The Impacts of High-speed Railway on Conventional Railway Systems and Its Policy Implication (고속철도의 영향 및 철도수송 합리화 방안)

  • The decline of railway industry been a world-wide phenomenon. Recently, increased attention has therefore of railway systems has considerable impacts on the existing transport systems. Korea is expecting a era of high-speed railway and thus the need for the preexamination of such system emerges. This study is therefore concerned with the impacts on the conventional railway systems of the planned high-speed railway and its policy implication. The results revealed that the high-speed railway is almost exclusive to the conventional railway system emerges. The results revealed that the high-speed railway is almost exclusive to the conventional railway systems. The only impact is to induce some users of the conventional railway services, resulting in some excess track capacity of Kyungbu line. It dose however appear not to have any influence on the level of service for the conventional passenger services and rail freight transport. Consequently, it appears desirable to pay as much attention to the conventional railway systems as to the high-speed railway.

  • Recently, South korea is driving forward the strategy concerning of the logistics center of northeast asia aggressively on the purpose of promoting Busan port & Gwangyang port to the hub-port of northeast asia, In that situation, it is significant that the meaning, construction connecting between south and north railway. Namely, That is the reason why Busan port is satisfied with the combined transport system of not only marine transportation but also railway transportation completely, However, the research and policy is only focused on the connection of north-south railway so far. The ability of Buans railway equipment as the actual role of origin-destination point of TKR(Trans Korean Railway), was not reviewed. Therefore, this research is shown the problem and reality of the railway transport concerning the centralization of Busan port, and the capacity of Busan port railway facility regarding the increase of future container quantity is reviewed and analyzed Moreover, the object, shown the importance of facility expansion such as Gungbu Trans Express between Daegu and Busan and the improvement scheme for railway transportation activation through the analysis of society cost and the logistics cost of the ability of railway facility, is set up.

  • Line capacity of railways is a core criterion to decide maximum trips in accordance with traffic demand and a priority in railway investment to improve transportation capability. Particularly, because two operators will start revenue services in the HSR from mid-2016, the line capacity should be carefully calculated and controlled to avoid conflicts between the maximum number of KTXs, and the number needed to guarantee the effective competition of the operators. Meanwhile, there have been many arguments about calculating the line capacity, because this number is affected by the number of trips by train types, stopping pattern and dwell time in each station, journey time, crossing or passing, safety headway between trains, etc. To deal successfully with these kinds of problems, this study proposes a simulation method to calculate the line capacity that considers train operation according to the operator's service policies.

  • Determining the investment priority of the railway project is essential to keep its object of railway investment. [National railway construction plan] provide 4 major evaluation indicators and their weighting range in determining the investment priority of railway construction. Which are investment efficiency, inter-regional balance of development, network effects, government supporting policy. However this present criteria has inconsistency in determining economical feasibility of the railway transportation when applying the same evaluation indicator, investment efficiency, with the road transportation. The railway transportation is superior to road transportation in terms of transportation capacity and distance, while offering less carbon emissions. In spite of the prominent position of the railway transportation, it can be failed to obtain its proper investment priority when being determined under economical feasibility based. Therefore, this study analyzed the inconsistency under present evaluation criteria and proposed new evaluation method for the investment priority of the railway construction using AHP(analytic hierarchy process), while differentiate from the road construction. This method is optimized for only determining the priority of the railway construction itself under object of railway investment respectively.

  • Recently, while interests on supply of electric vehicles have increased there still are insufficient charging facilities. As a solution to this matter, using electric power grids that constantly retain about 30~50[%] residual power is being considered. Therefore proposed in this paper railway, is a method to establish a charging infrastructure to utilize railway DC power grids. In addition we designed a high-speed DC charging system, and simulated improvements of the charging structure's charging efficiency according to remaining capacity of batteries.

  • Nowadays, with urban railway vehicles, refrigeration has been used for a long time as an air conditioner including a heating apparatus and a ventilator. Regarding saveenergy, there are lots of researches continually on the refrigeration field to reduce the parts' weight, improve the parts' efficiency and make good looking design of air conditioners. Moreover, we are able to see the recent achievement of the researches. As a result, through this research we improve the quality of inner air with the urban railway system and make a domestic HVAC system by technical development of high capacity air conditioner and the principal parts.

  • In this paper, numerically evaluated is the crashworthiness of the new design of the standard Korea Electric Multiple Unit Train(K-EMU)[developed by the Korea Railway Research Institute]. The 4-car consist of K-EMU is analyzed under collision conditions such as normal coupling, heavy shunting, light collision and heavy collision to collide against another stationary one at 5 kph, 10 kph, 25 kph and 32 kph, respectively. Energy absorbing capacity of its draftgear commercially available in the market and to be equipped in K-EMU is evaluated under each collision condition. Analytical results show that draftgear only is not enough to provide necessary energy absorbing capacity. It is therefore concluded that additional energy absorbers like mechanical fuses should be adopted to improve the crashworthiness of K-EMU.

  • Light railway system has many characteristics of better accessibility, frequency service, low construction cost, reduced air pollution and medium capacity public transport etc. Light railway system as a urban transportation system has been glowing worldwide since the late 20th century. More than 300 cities around the world have light railway systems. Many medium-size cities in domestic site is planning the construction of light railway.   • Research and technology development is an ongoing, iterative process that must be both forward looking and flexible enough to address new needs. The railway technical researches are key to making railway operations safer and more secure, reducing delays, reducing costs, raising effective capacity, improving customer satisfaction, improving energy utilization, reducing emissions, and becoming more economically viable. The railway technical research and development projects can be implemented as independent systems, in which case their benefits will be limited, or they can be implemented as integrated systems, in which case the benefits will be compounded. But the overall objectives of railway technical researches are to provide the railway system with technology which includes increasing quality and boosting productivity.
