmental factors.
A faunal study on the marine decapods of Saemangeum located in the western part of South Korea was performed during the period from August 21, 2003 to October 25, 2003. Forty four species in 17 families were identified through the present investigation, which were represented by 15 species of shrimps in seven families, three species of anomurans in two families, and 26 species of crabs in eight families. Three species of the identified species were new to Korea: Alpheus sp. and Athanas sp. in shrimps, and Asthenognathus sp. in crab. Of the species collected in the present study, Ogyrides orientalis (Stimpson, 1860) in shrimp, and Acmaeopleura balssi Shen, 1932 and Tritodynamia horvathi Nobili, 1905 in crabs are rare species in the western coast of South Korea.

This work was investigated from April, 1988 to October, 2004. The flora of vascular plants of northern region in Gyeonggi-Province were consisted of total 2,030 taxa; 145 families, 656 genera, 1,611 species, 7 subspecies, 320 varieties, 1 subvarieties and 91 formae. Among them, Korean endemic species were composed of 46 families, 85 genera, 84 species, 35 varieties, 1 subvarieties, and 18 formae, total 138 taxa. The rare and endangered plants based on floral region indicated by Ministry of Environment were 416 taxa; V rank species 18 taxa, IV rank species 79 taxa, III rank species 111 taxa, II rank species 80 taxa, I rank species 128 taxa. Also the naturalized plants were 114 species, correspond to 39.7% of among total 287 species appeared in South Korea. the result of PCA, Gwangju mountain chain at northern region of Gyeonggi-Province has rich and diverse vascular plants, and there are many Korean endemic, rare and endangered plants. therefore Gwangju mountain chain must be the core axis in for conserving the plant biodiversity and richness.
In this study, we investigated and analysed the water quality, distribution of the vegetation and the wildlife to seven wetlands in Donghae city. As a result, most of the wetlands was found to be very poor water quality and some specific pollutants from entering the wetland. A total of 234 taxa on vegetation were identified including 207 species, 24 varieties, 3 formaes, 168 genera and 69 families. 2 species were recorded as designated rare plant of Korea Forest Service. The naturalized plants were 27 species. The urbanization rate of naturalization index was 8.4% and 11.6% respectively. The number of benthic macroinvertebrate taxa was 35 species, 26 families, 12 orders, 5 classes and 3 phylums. Rare species were recorded 3 species. Taxa for fishes were 5 family and 5 species. Endangered wildlife was found 1 species. Most wetlands in Donghae city were the relatively small in size, and some wetlands were separately located from forest and river ecosystems. It was limited inflow and outflow of species into a wetland from the outside. However, various vegetation were found at whole wetlands and some special species also inhabited. The wetlands performed the role as a habitat of wild life.

Background: In Korea, Symplocos prunifolia Siebold. & Zucc. is only found on Jeju Island. Conservation of the species is difficult because little is known about its distribution and natural habitat. The lack of research and survey data on the characteristics of native vegetation and distribution of this species means that there is insufficient information to guide the management and conservation of this species and related vegetation. Therefore, this study aims to identify the distribution and vegetation associated with S. prunifolia. Results: As a result of field investigations, it was confirmed that the native S. prunifolia communities were distributed in 4 areas located on the southern side of Mt. Halla and within the evergreen broad-leaved forest zones. Furthermore, these evergreen broad-leaved forest zones are themselves located in the warm temperate zone which are distributed along the valley sides at elevations between 318 and 461 m. S. prunifolia was only found on the south side of Mt. Halla, and mainly on south-facing slopes; however, small communities were found to be growing on northwest-facing slopes. It has been confirmed that S. prunifolia trees are rare but an important constituent species in the evergreen broad-leaved forest of Jeju. The mean importance percentage of S. prunifolia community was 48.84 for Castanopsis sieboldii, 17.79 for Quercus acuta, and 12.12 for Pinus thunbergii; S. prunifolia was the ninth most important species (2.6). Conclusions: S. prunifolia can be found growing along the natural streams of Jeju, where there is little anthropogenic influence and where the streams have caused soil disturbance through natural processes of erosion and deposition of sediments. Currently, the native area of S. prunifolia is about 3300 ㎡, which contains a confirmed population of 180 individual plants. As a result of these low population sizes, it places it in the category of an extremely endangered plant in Korea. In some native sites, the canopy of evergreen broad-leaved forest formed, but the frequency and coverage of species were not high. Negative factors that contributed to the low distribution of this species were factors such as lacking in shade tolerance, low fruiting rates, small native areas, and special habitats as well as requiring adequate stream disturbance. Presently, due to changes in climate, it is unclear whether this species will see an increase in its population and habitat area or whether it will remain as an endangered species within Korea. What is clear, however, is that the preservation of the present native habitats and population is extremely important if the population is to be maintained and expanded. It is also meaningful in terms of the stable conservation of biodiversity in Korea. Therefore, based on the results of this study, it is judged that a systematic evaluation for the preservation and conservation of the habitat and vegetation management method of S. prunifolia should be conducted.

To obtain biological basic data for the conservation strategies establishment of a rare mistletoe species, Loranthus tanakae(Loranthaceae) in Korea, the distribution range, habitat characteristics and an assessment of the conservation status on the natural populations of L. tanakae were investigated. As a result, the natural populations of L. tanakae were distributed in Bakdudaegan from Mt. Chiri to Mt Seorak in Korea penninsula, and 97.8% of surveyed individuals of the mistletoe species were found in Gangwon province. In natural populations, 1,385 individuals of L. tanakae were parasitic on 480 host trees, and distributed in sunshiny ridges of mountains of altitude range of 353 m to 1,250 m. The range of host trees of L. tanakae were composed of 5 families, 6 genera, 9 species, 1 subspecies, and of these, Quercus mongolica was preferred with 81.5% (389 trees among 480 host trees). As a result of assessing the conservation status through IUCN, L. tanakae was evaluated as Vulnerable (VU). It was considered that Mt. Seorak, Mt. Taegi and Mt. Odae population as habitats with the highest density of distribution of natural populations of L. tanakae should be designated as the protected areas. Thus, conservation strategies and related methods of the natural populations of L. tanakae were also discussed for the sustainable conservation.
