Method for Analysis on Optimization of Averaging Interval of Rainfall Rate Measured by Tipping-Bucket Rain Gauges

  • Rainfall data from three different types of rain gauge system have been collected for the summertime rain event at Mokpo in the Korean peninsula. The rain gauge system considered in this paper is composed of three tipping-bucket rain gauges with 0.1, 0.2, and 0.5 mm measuring resolutions, the Optical Rain Gauge (ORG), and the PARSIVEL (PARticle SIze and VELocity). The PARSIVEL rainfall rate has been considered as the reference for comparison since it gave good resolution and performance on this event. Comparison with the PARSIVEL rainfall rate gives the results that the error and temporal variation of rainfall rate are simultaneously reduced with increasing the averaging interval of rainfall rate or decreasing the size of tipping bucket. This suggests that the estimated rainfall rate must be optimized, differently for the type of tipping-bucket rain gages, by minimizing the averaging interval of rainfall rate under the condition satisfying the given performance of rainfall rate.

모형실험장치를 이용한 불포화토의 강우 침투특성 분석 (Analysis of rainfall infiltration characteristics for unsaturated soils using a column test equipment)

  • This study was conducted to characterize on the relationships of rainfall intensity and infiltration rate of rainfall dependent on unit weight change in the gneissic weathered soil by a column test equipment. In this study, volumetric water content and pore water pressure were measured using TDR sensors and tensiometers at regular time intervals. Rainfall conditions including continuous rainfall and repeated rainfall were selected in order to know the effect of antecedent rainfall. In the condition of rainfall intensity 20mm/h and the unit weights of soil as $1.35g/cm^3$, $1.55g/cm^3$ and $1.61g/cm^3$, average rainfall infiltration rate was $2.814{\times}10^{-3}cm/sec$, $1.969{\times}10^{-3}cm/sec$ and $1.252{\times}10^{-3}cm/sec$ respectively. The higher rainfall intensity and lower unit weight of soil, the faster average infiltration rate. Overflow in the column was happened except rainfall condition of rainfall intensity 20mm and soil unit weight $1.35g/cm^3$. Increasing the soil unit weight, overflowed water was increased and occurrence time was faster.

강우시 단속류 포화교통류율 변화 분석 (Analysis of Saturation Flow Rate on Interrupted Flow During Rainfall)

  • 우리나라는 지리적으로 중위도 온대성 기후대에 해당하며, 초여름부터 초가을까지 집중호우가 발생한다. 집중호우는 도로의 용량 및 서비스 수준에 직접적인 영향을 미치며, 이에 대한 분석의 필요성이 대두되었다. 본 연구는 신호교차로에서의 강우에 따른 포화교통류율 변화를 측정하여 강우가 도로용량에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 이를 위해 영상자료를 구축하였고, 영상의 프레임분석을 시행하여 차두간격을 조사하였으며, 조사된 결과를 바탕으로 포화교통류율을 산정하였다. 분석결과에 따르면 일반적인 기상상황에 비해 강우상황에는 포화차두시간이 증가하는 것을 확인하였으며 시간당 강우량이 증가함에 따라 포화교통류율이 점차 감소하는 것을 통계적으로 검정하였다. 통계적 검정 결과 일정 시간당 강우량 범위 내에서는 포화교통류율의 변화가 크지 않으므로 각 시간당 강우량의 범위에 따라 세 영역으로 분류하였으며 각 영역에 따라 포화교통류율은 약 7%, 17%, 21% 감소하는 것으로 나타났다.

  • Infiltration of rainfall causes railway embankment to be unstable and may result in failure. Basic relationship between the rainfall and stability of railway embankment are defined to analyze the stability of embankment by rainfall. An experimental study for defining of infiltration rate of rainfall into slope is conducted in the lab. The results of Rainfall infiltration show that rainfall infiltration is not equal to infiltration as like reservoir because rate of rainfall infiltration is controlled by slope angle. Based on these results, boundary condition of rainfall is altered and various numerical analysis are performed. The variation of shear strength, the degree of saturation and pore-water pressure for railway slope during rainfall can be predicted and the safety factor of railway slope can be expressed as the function of rainfall amount, namely rainfall index. Therefore, it is judged that this rainfall index can be a good tool for the rail-transport operation control.

