  • This study was based on nitrate chemical accidents at home and abroad. Toxic gases due to adverse reactions are generated in the workplace, laboratory, hospital, container damage, and chemical misinjection. Through a case review of possible situations and safety, this study analyzed various cases of accidents, accident status, accident type, cause of the accident, location of the accidents, etc. from 2014 to 2018. The plans for improvement in education and nitrate accidents were reviewed. As a result, 36 nitrate chemical accidents were investigated, including 16 careless worker accidents, eight transportation accidents, and 12 facilities shortages. Nitrate chemical accidents are occurring continuously. Based on this, the range of toxic effects using CARIS was calculated at the worst-case scenario, and the effective response range was measured through the damage impact range. For this purpose, the impact range was predicted based on the strengthening of safety education, emergency action plan and correlation, and the quantified data was identified. In addition, the reliability of the scope of impact was reviewed based on the correlation formula that could facilitate the evacuation of residents, and it was applied to actual accident scenarios of the workplace to present the effects of the accident response and preventive measures.

  • Since there is a large variation in measurements of the thickness of corroded elements, the thickness of corroded elements are considered as imprecise elements. There is also a considerable degree of uncertainty in a visual assessment of thickness loss. The remaining thickness of a severly corroded element may be represented by an imprecise which expresses the range over which there is uncertainty about the thickness. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to propose a new methodology to safety assessment using imprecise reliability into conventional safety assessment frameworks. For this purpose, this study presents a safety assessment model using Imprecise reliability for large civil structures and demonstrates the applicability of the approach to cable-stayed bridge projects.

  • The movement towards sustainable building design can result in unique fire protection challenges and concerns, especially with super tall buildings in relationship to traditional prescriptive code compliance. Different countries haves different code requirements as well as local best practices and may cause conflict with the design features when designing green buildings. These include, but not limited to green roofs, sprinkler water quality and testing, fire department access and areas of refuge with direct or indirect impact by the perspective code compliance. The solutions to these prescriptive code challenges and fire safety concerns can range from simple alternatives to more detailed engineering performance-based design analyses with good solid practice.

  • The computer program is developed to simulate the evacauation time for a building which is made geometrically complex. The program is intended for use both as a search and a design tool to analyze the evacuation safety through a wide range of structure environments. The computer program has a function of importing FDS's result to each individual resident in the building. These attributes include a walking speed reduction by producing visibility reduction for each person on the fire. $A^*$ pathfinding algorithm is adopted to calculate the simulation of escape movement, overtaking, route deviation, and adjustments to individual speeds due to the proximity of crowd members. Finally, a case study for a theater is presented to compared the calculated evacuation time with SIMULEX in detail. This program contribute to a computer program that evaluates the evacuation time of individual occupants as they walk towards, and through the exits especially for building, underground spaces like a subway or tunnel.

  • In this study, we investigate the safety requirements and test methods of a radiofrequency stimulator. The main test items include controls of a minimum output, accommodation range, and output parameters that have been known as the safety requirements in conformity with international standards. As the test criteria for controlling the minimum output, an increase or decrease in a unit of 1 mA or 1 V or less was applied to the output amplitude regulator for both continuous and discontinuous control, and the output at the minimum setting was manipulated to not exceed 2% of the maximum setting. For controlling the output parameters, one of the representative test criteria states that the current limit of 250 mA should be equal to or less than 1,500 Hz. Consequently, when applying the radiofrequency stimulator on the human body, we need to ensure that the safety requirements conform to the international standards.

  • In this study, a series of finite element analysis using LUSAS were performed in order to assess the quantitative effects of repair and retrofit of stringer in steel plate girder railway bridge with fatigue cracks. And cutoff types of end part of upper flange were considered as right-angled type and round-angled type. Also, as a method of repair and retrofit of fatigue cracks in stringer, perforation of stop-hole and installation of bracket were considered. From the analysis result, it was possible to assess the fatigue safety and fatigue life of stringer with fatigue cracks, and to estimate the stress intensity factor range in cut-off part of stringer using J-integral method. Also, according to the method of perforation of stop-hole and installation of bracket, it was possible to calculate the crack propagation life at the cut-off part of stringer.

  • Universal Design involves designing products and spaces so that they can be used by the widest range of people possible. Universal Design evolved from Accessible Design, a design process that addresses the needs of people with disabilities. This paper introduces the universal design concept through analysis of causes of railway accident within the urban railway station. Railway accident analysis was performed by the internal facilities. We analyzed the standard of accident type, accident cause and accident subject such as elevator, escalator, stairs etc.

  • All activities relate to railway traffic involve risk and that these arise from a combination of the nature of operating activities. Proper management system is required to provide the organizational capability to reveal, analyse and address these weaknesses over time and in reasonably practicable ways, which will determine the rate at which risks can be further reduced. This paper presents a systematic risk analysis approach to safety planning and decision making, informed by a range of risk assessment techniques. An railway organization's safety management system is also presented that shows the approaches taken to minimize the external risks, and identify the shared risks and explain how they will be controlled through collaboration with others.

  • The study was conducted to evaluate consumer awareness of the risk elements associated with foods and their information search behavior regarding food safety. The data were collected from 504 adult consumers living in Seoul, Busan, Incheon, Daegu, Daejeon, and Gwangju through a self-administered questionnaire on August, 2006. Frequency analyses, t tests, one-way analysis of variance, and Duncan's multiple range comparison tests were conducted to analyze the responses using SPSS v. 14.0. The levels of recognition of consumers regarding each risk element were generally low. Many respondents answered that they obtained information regarding food safety from TV/radio/newspapers and family/relatives/friends/neighbors. The respondents also indicated that they had strong confidence in the information from family/relatives/friends/neighbors. Additionally, most respondents required information regarding heavy metal contamination, endoctrine disruptors, and avian influenza.

  • Accidents involving portable ranges occurred total 133 cases for the last five years(2008~2012). It accounted for 18.0% of all gas accidents(739 cases). Major causes of accidents are using of excessive hot grill, leaving a butane can near fire and overheating of a butane can during cooking. In this study, it is a desire to investigate the relationship between thermal behavior mechanism depending on characteristics of cooking equipment materials of portable gas ranges. It shows that slope of temperature change curve correlates with difference of heat capacity on thermal behavior characteristics experiment depending on materials of cooking equipment. In conclusion, temperature characteristics appear differently depending on variables such as materials of cooking equipment. Especially, it is necessary to restrict using cooking equipment made of stones, because it is very dangerous that temperature of can is rapidly increasing caused by high heat capacity of stone.
