In this study to estimate suitable size of rain tank in Suwon district, monthly rainfall, daily rainfall duration curve and daily rainy days have been analyzed. Annual rainwater consumption and daily average amount of storage with respect to size of rain tank have been calculated by applying continuity equations that take account of daily rainfall, daily consumptive use, storage of rain tank, It has been shown that above 50 mm of rainfall in the ordinance related to reclamation water may be inappropriate regulation if annual amount of rainfall captured, efficiency of utilized rainwater, number of days for utilized rain tank, daily average amount of storage and daily consumptive use have been considered. Thus, it has been shown that suitable size of rain tank should be determined considering reasonable daily consumptive use with respect to district, constructed cost of rain tank and benefit of rain tank constructed.
Climate change of global warming may affect the water circulation in Korea. Rainfall is occurred with complex of multiple climatic indices. Therefore, the rainfall is one of the most significant index due to climate change in the process of water circulation. In this research, multiple time series data of rainfall events were extracted to represent the rainfall characteristics. In addition, the occurrence of rainfall time series analyzed by annual, seasonal and monthly data. Analysis method used change analysis of mean and standard deviation and trend analysis. Also, changes in rainfall characteristics and the relative error was calculated during the last 10 years for comparison with past data. At the results, significant statistical results weren't showed by randomness of rainfall data. However, amount of rainfall generally increased last 10 years, and number of raining days had trend of decrease. In addition, seasonal and monthly changes in the rainfall characteristics can be found to appear differently.
Pollutant load to Yongdam Reservoir considering rainfall effect is estimated using data collected during dry and wet days between Dec 1998 and Oct. 1999. Limit of significant rainfall was assumed to be as 10 mm/day and numbers of days of significant rainfall for each month were counted using 10 years of meteorological data of the study area. Water quality input concentrations were estimated by taking weighted averages of concentrations in dry and wet days in each month. The resulting concentrations were used as inputs for water quality modeling of Yongdam Reservoir. When rainfall effect was included average reservoir concentrations of BOD, TN and TP were increased by 70%, 5% and 27%, respectively Considering the fact that Korea is under the significant influence of monsoon effect during the summer, it should be important to include rainfall effect in estimating pollutant input to receiving waters. This method is expected to increase reliability of annual water quality modeling results by providing realistic input data.
For the reduction of ammonia ($NH_3$) volatilization from the cow manure composting process, a cow manure pile was covered with vinyl (white polyethylene) and the ammonia emissions were evaluated using the dynamic chamber system for 47 days. Nitrogen and phosphorus loss from cow manure pile by rainfall was also measured in this study. In the cow manure pile without covering, the amount of $NH_3$ emission was 0.78 N kg/Mg which accounted for 9.4% of total nitrogen contents in the cow manure. Eighty nine percent of the total $NH_3$ emission during experimental period from the cow manure pile without covering was emitted for the first 21 days. The vinyl covering of cow manure pile reduced 91% of $NH_3$ emission compared to the pile without covering. The amounts of nitrogen and phosphorus loss by rainfall from cow manure pile without covering were 1.27 N kg/Mg and 0.23 P kg/Mg for 47 days, respectively. Results from this study demonstrated that vinyl covering of cow manure pile could reduce $NH_3$ emission and loss of nitrogen and phosphorus by rainfall during composting.
Purpose: There is a growing interest in rainwater runoff reduction effect of green roof, as flooding caused by increasing impervious surface is becoming more and more frequent in urban areas. This study was conducted to prove runoff reduction and runoff delay effect of the retentive green roof and to investigate its influencing factors to the rainfall events that occurred in the summer of 2013. Method: The experiment intended to monitor the runoff quantity of the retentive green roof($140m^2$) and normal roof($100m^2$) in #35 building in Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea for 75 days in 2013. Result: On analysis of 9 rainfall events, it showed that the retentive green roof has 24.8~100% of runoff reduction ratio, 21.2~100% of peak flow reduction ratio, 0.5~3.75 hours of peak delay, and $1.8{\sim}7.2m^3$ of retaining capacity in an area of $140m^2$. It shows different results depending on rainfall and antecedent dry days. The results show that runoff reduction effect is effective when the rainfall is less than 50 mm and antecedent dry day is longer than five days on average. By installing retentive green roofs on buildings, it can help mitigate urban floods and rehabilitate urban water cycle.