  • Rainfall characteristics for designing the optimum millimeter-wave communication systems from two rainfall data set was analyzed. Two rainfall data sets were compared; one-minute rainfall rate data, one-hour synoptic observation data. Each data set has different observation method, sampling frequency. We looked for tendency and quality confluence between two data sets. We showed several results using one-minute rainfall data by millimeter-wave attenuation model. A climatological one-minute rainfall rate data set over Korean Peninsula will be made after data quality control procedure

Proposed One-Minute Rain Rate Conversion Method for Microwave Applications in Korea

  • Microwave and millimeter waves are considered suitable frequency ranges for diverse applications. The prediction of rain attenuation required the 1-min rainfall rate distribution, particularly for data obtained locally from experimental measurement campaigns over a given location. Rainfall rate data acquired from Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) for nine major sites are analyzed to investigate the statistical stability of the cumulative distribution of rainfall rate, as obtained from a 10-year measurement. In this study, we use the following rain rate conversion techniques: Segal, Burgueno et al., Chebil and Rahman, exponential, and proposed global coefficient methods. The performance of the proposed technique is tested against that of the existing rain rate conversion techniques. The nine sites considered for the average 1-min rain rate derivation are Gwangju, Daegu, Daejeon, Busan, Seogwipo, Seoul, Ulsan, Incheon, and Chuncheon. In this paper, we propose a conversion technique for a suitable estimation of the 1-min rainfall rate distribution.

  • The stratiform rain fraction is investigated in the tropical boreal winter Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO) and summer intraseasonal oscillation (ISO) using Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Precipitation Rader data for the 11-yr period from 1998 to 2008. Composite analysis shows that the MJO/ISO produces larger stratiform rain rate than convective rain rate for nearly all phases following the propagating MJO/ISO deep clouds, with the greatest stratiform rainfall amount when the MJO/ISO center is located over the central-eastern Indian Ocean and the western Pacific. The fraction of the intraseasonally filtered stratiform rainfall compared to total rainfall (i.e., convective plus stratiform rainfall) amounts to 53~56%, which is 13~16% larger than the stratiform rain fraction estimated for the same data on seasonal-to-annual time scales by Schumacher and Houze. This indicates that the MJO/ISO exhibits the organized rainfall process which is characterized by the shallow convection/heating at the incipient phase and the subsequent flare-up of strong deep convection, followed by the development of stratiform clouds at the upper troposphere.

안정된 위성방송서비스를 위한 강우강도 예측에 관한 연구 (Studies on Rainfall Rate Forecasting for Reliable Satellite Broadcasting Service)

  • In the satellite system design, the processes from the initial design to launch take about 5 years and the broadcasting satellite lifetime goes over 15 years. Furthermore, global warming phenomenon causes rainfall rate increasing more and more in some regions on the earth. Consequently, at the stage of the satellite link design, we need to consider the future rain attenuation over 20 years. In this paper, we investigated two time-series system models for forecasting to consider the future rainfall rate for the satellite broadcasting service. We found that rainfall rate of the future 30 years is increasing continuously.

Basic relationship between the rainfall and stability of railway embankment is defined to analyze its stability by rainfall. An experimental study for defining of infiltration rate of rainfall into slope is conducted in the lab. And suggested rainfall index is compared with the rail transport operation control which is used in KORAIL. It is judged that this rainfall index can be a good tool for the rail-transport operation control.

한반도의 태풍 동반 강우의 통계적 모형 (Statistical Model for Typhoon-Induced Rainfall around Korean Peninsular)

  • 강풍과 강한 동반 강우로 인한 최근의 태풍 피해 증가로 인하여 태풍의 영향을 예측하고 분석하는 연구의 필요성이 증가하고 있다. 이에 따라 본 연구에서는 태풍에 동반되는 강우에 초점을 맞추어 태풍 동반 강우에 영향을 끼치는 두 가지의 요인을 선택한 후 태풍 이동 경로에 대한 기상관측지점의 상대각도를 이용하여 2가지의 태풍 동반 강우의 통계적 모형을 제안하였다. 또한 본 연구에서 제안한 통계적 모형의 유효성 증명 및 두 모형에의 적용에 대한 결과의 비교를 위하여 2007년에 우리나라에 영향을 끼친 태풍 나리에 의한 동반 강우의 통계적 예측을 수행하였으며, 그 결과 본 논문에서 제안하는 모형을 이용하여 어느 정도 태풍 동반 강우의 예측이 가능할 것으로 판단된다.
