  • Liquid ramjet combustor is closely connected with complex phenomena due to a series of processes such as intake air, spray, mixing, and combustion. The present numerical experiments were peformed to investigate these flow characteristics for two and three dimensional liquid ramjet combustor. Grid system was made with three domains: intake region where air is supplied and fuel is injected, combustor and nozzle region, and exit atmosphere region. The numerical results showed that two and three dimensional flow patterns in recirculation region of combustor were significantly different each other and spray model was necessary to predict correctly the chemical reaction flow characteristics. Numerically examined for two different location of fuel injector, one is located on the bottom position of curved intake and the other is located on the top position. We found that bottom position of fuel injector is better than top position because fuel influx to the recirculation region which is need to sustain chemical reaction is more than the latter.

  • Ignition test of the fuel-rich propellant coated with ignition support material in the ramjet combustor condition was conducted. Ignition delay and flame holding was measured. Fuel grain consist of HTPB mixed with AP particle 15 wt.%, Al particle 5 wt.%. To cause the short ignition delay, ignition support consist of $NC/BKNO_3$ and composite propellant was coated to the fuel grain. Ethanol blended $H_2O_2$ gas generator control the temperature, pressure, $O_2$ concentration in the oxidizer gas in the air. Gas is supplied with mass flux of $200kg/m^2s$. Through the test ignition support operated well and ignition delay of 0.6 second and the Flame was sustained.

  • The component based propulsion modeling and simulation of an dual ramjet engine using Taylor-Maccoll flow equation and quasi 1-D combustor model. The subsonic and supersonic intake were modeled with Taylor-Maccoll flow having $25^{\circ}$ cone angle, the gas generator which transfers a pre-combustion gas into supersonic combustor was developed using Lumped model, and the determination of the size of nozzle throat of a gas generator was described. A quasi 1-D model was applied to model a supersonic combustor and the variation of temperature and pressure inside combustor were presented. Furthermore, the thrust and specific impulse applying fuel regulation by pressure recovery ratio and equivalence ratio were derived.

  • The generation mechanism of NAR is not yet understood. In the present study, an in-depth analysis of the computational results previously obtained by the authors is conducted to investigate the flow mechanism responsible for NAR. A theoretical analysis has also been performed to understand the gas dynamic features during transition from scramjet to ramjet mode. It is known that there exists a critical value of the fuel equivalence ratio at which the flow states at the inlet of isolator remain unchanged. An increase in the equivalence ratio over the critical value leads to a sudden change in the static pressure and the Mach number at the inlet of the isolator, which is responsible for the generation of NAR.

  • Performance requirement analysis and weight estimation of a reusable launch vehicle with a rocket-based air-breathing engine(RBCC : Rocket Based Combined Cycle) were performed. Performance model for an RBCC engine was developed and integrated with flight trajectory model. The integrated engine-trajectory model was validated by comparing the results with those from previous research reference. Based on the new engine-trajectory model and previous research results, engine performance requirements were derived for an reusable launching vehicle with gross take-off weight of 15 tones. Dependence of the propellant amount requirement on the mode transition Mach number of the engine was also analyzed.

  • During the Cold War, all space developments were focused on the performance only. However economy becomes more important for space development after the Cold War. There is a growing interest in reusable launch vehicle to secure the economic feasibility. In this paper, technology development prospects and direction of reusable launch vehicles and future propulsion systems of various countries are presented.

  • Advanced afterburner used in the most modernized gas turbine has new designing paradigm to cope with reinforced power density. The most distinct change is the designing trend to integrate fuel injectors and flame holder in order to manage higher temperature of inlet air. F414 and F110-GE-132 engine adopted this methodology and installed a variable nozzle utilizing CMC(Ceramic Matric Composite) material and active cooling of nozzle flap with ejector nozzle in order to enhance the life cycle of engine components and an economical aspect. These technological trends can be utilized for an advanced ramjet engine and combined cycle engine like TBCC.

  • In this study, the cooling performance of a C/C composite material structure with metallic cooling tubes fixed by elastic force without chemical bonding was evaluated experimentally using combustion gas in a rocket combustor. The C/C composite chamber was covered by a stainless steel outer shell to maintain its airtightness. Gaseous hydrogen as a fuel and gaseous oxygen as an oxidizer were used for the heating test. The surface of these C/C composites was maintained below 1500 K when the combustion gas temperature was about 2900 K and heat flux to the combustion chamber wall was about 9 $MW/m^2$. No thermal damage was observed on the stainless steel tubes which were in contact with the C/C composite materials. Results of the heating test showed that such a metallic-tube-cooled C/C composite structure is able to control the surface temperature as a cooling structure(also as a heat exchanger), as well as indicating the possibility of reducing the amount of the coolant even if the thermal load to the engine is high. Thus, application of the metallic-tube-cooled C/C composite structure to reusable engines such as a rocket-ramjet combined cycle engine is expected.

  • A Supersonic air intake model was designed for the high performance ramjet and dual-mode scramjet engine to operate at Mach 4 flight condition. The air intake was tested in the blowdown-type wind tunnel of Kyushu University to identify the internal flow characteristics corresponding to the flight parameters such as the back pressure, angle of attack and angle of yaw. Flow visualization was achieved by the Schlieren and oil flow visualization techniques. The intake performance was analyzed quantitatively based on the surface pressure and total Pressure measurements. The experimental results were compared with the computational fluid dynamics results. The present study exhibits the fundamental but rarely found experimental results of the high Mach number supersonic air intake.

  • A supersonic ground test facility to develop Ramjet and SCRamjet(Supersonic Combustion Ramjet) engine should be able to simulate high altitude and high Mach number conditions including air total pressure, oxygen level and specific heat ratio at the combustion chamber entrance. The test facility also should simulate the effect of oblique shock wave caused by the flight vehicle. The test facility developed in this study is supersonic free-jet blowdown type, which consists of high pressure air supply source(maximum pressure=32MPa), air heater(vitiation type), supersonic diffuser, ejector, and test chamber(nozzle exit dimension=200mm$\times$200mm).