The number of possible working days is one of the major factors for estimating the coverage area of a combine harvester. The percentages of possible working days at 24 locations were presented by analyzing the amount of rainfall during the working periods of rice harvesting from the end of September to the end of October for past 20 years. The percentages of possible working days ranged from 75% to 85% in most cases.
Global warming has begun since the industrial revolution and it is getting worse recently. Even though the increase of greenhouse gases such as $CO_2$ is thought to be the main cause for global warming, its impact on global climate has not been revealed clearly in rather quantitative manners. However, researches using General Circulation Models(GCMs) has shown the accumulation of greenhouse gases increases the global mean temperature, which in turn impacts on the global water circulation pattern. This changes in global water circulation pattern result in abnormal and more frequent meteorological events such as severe floods and droughts, generally more severe than the normal ones, which are now common around the world and is referred as a indirect proof of global warming. Korean peninsula also cannot be an exception and have had several extremes recently. The main objective of this research is to analyze the impact of global warming on the change of flood and drought frequency. Based on the assumption that now is a point in a continuously changing climate due to global warming, we analyzed the observed daily rainfall data to find out how the increase of annual rainfall amount affects the distribution of daily rainfall. Obviously, the more the annual rainfall depth, the more frequency of much daily rainfall, and vice versa. However, the analysis of the 17 points data of Keum river basin in Korea shows that especially the number of days of under 10mm or over 50mm daily rainfall depth is highly correlated with the amount of annual rainfall depth, not the number of dry days with their correlation coefficients quite high around 0.8 to 0.9.
This study is aimed to classify rainfall regions in Pakistan. Classification of rainfall regions is essential to understand rainfall patterns in Pakistan. Rainfall patterns have been investigated using a factor and cluster analysis technique by 10-days rainfall parameter. The data used here have been obtained from 32 specific weather stations of PMD (Pakistan Meteorological Department) for the period of January 1980 to December 2006. The results obtained from factor analysis provide three factors and these three factors accounts for 94.60% of the total variance. For a better understanding of rainfall regions, cluster analysis method has been applied. The clustering procedure is based on the Wards method algorithm. Overall, these rainfall regions have been divided into six groups. The boundary of the region is determined by the topology such as Baluchistan plateau, Indus plain, Hindu Kush and Himalaya ranges.
Probable Maximum Precipitation (PMP) is essential in the design of hydraulic structures such as dams, weirs and flood control structures. Up to the present, PMP has been derived from any proper single storm which can have a large error. PMP values should be evaluated from many historic heavy storm events from all over the country. Since this can be done at the spots of storm occurring and the calculated PMP from all spots in the country can be correlated. The objectives of this study are therefore to evaluate PMP from historic heavy storm data from 1972 to 2000 by using meteorological method, then to correlate and to present the results using GIS. The maximized rainfall depths can be calculate from depth of heavy rainfall and dew point temperature, and then can be analyzed for each rainfall duration to obtain spatial rainfall distribution by using GIS. The depth-area-duration relationship of maximized rainfall can be obtained and this helps to develop enveloped curves . The results from this study are a set of contour maps of PMP for each rainfall duration for all over the country and the depth-area-duration relationships for the area of 100 to 50,000 km.$^{2}$ at duration of 1, 2 and 3 days.
Long term monitoring was conducted to investigate a surface runoff of pollution from urban highway. The monitoring data was collected for 18 rainfall events and was used to correlate pollution load to various parameters, such as rainfall intensity, antecedent dry days and total discharge flow. Runoff coefficient and seasonal variation were also evaluated. The mean runoff coefficient of the highway was 0.823(range; $0.4687{\sim}0.9884$), and wash-off ratio for $COD_{Mn}$ and SS loads was 72.6% and 64.3%, respectively. For the initial rainfall event, the runoff EMC of $COD_{Mn}$ was high in summer and the EMC of SS was high in autumn season. However the seasonal variation of T-N and T-P was not significant. The discharged $COD_{Mn}$-EMC was $147.6\;mg/L{\sim}9.0\;mg/L$ on the generated $COD_{Mn}$-EMC of $98.8\;mg/L{\sim}8.9\;mg/L$. While the generated EMC of SS was in $285.7\;mg/L{\sim}20.0\;mg/L$ and its discharged EMC was in $190.4\;mg/L{\sim}8.0\;mg/L$. EMC of pollutants was not directly related to the first flush rainfall intensity and the antecedent dry days. But the correlation was relatively high between EMC and cumulative runoff flow volume. The trend of EMC was reduced with the cumulative runoff flow volume.
